Hello good people of this forum,

I seem to be another victim of the Zlob bad guys. The Zlob DNS Changer shows up in my Spybot scans repeatedly, even after I have Spybot "remove" it. Following is my HijackThis scan.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello :)

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure Run fixit is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads, post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

Hi Markka,

This step scares me a little. Can you explain to me what exactly the results of it will be? I am afraid that I will be overwriting some important files. Specifically, what if I have installed a new version of the program in question since the creation of the "bak" folder?

Thanks,

Hello :)

We are moving good files out of bak folders, because those bak folders are bad.

cakes
2007-08-13, 22:06
Will we be overwriting the original file? For example, will C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak\qttask.exe be overwritten with the one in the bak folder?

cakes
2007-08-13, 22:19
Just to clarify - with several of these programs, the version of the file in the bak folder is older than the version in the main folder, because I have installed a new version since (apparently) the bak was created. Will I be overwriting these newer versions by running FindAWF? If so, what should I do?

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Markka,

Well, I guess I'm a little impatient, because before I saw your last reply I decided to run the FindAWF utility #2 on some of the programs you identified. Here are the programs I told FindAWF to look at:

"C:\Program Files\Spamihilator\bak\spamihilator.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Mediafour\bak\MACVNTFY.EXE"
"C:\Program Files\Mediafour\MacDrive\bak\MacDrive.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Mediafour\MacDrive\bak\MDDiskProtect.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\System\bak\EngUtil.exe"

And here is the log the program created after I ran it:

Hello :)

Please also let me know when I can uninstall the AVG spyware program.
You can uninstall it now, because we won't need it ;)

Please Download Dr.Web CureIt (ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe) and save it to your desktop.

Run a scan with Dr.Web CureIt Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, you should now mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.

When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable
After the scan, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot the computer in Normal Mode,
Post the Cure-it report and a fresh HijackThis log

Hi Markka,

I followed your instructions - when you said "Reboot the computer in normal mode", does that mean I was supposed to do the DrWeb scan in safe mode? I did it in normal mode.

Here are my results:

Hello :)

I followed your instructions - when you said "Reboot the computer in normal mode", does that mean I was supposed to do the DrWeb scan in safe mode? I did it in normal mode.
It is not a big thing where you ran DrWeb ;) Normal mode is OK :)
_______________

Go to here:

C:\Documents and Settings\"Your user name"\DoctorWeb\Quarantine

Choose this file: aolsetup.exe

And move it to here:

C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\softwareUpdate\

Kaspersky online scanner works only with Internet Explorer!

Please run an online scanner with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Markka,

I couldn't find this file in Windows Explorer - it doesn't really show the files in the directory, only the "packages" or whatever. I was able to find and delete the file using cmd. I noticed a lot of other hidden files in there.

So since we got rid of Zlob, what are we doing now?

Thanks again for all your help.
