Hi.

I am helping to clean a friends computer and ran across xlibgfl254.dll and ByteVerify!exploit. AVG anti-virus does not see either, and McAfee does not see either, however your online recommended scan saw the ByteVerify.

Thanks in advance for your help. Log Files are as follows.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Nice of you to want to help a friend, but this is a bit of a mess and may take a while. I am posting a lot of instructions, in no way am I rushing you. Please take the time you need to safely follow the directions.
If you still want to help, start like this:

1) You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html
http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/2003/s1407/38s07/38s07.asp

C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\
C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\VSO\
Uninstall one of those.

2) You are showing an infected Java cache, follow the instructions in this link carefully to clean the cache:
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/virusproblem/howtoclean/cleanjavacache.shtml

3) See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< badly outdated, downlod the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

4) This item: C:\WINDOWS\system32\xpuupdate.exe indicates a possible Smitfraud infection which is mostly hidden if present.
http://www.fileresearchcenter.com/X/XPUUPDATE.EXE-10855.html follow these directions to check for that infections:

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

5) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
Vundo may be present, rename HJT, call it Dwarbit.exe or whatever you wish. The next log after a reboot should show the infection if it is present.

6) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

7) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

8) TeaTimer will block the changes we must make, follow these instruction to turn it off until you are finished:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

9) Defender Pro Private Surf <<< I do not know this program but it may blck the changes we must make now. Please turn it off until you finish.

10) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

11) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\DriveCleaner Free\ <<< delete that folder

C:\WINDOWS\system32\xpuupdate.exe <<< delete that file

xlibgfl254.dll <<< this should be in the same folder and hides from HJT. Delete that file while in that folder.

(If either file gives you trouble, use this tool and instructions)
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb

12) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix and a new HJT log. Please add any comments you think wil help.

Thanks...Phil

Hi,

Got to step 8 in your list and had the computer lock up. Ended up doing a repair install of the operating system. I have enclosed a new copy of HJT and the rapport.txt file.

Thanks for returning your information, #8 is the process of turning TeaTimer off, this should not have caused your problem? As far as I can see the HJT log is clean, but Smitfraudfix did find the infection:
C:\WINDOWS\wincom27.dll FOUND ! Follow these instructions:

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log and let me know how the computer is running.

Thanks

Dwarbit

Thanks for returning your information. Both logs look good, I asked how the computer was running? Let's run one good scan to make sure nothing is hiding.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply. I noticed that xlibgfl254.dll showed up after restarting the computer...and at this time the ActiveX control for kapersky is on an endless cycle of asking to be installed. Any ideas?

Brian, way back in the instructions I posted this:

http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
xlibgfl254.dll <<< this should be in the same folder and hides from HJT. Delete that file while in that folder.

If you said anything about not being able to find it and delete it I do not remember seeing it.
Please make sure hidden files and folders are enabled:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Then use Search Companion to search for that file: xlibgfl254.dll
Start > Search >files and Folders > xlibgfl254.dll
I believe it will be in the C:\Windows\System32\ folder but I am not 100% sure. Once you find it, delete it. If you have trouble with it use this tool and instructions:
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb

Once you have removed that file, then give Kaspersky another try. Please make sure you are using Internet Explorer and NOT another browser. If it still will not download, let me know and we will try another scan.

Thanks

Dwarbit

Thanks...were you able to delete this file: xlibgfl254.dll

KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Tuesday, July 24, 2007 7:30:59 PM
Number of infected objects: 25

Delete all files in red

C:\Documents and Settings\Cindy\Application Data\drvcleaner.exe << delete
C:\Documents and Settings\Cindy\Application Data\sysdoctor.exe << delete

(some may go with one delete, just make sure to kill all of this junk)

C:\Documents and Settings\Cindy\My Documents\My Downloads\ezlyricsfree.exe/WISE0043.BIN <<< delete
C:\Documents and Settings\Cindy\My Documents\My Downloads\ezlyricsfree.exe/WISE0044.BIN <<< delete
C:\Documents and Settings\Cindy\My Documents\My Downloads\ezlyricsfree.exe/WISE0045.BIN <<< delete
C:\Documents and Settings\Cindy\My Documents\My Downloads\ezlyricsfree.exe/WISE0047.BIN <<< delete
C:\Documents and Settings\Cindy\My Documents\My Downloads\ezlyricsfree.exe/WISE0048.BIN <<< delete

C:\Documents and Settings\Cindy\My Documents\My Downloads\ezlyricsfree.exe WiseSFX: <<< delete
C:\Documents and Settings\Cindy\My Documents\My Downloads\ezlyricsfree.exe WiseSFX <<< delete

C:\Documents and Settings\Cindy.CINDY\Desktop\SmitfraudFix\ <<< delete that folder

C:\install158.exe <<< delete

C:\Program Files\Common Files\DriveCleaner Free\ <<< delete folder

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\msimg32.dll <<< delete file (infected IE file)
(this one worries me, the .dll is infection, I hope it does not cause IE to stop working, it appears it is an add on?)
Here is a link to where you can download a clean file if needed: http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msimg32

(MSN Messenger files are infected, you may have to download it again?)
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msimg32.dll <<< delete
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\riched20.dll <<< delete

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\ <<< delete folder

C:\Program Files\Screensavers.com\ <<< delete folder

Once you finish, run Clean Manager
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/
Restart the computer and post a new Kapersky log.

Thanks

Thanks for the help Phil. Below is the new Kaspersky log, it had one infected and one virus. The only thing that I saw in the file is popcaploader.dll and I could not see it in the folder it is supposed to be in.

KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Sunday, July 29, 2007 9:50:58 PM

Number of viruses found: 1
Number of infected objects: 1 <<< those are both the same item.

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.dll Infected: not-a-virus:Downloader.Win32.PopCap.b skipped
Try doing a search, make sure all files and folders are enabled first:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Start > Search > All Files and Folder then copy/paste popcaploader.dll into the search box and allow time, there are a lot of files to search. Navigate to the file and delete it.

To let you know this item is adware and can cause popups, but it is not serious malware.

When finished post a last HJT log and let me know how your computer is running.

Thanks...Phil
