View Full Version : Need help - perfc000.dat bad image

I would really appreciate help removing what I think is a virus from my PC.

The following message continually keeps popping up: "The application or DLL C:\windows\system32\perfc000.dat is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

I ran AOL virus and spyware software, spybot S&D, and CA etrust online antivirus software - all with no help. Here's the etrust and Hijackthis logs.

Thanks. Rosemary

Hello Rosemary and welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected and you have a couple of bad programs installed including this junk:
SpywareBot spywarebot.com exploits name "Spybot Search & Destroy"; same app as AdwareAlert [A: 5-14-06 / U: 1-9-07]
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

If you believe that was Spybot S&D you were installing, you are sadly mistaken. This will take a few steps and I strongly suggest you keep this computer offline except when you are troubleshooting until I tell you you are clean.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks...Phil

Phil,
Thanks so much for your help. :)

Yes, I thought I was buying Spybot - how annoying!

I ran combofix and hijackthis. Here are the logs.

Thanks again. Rosemary

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Spybot S&D is totally free and the folks will accept optional donations. Here is the download link and I would appreciate it if you will wait until I am sure you have a clean computer before you download the program:
http://www.safer-networking.org/ some good tutorials:
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/spybot/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html

Do you know what these are? If not remove them with the instructions:
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [frir] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\frir\frirm.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [frir] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\frir\frirm.exe (User 'Default user')

Read and follow all directions carefully and in the posted order.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Progreams and uninstall Optimum Online, SpywareBot if they are there.

4) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to SpywareBot Scanning Engine and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar =

O23 - Service: SpywareBot Scanning Engine (SpywareBotSrv) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBotSrv.srv.exe (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe <<< delete that file

(be very careful you are in the C:Windows\ folder and NOT the System32\ folder where the same file is valid!! )

C:\Program Files\Optimum Online\ <<< delete that folder

C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\ <<< delete that folder

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart your computer and post a new HJT log and let me know how the computer is running.

Thanks...Phil

Phil,
I tried to uninstall SpywareBot twice, but the system won't let me uninstall it. I got a message saying I should check if I have the right privileges. I also tried to run services.msc, but nothing comes up. I wasn't sure if I should continue with the other steps.
Also, Optimum Online is Cablevision's broadband connection software. I'm not sure is I should uninstall it.

Otherwise, the original problem seems better. I'm not getting anymore of those perfc000.dat messages.

Hi and thanks for the feedback, combofix took out the item that was causing the messages. Let's look at these other issues:

C:\Program Files\Optimum Online\Netsurf.exe
http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-2624.html
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Netsurf.exe&btnG=Google+Search
There is the information, you can take that up with your ISP, I darn sure would not allow it on any computer I own.

I tried to uninstall SpywareBot twice, but the system won't let me uninstall it. I got a message saying I should check if I have the right privilegesAre you not the system administrator? This is your computer is it not? Make sure it is disabled in services before you try to uninstall it. You might also try booting into safe mode and deleting the folder there.
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/safemode/

On another note, I was hoping we could run at least one good scan before I send you on your way. If that is possible, then do this:
Delete combofix and the comboxfix quarantine folders, the scan will idenitfy those as infections.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks

Phil,
I tried to delete the SkywareBot folder in safe mode, but strangely could not find the folder. Then I tried to remove the program again and got the same message as before: "Service 'AntiSpyFilter (Anti Spy FIlter) could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop systsem services." I've tried several times to run services.msc, but nothing happens.

I did run on Kaspersky online scan. Here's the report.

Thanks again for your help... Rosemary

Good morning Rosemary...please post the HJT log I requested so I can see the item.

Please assure me this is the case:

Are you not the system administrator? This is your computer is it not?
Please post the message you receive "word for word" and complete.

I've tried several times to run services.msc, but nothing happens. Are you saying to me that when you do this:
Start > Run > and copy/paste this "services.msc" without the quotes in the run command line, then click OK...that nothing happens?

KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Monday, August 13, 2007 6:30:47 AM
Number of infected objects 2
Number of suspicious objects 2

C:\contacts.pif <<< delete that file

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\
Open Spybot S&D and click on the white case with the RED cross. Purge all items in "Recovery"

You must remove the items in Spybot S&D Recovery and delete the file in red then restart so the change goes into effect. Then you can follow these directions which will purge the System Restore files and give you a clean copy. The infected SR file will be gone:

Phil,
This is my home computer - I am the administrator. When I try to run services.msc nothing happens - no window opens.

I deleted the contacts.pif file, purged the items in "Recovery", deleted the old checkpoints and ran HijackThis. Here's my log.

Thanks again for your help. Rosemary

Try accessing Services like this:
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services then use this tutorial:
http://www.jasonn.com/turning_off_unnecessary_services_on_windows_xp/

I am concerned that you may be running more than one antivirus program? You tell me, here is what I see:

O23 - Service: AOL Antivirus Update Service (aolavupd) - AOL LLC - C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\1106655603
\ee\services\safetyCore\ver210_5_2_1\aolavupd

O23 - Service: CA Pest Patrol Realtime Protection Service (ITMRTSVC) - CA, Inc. - C:\Program Files\CA\PPRT\bin\ITMRTSVC.exe

O23 - Service: McAfee McShield (McShield) - McAfee Inc. - C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\ANTIVI~1\mcshield.exe

This item still need to be disabled:
O23 - Service: SpywareBot Scanning Engine (SpywareBotSrv) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBotSrv.srv.exe (file missing)

If you wish to delete the service completely from your computer, please try this:
Delete the Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type (SpywareBotSrv) and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

So you will know, you should be running One antivirus program, one ONLY firewall, and at least one good antispyware program.

I am looking for information to fix the services issue with run command, but you can use the alternative methond until you get it fixed. You may find something here:
http://www.kellys-korner.com/ and look in XP Tweaks.

Thanks

Phil,
I was able access Services through Control Panel and disable SpywareBotSvc and then delete the SpywareBotSvc using Hijackthis. Interestly though, it still shows up on the program list and I went I try to remove it, it still comes up with the message
"Service 'AntiSpyFilter' (Anti Spy Filter) could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services." I tried HijackThis again and this time it said it wasn't in the registry, so it looks like it's gone.

I thought I only had the AOL antivirus software... but they use McAfee. I don't know where the CA product came from. I went in the program list to remove it, but neither the McAfee or CA program are listed.

Here's my latest HijackThis log.

Thanks again for all your help - my computer is running much faster.

Rosemary

Good morning Rosemary,
I don't know where the CA product came from. I went in the program list to remove it, but neither the McAfee or CA program are listed. We are just talking about wasted resources here, not malware, here is a link or two to help explain:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/services.htm
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm#services_disable
http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/services.htm
If you turn off (disable) a service it can always be turned back on if needed.

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 8:02:56 PM, on 8/14/2007

Here is the item in running programs:
C:\Program Files\CA\PPRT\bin\ITMRTSVC.exe
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/itmrtsvc/
It may have some other function beside antivurus?

Good to hear your computer is running better, here is information that might help more:

Let's clean the System Restore files:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

Make sure you remove any tools we downloaded for the cleanup. The exception is ATF-Cleaner, it is nice tool and you can keep it.

Some good information for you:
