I need help straightening out my computer. I've always kept it clean & I surfed safely. However, my son has currently started up with the myspace craze & now I have problems. I read the "before you post" thread already, and I'm waiting to see what I need to do next. I haven't downloaded either of the HJT yet since the thread said the helper may request one version over the other. TIA...

Is this all you need to see? It's been such a long time since I've had problems with my computer, I feel like I'm back at square one...
Patience, I am working through my lunch to get this information to you, it usually take 3 or 4 days to get a response.

First I need to say I am not seeing a lot in the HJT log. I see this unidentified item:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qkttccsA] C:\WINDOWS\qkttccsA.exe
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=qkttccsA.exe&btnG=Google+Search
Which is probably a trojan, you can check it here if you wish:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

What I need to know is what program is finding these items and exactly what is it finding. I need the locations if possible. If you have a Vundo infection, you will know it. Vundo is a prolific popup maker directing the user to rouge spyware products, which is how they steal money.
If Spybot S&D is reporting this stuff, you need to make sure you are totally updated and immunized, then return to the directions and run Spybot according to those instruction (Safe Mode) and then report anything that can not be removed.

To see if Vundo is hiding, return to HijackThis.exe and rename it, call it mwalker208.exe or whatever you wish. If Vundo is present it will show after a reboot.

For now, let clean what I see and we can go from there.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {25410243-490D-4CEE-AA2F-89021C04F580} - \
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qkttccsA] C:\WINDOWS\qkttccsA.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbar...p=ZJxdm078YYUS
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/14...2/cpbrkpie.cab

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\qkttccsA.exe <<< delete that file

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

7) I'd like a look at your uninstall list like this:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP, Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

Post that uninstall list, a new HJT log and any information I requested, any comments you think will help.

Thanks...Phil

Here's the new HJT file. Also, I do have massive popups that just started over the weekend. I'm up to date on my S&D & immunized. I'm going to do the 'safe mode' method next (never did it like that, so I guess I was using it wrong).

If I understood correctly, I needed to rename the hijack to a new name & create a new log after reboot, which is what I did. Also, the S$D brought up two items, both were fixed. I believe I was downloaded Exterminate from PCPitstop that showed the Tesslar A trojan, but I can't be sure since I've tried lots of fixes over the past few days. However, this version of S&D seems to say I'm clean now? If I went wrong anywhere here, I'm sorry. Once again, thanks...

We may not have a Vundo infection, but I am trying to be sure.
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< return here and point your mouse at HijackThis.exe and right click it, then choose rename. Call it whatever you want except what it is. It will look like this:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\whateveryouwant.exe When that is done restart the computer so the change can go into effect and create then post a new HJT log.

Thanks

That makes more sense, I only renamed the desktop shortcut earlier. Also, I believe it was Exterminate from PCPistop that found the Tesslar A & Vundo earlier. I downloaded it, used it to scan, then uninstalled it. The popups seemed to have stopped since you started helping me.

I downloaded Exterminate again, scanned & removed it again. Here's the results:

Loadetrex A - Downloader

Tesslar A - Trojan

Matcash - Downloader

& 9 tracking cookies

Could you give me a link to that program. Understand, it may be a valid program, but it wants you to purchase it. You just told me Spybot S&D found no tracking cookies and it scans your computer free.
1) Here is information to help you control cookies:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/privacy/config.mspx

2) Here are tutorials to show you how to use "free" Spybot S&D:
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/spybot/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html

3) You HJT log looks find, I see no Vundo infection, in fact I see no malware at all.

4) This is probably the best malware scanner on the marker, follow the direction and we will see if anything is hiding HJT can not see.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here. <<< all I need to see is the Kaspersky report.

Thanks

http://www.pcpitstop.com/store/exterminate.asp

We checked a couple sites, and when I removed the poker softwares, their sites popped up, so they had some of those tracking cookies also. Dunno, but you are right about Exterminate; scan only, buy if you want to fix what you see.

Thanks for the feedback, I also help at the PCPitStop HJT forum and often suggest their free diagnostic scan, but I will not endorse a program the does nothing for you unless you pay for it. Here is a good website for you to check out programs: http://spywarewarrior.com/

I personally suggest only "freeware" programs, about all I can say about that issue. Kaspersky is not free either and I do not suggest it, but I do use it because it is a very good scanner. Post that scan results when you have it, let's see if anything is left.

Thanks

I ran the Kaspersky while I was sleeping, but the computer wouldn't come out of a sleep this morning. It did show some viruses, so I'm going to run it again, but I have to leave to finish up a roof. I changed my power options so the computer won't sleep. I'm also going to turn Windows Defender on while I'm gone. It looks like the free CA Virus I get from ATT DSL isn't cutting it, so I'm going to buy a better virus package, so if you have any recommendations. Anyway, I'll post what I find later in the day. The popups did stop though. Thanks so much. When I get out of this, I'll gladly donate to Spybot for the help. I never have donated, but I've used it off & on for years, and these help forums make it that much more valuable....

No problem, I am guessing you will show System Restore files infected from backups it made while you were. Please do turn Windows Defender back on. Personally I suggest only freeware products, here are three free antivirus programs to consider:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
http://www.free-av.com/
I run AVG on my sisters new Dell. Here is the Google if you want to see how programs rate:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=rate+antivirus+programs&btnG=Google+Search

I'll have suggestions from experts when we finish, but keep in mind, it is about layered protection first and good commonsense surfing and security habits are far more important than the programs you run. Except for the rouge junk that is after money, most do a good job if maintained properly but none can protect you if not.

Thanks
