In my attempt to upgrade from Win 2K to XP - the installation stops and is looking for mmrtkrnl.sys. My understanding from reading web pages is that this is a file that may be infected. This is a Real Player file?
Now...what do I do? If I cancel - It reboots and restarts the install and returns in a loop. I did a browse and found a file - but I then got a crash screen. Then - back to the loop.
I can not start in 2k mode - even though it is offered at boot - it is missing a file. I can not boot in safe mode - I suppose because I am half way thru the XP install?
I am thinking this file mmrtkrnl.sys needs to be fixed at boot.
I am stuck in installation mode.
Please help!

To tell you the truth, you have posted in a malware removal forum. Since you do not appear to have a malware problem, I suggest you try:

I ended up re-istalling win 2k. Then re-installed xp with an express option. I think what was happening was that I chose an option originally to download information about all my componets so that they would be xp compliant. This brought in "mmrkrnl.sys". This was a malware problem I think - because in the attempt to download the latest information for what I believe to be "realplayer" - it thought it needed this file - which turns out to be a parasite. That's my best explaination.
As for the XP install - I gotta say - it's horrible. There are no OUT doors during the install. Its a rock and the hard place.
Thanks again for all your advice!
