My son was trying to download a video, and was prompted to download this alleged codec to run it. Instead a whole load of malware haas been downloaded and keeps trying to redirect Internet explorer to other sites, presumably to download more. I've disabled the internet conection on his computer so no on-line scan, but here's the hijack this log, any advice would be appreciated:

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi PS,
Smitfraud won't run. I get a message in French " Des Fichiers n'ont pas pu etre crees...." i.e it wasn't able to create the folders.
Norton anti-virus and Spybot don't detect anything when the computer is scanned.

Read the instructions, make sure your antivirus does not block any of the files it must have to run.
Sometimes folks have to turn the antivirus program off during the download because some antivirus programs block process.exe as stated in the instructions I posted.

Thanks, as you can see Smitfraudfix did locate the infection on your computer. Continue to read and follow the directions carefully.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log. Please comment on how the computer is running now.

Looks like Smitfraudfix did the job and I see no "malware" in the HJT log. I would like to run one additional scan to look for hidden junk.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks for returning the scan results, here is that one item:

As you can see it is in the NAV Quarantine folder, I suggest you clean that folder on a regular basis if you quarantine instead of delete.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Delete Smitfraudfix completely from your computer. It does not update and needs a fresh download whenever needed.
