I'm not sure I still have a problem...

Hi! I am pretty careful about what I download and where I go, but I recently installed softphone software from voip.com and shortly afterwards noticed my connection slowing down and other strange things. I uninstalled that software, although I don't know that it is unsafe. I had the CA ETrust EZ Antivirus provided by my ISP installed and running, but I still didn't feel too great about things. Something seemed "off." So, last night I ran my Spybot and got an alert about the firewall being bypassed. I chose to fix it, and here is the report:

After that, I came here and read the sticky and performed the recommended actions. During the run of AVG Anti-spyware, it said I had the dropper.small keystroke logger. Of course, I sort of freaked thinking some maggot somewhere might be getting all my sensitive info, but then I realized it could be a false alarm. I did tell it to quarantine it and did choose to log a report per the instructions here, but I cannot find the log anywhere. Not only that, it shows that there's nothing in quarantine. Evern more creepy, my recycle bin (which I did NOT empty) has been emptied. It's like there is a ghost on here or something. I am the only one who uses this machine. I rebooted in safe mode and ran Spybot again, plus AVG and both came up clean. so did my eTrust Antivirus, as well as an online scan I did. [COLOR="Indigo"]P.S. Hijack this said I had the system32.exe and I "fixed" it. I remember that the dropper.small was in a restore key or something like that in the registry. I am not a computer expert or even tech savvy, so I apologize if I come across a bit naive. its not a good idea to post a e-mail address in a public forum. spam bots. or you can post them like this: xyz at yahoo dot com.

your hjt log looks ok as far as malware goes. cant really offer any explaination for the other happenings. it is possible for any scanner to have a false postive. i wouldnt worry about cookies to much. i would suggest you do aonline scan for another opinion- but you already did that.


I remember that the dropper.small was in a restore key
maybe that was system restore? some malware can get archived in system restore points. we can make new ones if so.

AVG now shows the item in quarantine. The thing that it identified as "dropper.small" was in the c:\system volume information\_restore{...}\RP40\A0000980.exe folder. Please note that I substitued "..." for a long string of letters and numbers between those two brackets. If you need them I can include them. The thing is currently quarantined.

I know I should only have one antivirus running. Currently I have the EZ Anti-Virus and Windows Defender. Which one should I keep?

Also, does that apply to anti-spyware? I use Spybot, AdAware and AVG. Also, I have ETrust Pest Patrol installed also, but I rarely use it. Here is my latest HJT report:

there may be some simple explanation for spybot and the firewall warning, but i cant remember. i will look around and see what i can find.

as long as something is quarantined, it will be harmless, and it does look like its in your system restore archive.

windows defender is a antispyware app. not a antivirus app. both can over lap in what they remove, but you need a seperate antivirus and antispyware app.

so you have 4 including window defenders antispyware apps. pest patrol makes 5.
really two would be good enough. i will spare you my lecture about quanity dosnt equal better security. i would uninstall afew, but its up to you really. alot of antispyware apps now come with real time protection that runs in the background like spybots tea timer or avg "guard" you only want one of these running at a time. they can chew up system resources.

I am assuming that you meant that it does not look like I have the thing in my system restore archive. :-) I did some research myself and did find that I believe I'll keep Spybot S&D running in the backround because I like the daily reports it gives. I'm considering purchasing Kaspersky and using that for my AV program. Today I did their online scan of and it, too, came up clean. I had it specifically check the install file for the softphone I had on here, so that program must have been safe.

I was thinking about the firewall warning from SpyBot S&D, and I was wondering if changing the IE7 security settings could have caused that warning. That is something I did do between boots. I was all paranoid and completely disabled ActiveX (and couldn't do a thing on the 'net!). So, I changed it back, of course.

You are really doing a great and good thing here - helping lugnuts like me with our (frequently self-inflicted) spyware problems. :angel:

i havent had a chance to find out about spybot and the firewall changes, i will see what i can dig up. changing security settings in IE shouldnt have anything to do with your firewall.

you are right, they are for the most part self-inflicited and can be prevented by practicing some things. see my link below for prevention tips.

OMG. I think I am a total idiot. I just checked my firewall, and it wasn't running. I have the stupid little icon for the EZ Antivirus always up, and it pops up when I boot, but that is not the EZ Armor Firewall. I didn't even catch it. I just started the firewall, and it gave me a message bout another private network being connected, and did I want to trust it? The address it gave was 192.168.0.0 (it said it might be a private address), which I believe is my Linksys SPA-2102 for my VOIP. I don't know that much about this sort of stuff, and I am somewhat wary. I also have a cable modem it is connected to. Anyway, I said "yes" I trusted it, figuring that if I've screwed myself then checking "yes" at this point won't make a difference. I also made sure that all my firewall settings were at the default level. It was "turned off" because I did so when doing the virus scan at Kaspersky.

I am very careful about ActiveX components and only allow them from very trusted sites. This computer does not go to porn sites, gaming sites or anything like that. I'm the only one who uses it 98% of the time. Now, I do like to work with DesktopX and get stuff at wincustomize.com. If I download any software it's either from the vendor directly or download.com.

So, am I screwed? Should I reboot and start in safe mode, running another scan with AVG and Spybot?

My computer is running fine, and seems to be a little quicker since I disabled some stuff like iTunes and Quicktime that were starting up at boot. I hate that they keep putting themselves back in the startup menu. Personally, there's something about iTunes that bothers me, but I just can't put my finger on it. I disabled some stuff like iTunes and Quicktime all those annoying apps use up resource cycles. if you dont really use them you can remove them via the add/remove programs panel.

I used to use Limewire (paid version, of course) regularly for music files, until I got religion about it (literally :eek:). So, I bought many CD's for the songs I downloaded so I wouldn't feel so guilty. Now, after reading about rootkits and Sony, I'm more than slightly pissed at The Industry. Now I'm going to dig through a big ol' stack of CD's for any recent ones from Sony Music.

I was mad at iPod to begin with when I replaced my hard drive and didn't back up all my tunes, thinking that they could be easily restored off my iPod - not. I figured my way out of that little snafu, and am going to chuck the iTunes now.

In my former life I was an office manager. Since I seemed to know more than anyone else in the office about computer stuff (scary, but true :fear:) it was my job to oversee the office computers. I can't tell you how many times I had to tell people that comet cursor was a bad thing and to try to get them to educate themselves on common sense security.

Then, I had a teenage son who thought warez, cracks, bit torrent and gaming and hackers were "the bomb." Actually, they were, but not in the way he imagined. He sank all his money from his job into this elaborate monster of a system with multiple monitors, etc. Then, the dweeb got some big bad nasty that crashed his whole system and wound up somehow frying one of his machines. :rotfl: He wouldn't go into to detail, but he was pretty redfaced for a while. Well, I warned him! That's what he got for not listening to his mother...:whistle:

Sony's rootkit on my machine. Do you think I do i think that all hit the fan about two years ago and only involved certain cds. sony did provide a link/help to uninstall it. i avoid anything sony now.

Sony, I'm more than slightly pissed at The Industry. they want to control what you can and cant do with media, not for the artists, but to line there own pockets.

Oh - I dug through my CD's and didn't have any of the "bad" ones, but I did come across my CD of David Gilmour's "On An Island" (2006). That one is copy protected to such an extent that I can't even rip it and play it on my machine. I had forgotten all about that and how annoyed I was. That was my first encounter (probably won't be the last) with copy protected stuff. It's a Sony CD, but it doesn't have any warning anywhere on it about digital rights protection or anything as far as I can tell. It's times like this that I'm rather glad to be older than dirt, because most of the the music I like is old and not adulterated with the crap.

seems you have good musical taste also. that cd, thats the guy from pink floyd? the album: dark side of the moon is one of the classics. i think i have it around here somewhere, along with others, they probably wouldnt sound to good on a record player though.

it might be possible to rip that cd using certain software. if its worth your time or effort i will PM or email you some links if you want.

as far as i know you are correct in that it should be labeled as such.
its really stuff from the last 4-6 years that can be copy protected. we are all criminals right? and are treated like it. like i said before, workarounds come out right behind the new protections! keep on ripping.

log looks ok as far as malware goes. theres really no such thing as being anonymous on the internet. at the least, the proxy service you use knows your ip address and surfing history etc.

I just wanted to check someone's web page out and I didn't want them to know I visited it - otherwise I know that there is no way to really be truly anonymous online. :laugh: That's about all that a proxy server is good for, and some can be a very bad idea, so I've read.

I notice that FindFast keeps resetting itself to start when my system starts. How can I get rid of that resource hog? I really hate it when things like that keep reinstalling/reactivating themselves when I don't want them to. Also, Apple Mobile Device Does the same thing, and since I don't need it I'd like to get rid of that, too.

I have been all over the EFF site. I totally agree with their positions, and I hope a lot of people get involved. I sunk a small fortune into VHS movies back before DVDs, so for Christmas I got a really nice combo DVD/VHS Recorder so I could copy all of my video tapes that I paid for onto DVD and save some space in my cabinets (don't laugh too hard). Well, we all know how that went, don't we? I tell ya, those greedy, silk-suited-cigar-smoking so and so's...:trample:

One thing to mull over: many of these big corporations and the their enablers in the government like the idea of cheap foreign labor to mass produce their products. However, the same countries that provide the cheap labor are the Numero Uno offenders when it comes to piracy and cheap knockoffs. If they are so concerned about protecting their precious rights to their products, maybe they ought smack the big beast that's biting their proverbial hand.

Apple Mobile Device Does the same thing, if you dont use it you could remove it via the add/remove programs panel.

Hi, Shelf,

I tried to remove both FindFast and AppleMobileDevice through the add/remove programs feature, but they don't show up on the list of programs to remove. I also tried it through the Windows system configuration, but they still keep starting up. I will go surf around and figure out how to do it, because I just know I'm not the only one with this annoyance.

you can look under the startup tab in the msconfig utility.
