View Full Version : Virtumonde won't go away

Hi,

I've been reading through some posts about Virtumonde and Smitfraud-C., and by some miracle (SDFix), I finally got Smitfraud-C. to go away, but I still can't get Virtumonde to stay deleted after a normal boot of XP. If I delete Virtumonde in Safe Mode with SpyBot 1.4, it will stay deleted if I boot back into Safe Mode, but it still comes back after a normal boot when I re-run SpyBot.

I have all of the XP updates and am using TrendMicro OfficeScan AntiVirus software. I also have Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06r1 and SpyBot SD 1.4. All definition files for each program have been and are still up-to-date.

I should start with a HijackThis log, so here it is:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Please view this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< BADLY outdated, download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

You are still infected, I see PurityScan/Oin adware and remnants of Vundo. I am surprised SDFix did you any good, that tool is for backdoorbots (trojans). This might take a few passes, let's start like this.

1) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP, Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

2) Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log
in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks

Thanks for your reply.

Just wanted to say that I did read "Before you post". I didn't run the online virus scanner, though. Sorry about that. I thought it said "an on-line virus scanner IS the same as using your resident anti-virus program", but it says "...IS NOT the same...". I think I did everything else it said, though.

Anyway, I took the following steps after I read your reply.

- I uninstalled the old Java Runtime Environment and installed JRE 6u2.
- Ran HijackThis and saved the list from Uninstall Manager.
- Ran ComboFix and saved the log.
- Re-ran HijackThis and saved a HijackThis log.

Following will be the logs, starting with uninstall_list.txt after deleting Microsoft stuff, Windows Hotfixes, etc.:

Just wanted to say that I did read "Before you post".No problem at all, you would be so surprised at how many members never see the pinned instructions and the time I save by posted them in each new topic.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and Security issues (like Java), it's a great chance for you to see stuff you either do not know or no longer use.
and I see no problems myself. I will mention I own two Dell, 4550XPPro and 4600XPHome. I just added a gig of ram to the older computer and you should see it fly now.

As you can see, combofix picked up on a lot of junk, let's see what is left in the HJT log.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 12:26:40 PM, on 8/6/2007

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1EF9DFC8-4659-39DD-7A76-3CB6784AF396} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\trqkimy.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FE41BDB6-520C-4F25-819A-4B19272B399C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhhg.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Rbkrykx] "C:\Documents and Settings\Steve Ulrich\My Documents\??pPatch\n?pdb.exe"

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Documents and Settings\Steve Ulrich\My Documents\??pPatch\ <<< delete that folder (may be gone)

C:\Quarantine <<< delete that folder

C:\VundoFix Backups <<< delete that folder

C:\temp\ <<< delete the contents of that folder

I believe these next two are bad, but must be sure, please use this scan: http://www.virustotal.com/
and delete them only if they scan as trojans.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\xxptcbsd.dll

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\tmp.reg

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a new HJT log, let me know how your Dell is running now.

Thanks

mmccully

Okay, I did everything you said. When I scanned those two files on www.virustotal.com, tmp.reg showed nothing, but xxptcbsd.dll showed up as infected by 11 of the 31 programs that scanned it, so I deleted it.

I also copied some text from the scan results page, pasted it into Notepad, and saved it. That text gives the names of the infections found. If you want me to, I can send you a copy of the names of the infections. By now, I suppose VirusTotal has notified TrendMicro, McAfee, Symantec, etc. about the infection.

Here is my most recent HijackThis log:

Thanks Mike, I appreciate the offer but the hackers change the names of the files so often it's hard to keep up with all of them. Here some information for you.
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:

Your HJT log looks clean of malware, I would like to look at the results of one more good scan if possible:
Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

If you do not feel the additional scan is necessary, then finish like this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

One more thing. I noticed a new directory with a weird name:

C:\QooBox

It has a tree of directories under it:

C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C
C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS
C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\A1
C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\X3
C:\QooBox\Quarantine\Registry_Backup

The Registry_Backup folder has nothing in it. In ...\SYSTEM32 and below there appears to be a few quarantined viruses with .VIR extensions.

Thought this might be worth mentioning.

I'll run the Kapersky scan now.

Hi Mike, sUBs, creator of combofix and many other great malware tools, has combofix create those backups for us in the event we need them and in case something happens during running the tool and he needs information he can also retrieve it.
You can leave those for a couple of days if you wish, once you are satisfied the repair was successful, delete them all.

If you want to scan any of the files to assure yourself, use the scanner I provided or here are two more:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus

Eight years ago when I started removing malware and Merijin gave us HJT, we only had to look at the log to see and remove the bad stuff, malware has gottem so complex with the rootkit, rats, bots, etc. that I stand in awe of folks like sUBs who create the tools. Imagine that cleanup without combofix.

Thanks...Phil

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I ran an online scan from the Kaspersky website, and when I saved the log file to floppy, the disk had a bad spot. I had already closed the online scanner, so I had to re-run the scan.

Anyway, when I ran the online scan, it found some infected files. I think everything's okay, though, because the files were under C:\QooBox and C:\SDFix. Do you think it is possible another online scan will come up clean if I delete those directories and everything in them?

By the way, I noticed that C:\SDFix\backups\backups.zip contains a file called ldcore.dll. That's the one SpyBot detected as having Smitfraud-C. before I started posting my Virtumonde problem. However, Kaspersky detected it differently, as "Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Small.dxm". As you said before, the names can change quickly. (Hey, how about this: "The names have been changed to infect the innocent!". Maybe someone already thought of that.)

Also, I checked System Restore, and it looks like I have only one restore point. I had System Restore turned off, and even though I didn't turn it back on, it is turned back on. Maybe when it got turned off / on, the old restore points were deleted. I think I should look this up on microsoft.com.

Finally, here is the log from the Kaspersky online scan:

Here is, I think (I hope, that is) my final Kaspersky log. Before I ran the scan, I copied the contents of files in C:\SDFix and C:\QooBox--and their subdirectories--to a CD-R and then I removed these folders from C:. I also copied most if not all of the logs that were made in the course of this exercise. After that I re-ran Kaspersky on-line scan, and the scan was clean. So was a SpyBot 1.4 scan and an Ad-Aware scan.

The Kaspersky log contains some "skipped" files. My reading on these is that they're in use by Windows and can't be opened. Since no viruses are detected in memory I'll assume these skipped files aren't a problem.

I'm pretty sure this system is clean now. If you think so, too, then I think we can close this case.

Thanks again and again for your help. I would also like to make some donations for the help I got, and I know where to make them.

Finally, here's my latest Kaspersky log:

KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Monday, August 06, 2007 8:01:58 PM
Number of infected objects: 11 / 0

C:\QooBox\Quarantine\ (2)

C:\SDFix\backups\ (9)

These are off the computer and can not get back unless you manually restored them. I would remove all tools we used and backups, quarantines.
That will give you a clean scan. I notice at least one item was an email worm, very likely someone opened an infected eCard.

Oops...did not notice your last Kaspersky as clean, going ahead and sharing the information with you anyway.

Safe surfing...Phil:bigthumb:
