Hi,

I'm trying to help a friend get rid of some malware. She's running an old PC with Win98SE and from the report she gave me of what is running via Task Manager she seems to have two problems...or they may be components of the same problem, - insdetect an instantaccess.

Instantaccess I believe is a rogue dialler which is real trouble for her as she uses dial-up access for the internet, - so what I'd like to know is will Spybot S&D deal with these two malwares. This old lady is too far away for me to visit so I'm hoping I can put the solution on a CD, post it to her and then talk her through it on the phone.

Apologies if this is the wrong section of the forum to raise this question.

Thanks for any help.

Hello.

Spybot-S&D does detect instantaccess.

However, as Win98 is no longer supported by Microsoft, the operating system cannot be updated or patched.

There may be a few infections on the machine which could complicate matters.

Regarding insdetect, does she have Tesco Picture Suite installed?

It's nice you are helping your friend, best regards. :)

Hi tashi, - thanks for responding. I'm pretty sure she doesn't have Tesco Picture Suite installed - the only imaging software on the PC is what came with her Fuji camera and a scanner she has.

Do you mean that Spybot will not run on a win98 machine ? I appreciate that MS no longer support Win98 but have the authors of Spybot pulled the plug too ?

I'm trying to persuade her to switch to broadband from a supplier that has a server-side firewall - she uses the 'net enough to justify this.

Hello taidi.

Spybot-S&D does run on Win98. :)

Version 1.4 :Systems Supported (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/paragraphs/spybotsd_ossupport.html)

Uninstalling Previous Spybot-S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/uninstall.html)

Spybot-S&D Version 1.4 Download (http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html)

Tutorial (http://www.spybot.info/en/tutorial/index.html)

Please see this topic: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?p=111003

I suggest guiding her through the installation, make sure she updates the definitions, and then run a scan.

See what is found and go from there.

Best regards.

tashi - many thanks for your help with this; the tutorial with screenshots will be particularly helpful.

After some further Googling and speaking again to her last night there is hope that this may be a false alarm.

I now see that 'instantaccess' is associated with the Textbridge OCR program and she confirms this is on her system as part of the Scanner software suite.

The dialler seems to come up up as 'InstantAccess' on Google with the I and A capitalised so perhaps her PC is not infected after all. I will nevertheless get her to install and run Spybot, - it's an essential tool these days especially for we old 'uns unfamiliar with computers.

I'm almost 70 myself but a little more experienced than most of my age group - I bought my first PC in 1991 - an IBM 386 55SX. 4MB RAM, 60MB HDD and a 14 inch screen  :p:

Best wishes
