I'm having trouble completely removing some malware from my laptop [Dell Inspiron E1505]. Thanks for any help

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< your Java is BADLY out of date, download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.
This is no doubt a Vundo infection, but it is hiding most of the infection from HJT, please do this so we can see it:
Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
Once it is moved then rename HJT.exe, call it TheJeezus.exe or whatever you wish. Restart and post a new HJT log. I suggest you keep this computer offline until I tell you it is clean, this junk will download more.

Thanks for returning your information, let's proceed like this.
Read and follow the directions carefully and run these program in the exact order I post them. If you should have either program onboard, delete it and download fresh from the links I provide.
1) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.
Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"
Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com
2) Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.
Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Post the Vundofix report, combofix log and a new HJT log.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
4) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\COMMON FILES~1\CROSOF~1.NET\ <<< delete tht folder(PurityScan/OIN adware)
5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
6) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP, Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)
Post the uninstall list and a new HJT log and let me know how the computer is running now.

I haven't seen any popups, but I haven't tried to open IE yet either. I've converted my wife's laptop over to Firefox. Thanks so much for your help. Are there any other steps you recommend taking?

Thanks for returning you information and the feedback, looking at the uninstall list for security issues or malware. It's a great chance for you to look for program you no longer use.
Full Tilt Poker: Unless you bought it, I would uninstall it, the free ones rarely are, you pay with adware.
Java DB 10.2.2.0 <<< I am not sure what this is. I have never see a version like that. You read the Java information, if you do not know it you may want to uninstall it. This is how dangerous it is now:

You may rename HJT if you wish and you may keep ATF-Cleaner and share it with your friend if you wish.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

If you want to run a good free trial to check for hidden junk, use this one with these instruction, delete or quarantine anything it finds and post the scan results if you have questions.

Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
