I am getting occasional spyware removal pop-ups (errorsafe.com and the like), and system is sluggish at times.

Have carried out a virus-scan using an on-line scanner which yielded no infections.

NorthLight,

Wecome to Safer Networking, your log appears fine, but lets do a little digging.

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe)
to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

NorthLight,

ErrorSafe is part of the Smitfraud family of trojans and it is not showing up on your log.

Lets dig a little deeper, you have AVG Anti Spyware installed, open the program, check for updates, boot to Safemode, run a full system scan and make sure to save the report for me to see, this will have tell tale signs of Smitfraud if its present. Here are some instructions.

Open AVG Anti Spyware
On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on How to Act and then select Quarantine <-- Dont forget this
Under Reports
Select Automatically generate report after every scan
Un-Select Only if threats were found
Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <-- Do not run the scan yet.

Boot your computer into Safemode

Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
This will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html)

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:

Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
Next select the Reports icon at the top.
Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system <-- Dont forget this
make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Did the scan as instructed, but whilst in Safe Mode things went a bit pear-shaped.
It was NOT possible to save a report, the program advised me there was no report, even though I had specified to save a log after each scan.
Quarantining the infections simply deleted them.
Sorry

You can open AVG and on the main screen click on Reports, it may be in there, if so paste it into this thread.

Run the free online scanner from Panda.

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm) and perform a full system scan.

Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
Enter your Country
Enter your State/Province
Enter your e-mail address and click send
Select either Home User or Company
Click the big Scan Now button
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
If you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
Save the log someplace you can find
Reboot
Post the Panda scan results in your next reply along with a new HJT log

Good Morning,

The scans are not picking up anything bad. Are you still getting the alert from ErrorSafe ???

Do this for me please

Please download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html)

If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
Then to Updates Search for Updates
If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
Let it scan your system
Then to Fix Problems and fix everything in Red
Reboot your computer.

Make sure your in the Advanced Mode and click on Tools> View Report and just check " Include Results of Last Check in Report" Copy and Paste the report into this thread

Open Hijackthis

Then open the Misc Tools section
click on Generate a Startup List Log,
Don't check the 2 boxes just yet.
Post the log into this thread

Open Hijackthis
Go to Misc Tools> Open Uninstall Manager.
Click on Save List.
The list will open in Notepad.
Copy and Paste the List into this thread

Are you still getting the alert from ErrorSafe ???

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)

Look for these files , they could be in C:\, C:\windows or C:\windows\system32 , right click on them and go to Properties and there should be some info on what company owns the file, let me know that and also what folder there located in.

unins000.exe
Update.exe

Please download SuperAntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfi...ANTISPYWAREFREE)
Install the program

Run SuperAntiSpyware and click: Check for updates
Once the update is finished, on the main screen, click: Scan your computer
Check: Perform Complete Scan
Click Next to start the scan.

Superantispyware scans the computer, and when finished, lists all the infections found.
Make sure everything found has a check next to it, and press: Next
Then, click Finish

It is possible that the program asks to reboot in order to delete some files.

Obtain the SuperAntiSpyware log as follows:
Click: Preferences
Click the Statistics/Logs tab
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SuperAntiSpyware Scan Log
It opens in your default text editor (such as Notepad)

Please provide the SuperAntiSpyware log in your reply, as well as a new HijackThis log.

Just a sidenote, AVG will let you save a report, you just didn't follow the instructions, if I saw that report it would have given me valuable info and tell tale signs of what the problem is.

I have about 112 update.exe files, the majority related to Microsoft updates.

There are 6 unins000.exe files, for Advanced Tetric, Registry Mechanic, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spywareblaster, WinSCP3 and Abpmon 2.0.

I shall post the results of the tests later today.

I have so far this week not been plagued by the spyware pop-ups, but continue to have performance problems on the PC.

Northlight,

Lets see what Super Anti Spyware comes up with, if nothing than I can direct you to some windows support sites that deal with performance problems.

Ken :)

Strangely enough, my scheduled Zone Alarm spyware scan came up with a result just now: win32.Trojan.Shutdown, located in my directory c:\Documents and Settings\admin\Desktop\Security\Smitfraudfix-2\restart.exe. I should point out that I downloaded this file only a few days ago, after my episodes with errorscan.com (see http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=109851&postcount=2).

SuperAntispyware is taking its time, scan running.

Northlight,

C:\Documents and Settings\admin\Desktop\Security\Smitfraudfix-2\restart.exe.<-- This is nothing to worry about , its part of the Smitfraud fix, just delete the Smitfraud program as there are newer versions coming out all the time.

SAS found just cookies so I think your good to go :bigthumb:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button)
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Win Patrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html) This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.

IE-Spyad (http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?showtopic=6640)
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 2.0 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Zone Alarm (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7228,00.asp) Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
