Hi!

Recently I had a serious virus and spyware attack on my computer. I went through installation of new various softwares like avg, spybot, ad-aware 2007, etc. Since then I am finding that my recycle bin is lost. Whenever I delete something, it gets permanently lost before I can review for final deletion. Please advise how I can restore my recycle bin.

Thanks & regards,

Rahul Dev

Hi there.

Not a lot of detail. :p: For instance, what is the operating system, the infection, and how did you clean it up?

Hi!
I went through installation of new various softwares like avg, spybot, ad-aware 2007, etc.
Please enlarge on 'etc' ;)

However, a google search on "restore my recycle bin" brings up a lot of articles. If your OS is XP, this is a good site: Kelly's Korner Troubleshooting Windows XP (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm)

Best regards.

Windows XP? If so, try the following:
Go here:
Registry Edits for Windows XP
"Tweaks and Tips"
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Download and execute the following fix (#64 on the right hand side):
Replace/Repair the Recycle Bin in Windows XP (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/restorerecyclebin.reg)

Unfortunately, my registry editor is disabled. Can you please suggest how to enable it?

Thanks & regards,

It sounds like you have been doing stuff, so we are operating in the dark here.

If your OS is indeed XP, please take a look at Kelly's Korner for XP questions/answers and see if that helps.

Thanks tashi!

You have been of great help. My OS is XP. Since this attack (of virus, etc.) on my computer, it seems I am having fever. I just found that run command from my start panel is also missing. As suggested by you, I tried to look at kelly's korner but was lost in desert. I dont want to take chances by making hits & trials.

To know more what I did, I suggest if you please can read at http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?4,27725,backpage=. (You may also check my posts under the user/author name aredev, if you wish so to know everything in complete detail. Thanks to this forum, I got to know about Spybot.) After that, I do not know how but I got rid of the problems I was facing. But since then a new set of problems have cropped up.

So now I seek your help to restore my recycle bin, enable registry editing & restore run command in windows start panel.

Hope to hear soon from you.

Thanks once again.

Hi aredev.

I see...

Could you please post a link to your topic at that site.

Generally we do not advise people to turn off system restore before a cleanup, as it destroys the last good restore point.

Anyway, please provide the link and we will go from there.

Cheers.

Hi tashi!

You can check at this link: http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?4,100159,100159#msg-100159. Hope this may help you. However, I feel, simply I need to enable my registry so that I can run the exe file that I dowloaded y'day from kelly's korner. (When I run this file, I get message "Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator"). In fact I quoted the links in my previous post only to update you on all what happened.

Anyway, if it helps you to resolve the matter here it is.

Thanks . Have a great day. :)

Hello.

I see you were asked to download HJT and post at a help forum, on June 17, but did not respond to BIG AL 43 until today.

Did you run HJT and remove items?

No. If you have seen my today morning post at avg, I have mentioned there my problem got solved before hitting HJT. I followed the advise based on advise given at http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/re...725,backpage=. (http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/re...725,backpage=.) as i mentioned earlier.

tashi, as I said in my morning post today to you, my problem seems not be that big as it may be appearing to you. It is simply now that I need to re-enable my registry editing which probably requires to reset my security policies to default or else (if default security policy is disabled) then to enable it & use the exe file to restore my recycle bin. Hope you should be able to tell me now how to enable registry editing. And if possible, to restore run command also.

Thanks & regards,

Rahul

aredev:

Is the Registry Editor program still on the system?
C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedt32.exe
If so, what happens when you double click on it?

We shall see what your response is to md usa spybot fan. :)

Hi tashi!

I am bit scared now. After going through all, I am a bit scared. Is it some big problem? I thought I have got ridden of unwanted elements from my computer but you are sounding it still some mess in my PC. (BTW, I am not clear, am I supposed to download this HJT thing before I post, if at all I post or after I have been asked).

I believe it is not a problem of any malaware but I simply need to change some settings in PC & get going. Please relook in the solution what you are thinking about. Pl tell me how to enable my registry editing. After that, I have a tool recommended by you people only that will at least restore my recycle bin.

Looking forward to hear soon from you.

Cheers!!!!! :D:

tashi & md usa spybot fan, are not trying to scare you :) they are just trying to make sure that all is well
It sounds from your description as if some malware has been present and changed settings on your PC.
tashi is asking you to post in the removal room so that a helper can find out if anything is left and if any other changes have been made.
You should download HJT, run it to produce a log,
then start a topic in the removal forum and include the log in your first post.
