View Full Version : Corrupt Windows XP or something else?
Mine is a confluence of awful symptoms. I changed the wireless mouse batteries on Saturday, which seemed harmless, but since then: 1) have received 20 AOL spyware popups since Saturday saying that Command Services was detected and blocked; 2) my system began periodically shutting down by itself; 3) I can ONLY restart in "Last Known Good Configuration" mode; 4) on restart, I get a Microsoft window saying that my system has recovered from a serious error -- one error report said problem with a driver and a later one said the error report was corrupt; and 5) system restore will not let me set a restore point.
I have run and fixed what few minor things Spybot found (but not in safe mode, as I cannot reboot into safe mode). I ran eTrust and it found no viruses and no infections.
Am I a dead duck? Many thanks for any reply. Respun

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
I do see an out of date Java program that is going to get you infected sooner or later:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Several similiar posts sent me looking and you may want to see what pete44 has to say in post#4 of this topic:
http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showtopic=144548&pid=1400229&st=0&
You might want to be contacting aohell. The HJT log looks fine, I see this: C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper and if you own the program that is fine, if it's a leftover trial, you should uninstall it.
Thanks
Thank you thank you. I have been feeling crazy about my malady, but I could also see that others were reporting my same problem.
I will do the Java work that you suggest. Years ago, I removed Webroot using Add/Remove programs. How do I safely remove the remnants that linger?
As for Command Services, I will try to unblock it or manually remove the spyware.
Regarding the suggestion from Pete44 that I uncheck "auto restart" on system failure, what will happen at the next crash? If my system doesn't restart by itself, what do I do?
Following the Java updating, I ran a new HijackThis. I can still only reboot using Last Known Good Configuration. I haven't yet unchecked "auto restart" upon system failure, but I will do this too once I get some hints about what will happen on the next crash...

Note: In notepad under Format, uncheck "Word Wrap" Produce all HJT logs like this, single spaced.
single-spaced - (of type or print) not having a blank space between lines.
You seem to have missed the point, the first HJT log had no malware in it. It appears the aol junk installed on your computer is causing this problem. I would call them for instructions as to how to fix what their software is causing.
It may help you to see what this member posted:

Thanks
Sorry to have stumbled. I have now gone into Notepad and unchecked Word Wrap.
I didn't miss the point, just posted a second Hijack file because my computer has become a moving target for me. Thought maybe something new would reveal itself. My bad.
All fingers point to AOL software. I only use the darn thing because of the way it allows me to view mail without having to download it to my computer. I can leave tons of mail on the AOL servers and work from multiple locations as I travel. Is there another (better) email application that has this same feature? Many thanks for all advice.
Forgot. I would still be happy to learn how to remove the Webroot remnants.:red:

post an uninstall list first:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP, Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)
Thanks
Thank you. Here's my Uninstall Log with deletions for shortening purposes noted in brackets. I have remnants of Webroot and also SideStep (both long ago uninstalled).

Thanks for the uninstall list, I wanted to be sure to use uninstall because it does the cleanest removal. So you are aware, all of the stuff I said to skip will be part of Service Pack#3 which will be coming before long. We all have basically the same updates if we keep up with the critical stuff in Windows Updates.
Only think I see is: Viewpoint Media Player see this information, it's part of this junk:
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
You posted a formatted HJT log I can not use, I am using the first one you posted to do this.
I have remnants of Webroot and also SideStep
I do not see SideStep (adware) in the HJT log. What program is telling you it is there?
Removing SpytSweeper:
1) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Webroot Spy Sweeper Engine and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
2) We need to end process on this item:
C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeper.exe
Follow these instructions: How to use the Process Manager
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#HTProcessManager
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WRLogonNTF.dll
O23 - Service: Webroot Spy Sweeper Engine (WebrootSpySweeperService) - Webroot Software, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeper.exe
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
C:\Program Files\Webroot\ <<< delete that folder
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WRLogonNTF.dll <<< delete that file if there
Run Clean Manager
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/
Post a new HJT log for a final look.
Thanks
:red:
I feel like I am a lousy partner in this. But I am really trying to get it right. Can you please let me know whether I can proceed with your final instructions? I stopped myself since, when I got to paragraphs 4 and 5 below, all was not going per your specs. Many thanks. I will complete your instructions once you give me the green light.
1. I used Add/Remove programs to remove Viewpoint Media Player.
2. I could see SideStep icons on my desktop and in my start menu program files. I ran a search on SideStep just now and saw 6 of these folder and shortcut entries and I deleted them to the recycle bin.
3. In Services, Webroot was already set for Stopped. It was also set for Automatic under Startup Type. I changed that setting to Disabled.
4. I attempted to use Process Manager in HijackThis to kill Webroot. But there was no entry in Process Manager for
C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeper.exe.
5. I did a HijackThis scan only. You had specified two entries for fixing. One of these entries showed up in the scan:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WRLogonNTF.dll.
The HijackThis scan did not show:
O23 - Service: Webroot Spy Sweeper Engine (WebrootSpySweeperService) - Webroot Software, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeper.exe
Please let me know whether I should proceed with your directions despite this missing entry. Many thanks.

