12.5 GB unaccounted for

I'm not sure I'm posting this in the right place or not, if this is the wrong place, hopefully someone will point me in the right direction.

My HD is filling up, not alarmingly so, just over time as I've downloaded things and added more programs files etc..it's gotten to the point that I'm looking at trying to clean up some space. While doing this I found I have approx 12.5 GB space used that I cannot acct for on my C drive.

When I click on properties of my C drive it says that I have 69,417,852,928 bytes (64.6504135131836 GB) Used space. But when I click on the properties of every folder and/or file on the C drive it only adds up to 55,806,992,976 bytes (51.9743123799562 GB). Whatever is using up this space is obviously hidden, although I have it set in my "folder views" options in the control panel to "show hidden files and folders". I do not see any signs of malware activity at this time, spybot S&D comes up clean, for some reason I am unable to complete an online virus scan, it always crashes, this time no exception.

Have you resolved these issues yet? If not, I do not know if I can help with the hard drive issues, but let's tackle what I see and see what happens.

1) C:\Program Files\NetMeter\NetMeter.exe <<< are you aware this program is running on your computer?

My first advice would be to uninstall that junk in Add Remove programs.

Make sure you read it until you understand it. All of your ProtocolDefaults (look at the 015 items in the HJT log) have been changed. To my knowledge only malware does this to get easier access to the computer, but I see no evidence of the malware in the HJT log. Have you recently removed malware? and this would probably have been a nasty infection.

3) Click on MyComputer then right click Local Disk (C:), on the General Tab, post how much used space and free space you have in GB's please.

4) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP, Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

If you still need help, supply the information I requested, post any error message you receive "word for word" any symptoms of malware. Post the uninstall list and a new HJT log. Do not expect miracles, I am not sure what is causing this.

Kevin, since you went through this quickly I will have to assume you are comforable around your computer. You see the red flag indicating the restricted Zone problem I pointed out. Look at the other areas and make any adjustments necessary. As soon as we get the Protocol Defaults restored, please run another diagnostic and post the link.

HJT is supposed to fix the ProtocolDefault issue, we will try that first.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

(I want to point out I should not be going through these steps since you said you uninstalled NetMeter? )

3) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall C:\Program Files\NetMeter\

A little explanation here...When I was going over the results at pcpitstop I went to change the restricted sites and the pop up was blank. There was nothing to change it to. Thinking (I know something I shouldn't be doing for myself until we are done) there was a problem with IE, I looked for it in the add/remove programs list (to repair it) and it wasn't listed, so I downloaded it from microsofts website and re-installed it. I mention this because after I did this I did an HJT scan, as posted above, and the only entry left that you wanted fixed was
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [C:\Program Files\NetMeter\NetMeter.exe] C:\Program Files\NetMeter\NetMeter.exe
(I did check that one and "fix selected"


6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:

When you try to start it, chances are it will be best to have it run the next time you boot. It will take an hour or two. Once it has completed, then defrag. I find it is best to defrag in safe mode but that is optional.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Also, I just did an Ad-Aware scan and it found
Win32.Backdoor.Agent (4 registry entries)
Win32.TrojanSpy.Peed (2 registry entries)

I haven't done anything with it yet.

Hard for me to believe Ad-aware can find stuff that Kaspersky can not. You are running a version of Ad-aware I have not run. I suggest you ask questions about Ad-aware here: http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/
