View Full Version : Virtumonde, Dialer virus

My computer has become a victim of Virtumonde and some sort of dialer virus that simply won't go away.

I ran Spybot and "fixed" the identified problems AND ran the VundoFix tool. Although the VundoFix log now shows that I'm clean, Spybot says otherwise.

I ran an HJT scan (WITH the scanner renamed to "HJTscanner") and still show an entry for "pmnll.dll" that VundoFix says it killed. How do I get rid of it?

I think that the dialer is the "winmdk32.dll" entry, but I'm not sure.

I have attached the following logs:
-HJT scan log
-Spybot report (partial)
-Vundofix log (before and after)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

4) C:\Program Files\SpyCatcher\ <<< this program may block changes we must make, please exit it until you finish. Do you own this program?

5) How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmdk32.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {367B222B-4DC3-43CF-9173-57CA962EA6AD} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnll.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmdk32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmdk32.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmdk32.dll <<< delete that file (should be gone, just be sure)

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, and let me know about any malware issues at that point.

Thanks

Thanks for your advice. I believe things are now fixed. I've learned more about viruses and spyware than I ever wanted to know!

1. I always run with all files visible (I'm the only user of this laptop).

2. Downloaded ATF Cleaner. Very compact and useful app.

3. Disabled and re-enabled afterwards.

4. Was running trial version of Express to try and find anything that would help. Now uninstalled. (Spybot is better!)

5. Done.

6. Those were the entries that I thought were the ones to delete based upon other forum posts, but I sure appreciate the confirmation!

7. It was gone.

8. Ran the cleaner.

New HJT log is below. It all looks clean (except for the incomplete uninstall of Spycatcher).

Thanks for your advice and assistance.

Ross

Good Morning Ross, thanks for the great communication, makes it a lot easier to help remotely.

You will probably need to disable Windows Defender, you can try it first without doing it if you wish.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: SpywareBlock Class - {0A87E45F-537A-40B4-B812-E2544C21A09F} - C:\Program Files\SpyCatcher\SCActiveBlock.dll (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://www.shockwave.com/content/bej...loader_v10.cab
(adware)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\SpyCatcher\ <<< delete the folder if there

See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\ <<< check for updates, there should be one. Then uninsall all old versions in Add Remove programs.

That should do if if you have no problems with the instructions.

I would like to run one more good scan to check for anything hidden:
Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

____________________________________________________

If you are running normally, are satisfied with the scans you have run, and do not feel the need for the Kaspersky scan, then do this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

I had already deleted the Spycatcher dll, and zapped the other one that you said was adware.

The Spycatcher folder was NOT there.

I updated Java Runtime SE to the latest version and deleted all the old versions.

The Kapersky scanner required me to disable NAV while it ran. I disabled NAV for an hour, but Kapersky was going to take 5 or 6 hours to run and since I'm in a hotel room in China at the moment, probably with no router firewall (which is how I got into this mess I suspect), I'm not comfortable staying online for hours with NAV disabled. HJT scan shows no processes that were a problem before, but Spybot reports some:

I believe you are in good shape and the Kaspersky would have been a second opinion. If time permits during time when you can not get out, run your resident AV and Windows Defender just to be sure. I would get out of that hotel room and enjoy the counrty if possible.

Thanks...Phil