You are doing fine, learning is not easy as it is the process of raising the level of our conciousness.:bigthumb:
I will only comment where I believe it is needed and by your number:
4: one of the earlier steps probably removed the service, I sometimes do things more than once to be sure. The line 020 is just an old SpySweeper line that is surely not malware but can be removed with HJT if you wish.
Post a new HJT log so I can take a look, let me know about any malware concerns you have at this point.
Thanks...Phil
Phil -- I hope that you have smarter clients today. Just know that I am very appreciative and earnest!
1. Disabling Webroot Service. I restarted my computer after one of the steps. Almost always, I'm still only able to restart using Last Known Good Configuration. When I began to complete your final steps, I figured out that the Webroot disabling change executed previous to the restart had been rolled back, so I did that again.
2. Could not delete file. I got an error message when I tried to delete C:\Windows\System32\WRLogonNTF.dll.
"Cannot delete [file name.] Access is denied. Make sure that the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is ot currently in use."
3. Firewall is now off. On restart, my Windows Live OneCare firewall was off. I cannot change it back to on. I get error messages that the application is not responding: hung app. Coincidence? How to fix?

5. Unused Applications. I think I see references in the HijackThis log to things that I don't use or uninstalled. Is there a fix? I don't use Comcast, which was replaced by Road Runner (broadband connection). I see Symantec but I uninstalled Norton years ago. I am ready to get rid of all AOL spyware and security applications.

I am more than willing to help you through your problems, it is just I have no way of knowing what is being caused by aol and what is not. I will post the link to the other member with the same aol issues again:

I have heard others are having similiar issues. Once you have resolved the aol issues, which are according to the information I am reading, causing all of your problems, if you still have issues with malware, or problems with stuff that should be removed, post to let me know. I will keep your topic open for a few days to give you time to deal with aol.
Thanks...Phil
Dear Phil --
Understood. I will spend some time now uninstalling AOL security suite and spyware. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I will be back with an update once these uninstalls are accomplished. Respun

Dear Phil --
You knew it all along. Yes, AOL is indeed the culprit for all of this past ten days of computer hell. And I can see that there are sufferers all over the Internet with my same symptoms who do not know what to do.
Here is what I did: 1) close AOL; 2) open Add/Remove progams in control panel; 3) click on AOL Uninstaller; 4) once AOL populates the list of installed AOL software, select and click to remove only the AOL security software (not the AOL main application); and 5) reboot after the uninstall completes.
I have no remaining symptoms. I can reboot normally. I do not receive an error message on restart. I can use System Restore. Many thanks.
Are there additional issues or logs that I should post at this time, so that your eyes confirm what I am saying?
Respun

You seemed to have ideas about program you wanted off the computer. Refresh my memory about those and post a new HJT log and I will tell you what I see and we can go from there. Once we have your issues sorted, perhaps Windows Defender (freeware) will provide the spyware security you need.
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Don't download anything until we look over what you have and you read the links from experts I will provide.
Thanks
Ah yes, now I find that I should not have done anything. Yikes. I was so thrilled to be normal that I followed a step by step guide all afternoon, and now have SpyBlaster, Kaspersky AV free 30 day trial, and Comodo firewall (to go with my Spybot S&D and AdAware). I uninstalled Windows Live OneCare. Thinking I was doing good. Maybe not? Possibly you have other equally frustrating customers...
Many thanks. Respun

Thanks for the feedback, SpyBlaster? are you talking about SpywareBlaster? If so here is a good tutorial for using that program:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
To keep it freeware you have to check for updates manually, do so at least once a month.
Windows Live OneCare <<< my knowledge is limited but you should read the instructions carefully. So far the feedback I have been hearing is not all that great. See this: http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/default.htm?mkt=en-us
Antivirus, Firewall, Antispyware <<< if it is supplying these services then you need to understand it will conflict with other programs. You should run one antivirus program and one firewall only. The jury is still out on anti-spyware programs but I believe it will happen that it will be suggested only one realtime program should be run at a time. In a case like that the anti-spyware (which is probably Windows Defender) will not interfere with SpywareBlaster which does not run in realtime, but blocks items according to the data bases from being installed.
Spybot S&D and AdAware <<< Spybot does not run in realtime but the newest version of Ad-aware does. You can view a video here: http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
I personally am sticking with the old version until a lot more is know about how this one performs.
Something for you to think about. I don't know if you pay for One Care but I would say, and you can ask tech support at Microsoft, that Kaspersky and Comodo (both great programs by the way, just not freeware) will need to be uninstalled to run One Care. If Microsoft tells you anything different, I would be suspicious and ask tech support at the other two.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Raksptmp.exe <<< what is this? Is all of this:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Detect Kbd Daemon] SK2000DM.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RF Receiver Daemon] RAKSPOSD.EXE /ShowIcon
Part of this: This is driver for IBM Media Access Pro Keyboard.
It's used for support special keys.
If you know that is what it is ignore my question.

I see nothing that looks like malware in the balance of the HJT log.

Dear Phil --
You are so fantastic. Thank you for staying with me through this almost over (over!) nightmare.
1. Spyware. Yes, I did mean SpywareBlaster and I will note on my calendar to make the manual updates monthly. Thanks for the tutorial.
2. Anti Virus and Firewall. I uninstalled Windows Live OneCare and rebooted before I installed Kaspersky AV and Comodo.
3. WOC Remnants. It looks like I missed pieces of Windows Live OneCare during the uninstall. I used Add/Remove programs for the uninstall. Is there a test or fix for this?
Respun (restored to computer heaven...for now:heart:)

Post a new HJT log so I can see what is left after the uninstall.

Thanks for the HJT log, th only thing I see is WLC is still running from your services:
O23 - Service: Windows Live OneCare (winss) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live\winss.exe (file missing)
Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Windows Live OneCare and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
and you should be good to go:bigthumb: take this information with you:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
