View Full Version : Help: Virtumonde
I'm trying to remove spyware from a friend's Dell Dimension E521 running Windows XP Home SP2. It was running at a crawl when I was called, with incessant pop-up ads for Win VirusPro 2006. The Trend Micro security software that came bundled with the Dell (TM PC-Cillin Internet Security 12) had let a lot of spyware through. I installed Spybot S&D and cleaned out all the malware it could find except Virtumonde, which it's having trouble removing.
I'm debugging in safe mode with networking, and it runs at normal speed in that mode, but every time I shut down, restart, and rescan with Spybot S&D, there are more instances of Virtumonde than were left after Spybot had done its best to remove them the last time.
I'm running with System Restore disabled, and the registry is backed up. Here's the HJT log. Help, please.
Thanks.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
I hate to be the bearer of bad new, and you do have a Vundo infection but this is the one that worries me:
O23 - Service: Windows Media Sharing (WMSsvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmsvc.exe

I would like to be wrong, but I fear I am not. Here are free online scans if you wish to scan the file:

I also checked this service: Windows Media Sharing at CastleCops: http://www.castlecops.com/O23.html
Out of concern for your security, I believe I should give you this information so you can take action to protect yourself.
A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.
Thanks
Well, that was a shocker. Thanks for discovering the backdoor trojan.
I checked all the references you listed, and I'd like to clean the computer of all malware now.
Once that's done, my friend will use it judiciously for nonsensitive activities, while I separately figure out how to extract from Dell an original distribution disk, or figure out if I can do a clean install from the recovery partition on the hard drive that Dell used as an excuse not to provide a Windows installation CD with the computer. In the meantime, she's going to change the passwords on her bank accounts.
Thanks again for the heads up.
What steps should I take to get rid of the malware?
Thanks.

Thanks for discovering the backdoor trojan
You are surely welcome, just hope I got the information to you before the hackers could cause any financial damage with the information. Please read and follow all instructions carefully.
1) Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
(wait until you finish to post the report and HJT log.
2) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.
Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"
Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com
Post the Report from SDFix, the report from Vundofix and a new HJT log.
Thanks
I followed all the instructions. It took four or five passes for VundoFix to stop finding more files. BTW, I found only one VundoFix log, despite running it a number of times. Is that expected?
Here are the SDfix, VundoFix, and HJT logs.
The computer is running much faster now . . . something like normal.
Do you see anything suspicious remaining in the logs?
Thanks millions, guys.

Thanks for returning your information, did you see the PM I sent you today? Andy is working as hard as he can towards adding that nasty >> C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmsvc.exe but he has not been able to do it yet. If it is not added by the next time you post I will give you instructions to remove it manually. In the meantime, we still have work to do and I would appreciate it if you would keep this computer offline unless you are troubleshooting until we get it clean.
Remove SDFix from your computer completely. It does not update and we will need to download it again once it is updated if ee need it.
Please read and follow these directions carefully:
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.
Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log
in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Thanks
I'm keeping the infected PC off the net, and using a Mac for the downloads and a keychain drive to move the downloads to the infected PC.
I removed the old SDFix folder and the shortcuts to it, and installed the new SDFix, and ComboFix.
I ran the new SDFix, and it ran to completion and asked me to rboot so it could finish. I'm not sure I responded correctly. I rebooted into safe mode. There was no indication that SDFix ran again. I launched ComboFix, It rebooted automatically on completion, and this time I let it come up in normal mode. Then an SDFix window appeared with the message "finishing" and the log notice. There was no indication that ComboFix ran again.
I ran HJT.
The three reports follow.
Thanks.

you need to update your Java: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\ <<< download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.
Thanks
OK, I followed all the instructions and it looked like everything went smoothly. The kaspersky scanner reported 6 infections. Here's the report.
I'll take care of the Java update and cleanout problem separately.
Thanks.

Number of infected objects: 20
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 12\Quarantine\ <<< all 20 items are safely stored in the TM quarantine. I suggest you delete the contents of the quarantine folder.
