Hi, This is my first posting to this forum. I have developed several problems in the last week with my machine after some internet searching (I must have gone to a site that downloaded a virus). I have Spybot S&D, Ad Aware SE, and antivirus protection through my Roadrunner account. Until now they have done the job for me.
I have repeatedly tried to remove the various problems; WebBuying Assistant, Virtumonde, DriveCleaner2006 among others.
I followed the directions in the "before you post", I think. I completed a Spybot scan and fix in Safe Mode. I ran a HiJackThis and kept the log. I had previously attempted a combofix and a Vundo fix on my own...didn't seem to work. Please help this newbie!
Thanks

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I can say that the symptoms you mention appear to indicate a vundo infection but that is all I can say. If you want me to take a look, then follow the directions above which are also posted at the top of the forum. I need to see at least the HJT log. I can also tell you the hackers are using methods to hide Vundo from HJT. It would help if, after you have HJT installed, you rename the HJT.exe. Call it anything you wish even aubergine.exe. Restart the computer and post the HJT log and we can go from there.

Thanks

Thanks for your reply. I had to leave the house and just got back. I renamed the HJT exe file and performed a new scan. I am also getting WebBuyingAssistant on every use of SpyBot and everytime I go to IE.
Here is the log file. Let me know if you need anything else. I really appreciate your willingness to help me.

Thanks for returning your HJT log. This is probably why:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< Java is BADLY outdated, download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

Let's start like this: Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks

aubergine

Thanks for your reply. I downloaded the ComboFix and ran it. FYI - I believe the problems all began on 7-27. Please don't groan, but do I get the most current Java through a specific website?
Here is the log you requested.

but do I get the most current Java through a specific website?
Your version is very old but you may be able to update via the Java Console. Start > Control Panel > Java Console (little coffee cup) when the Console is open click the Updates tab then update now. The download link is also posted in the link I posted above.

1) Remove (delete) Vundofix from your computer, make sure you delete the C:\VundoFix Backups.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall MyWaySearch or MyWaySearchBar if there.

4) Download the attached zip file and unzip it to your desktop.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\ <<< delete that folder if there

C:\Temp\ <<< delete the contents of that folder

I believe these three files a Vundo leftovers and bad. Use one or more of these free online scanners to be sure they are bad, then delete them if they are. If you can not decide, the post the scan results for me to look.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ifqhtbsq.dllC:\WINDOWS\cslvbceA.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ccyfhnv.dll

Scanners:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running.

Thanks

I have worked hard to do everything on the list. I updated Java. I took care of the other items. When I did the online Kaspersky scan it found numerous problems, but there was not a fix option. I did not remove the three files you suggested - I did not know how to do that. It seems that there are several infections on the computer.
Here is the Kaspersky log followed by the HJT log. Thanks for you patience with this newbie...

You are doing great:bigthumb: keep up the good work just a little longer. You may work at your pace, take the time you need to be safe.

I did not remove the three files you suggested - I did not know how to do that. The Kaspersky scan only finds one of those files bad, we will delete it shortly.

I would probably have used the Kaspersky free online scan during the cleanup but I posted that link only so you could use the free online file scan at the top. Since you ran and posted the complete Kaspersly scan, I will comment on the results.

Number of infected objects: 41

eight items are in the Recovery area having been removed by Spybot. Open Spybot and look for Recovery (red X) Open that section and remove or delete everything in there.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\ C:\Documents and Settings\Melinda Base\Desktop\backups\backup-20070731-201113-957.dll <<< delete That backup file
Open HJT > click Main Menu > click Open Misc Tools > at the top click on Backups > highlite and Delete that item.

13 items are in combofix quarantine, delete the folder in red and any other combofix you have on your computer.
C:\QooBox\Quarantine\ <<< delete that folder

C:\System Volume Information\_restore
The balance are in System Restore which we will clean shortly. All these infected files are safely removed and quarantined and can cause you no harm.

This one we must delete manually, it is still on your computer.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ifqhtbsq.dll <<< Delete that file
Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.Virtumonde.kp
This appears to be the only bad file left, RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore.
Navigate to that file in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ <<< that folder and delete that file (just the file, NOT the folder)

Your HJT log looks great:bigthumb: clean of malware. How is the computer running?

Now let's clean the System restore files System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

Once the computer reboots then run another Kaspersky online scan, this time use these instructions:
Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

If that scan is clean we will get you on your way with some great safety and security information.

Thanks...Phil

Yeah! I think it all worked. I did all that you suggested. I have been online without any popups and the Kaspersky is clean.
Do you have further suggestions to prevent this from happening in the future?
You were a real lifesaver - I appreciate your help so much.

Phil,
I read through the links - many useful bits of advice there! I saved them to a Word doc for future reference. I made a small donation to the Spybot cause - I wish I could do more...I am an educator (translate- work for the greater good, not the greater dollar).
Anyway, thanks for everything. This was the first time I used this service and it really paid off!
