View Full Version : Smitfraud-C Problem

Hi:
Like many of your other users, I have a Smitfraud-C that Spybot cannot currently put a permanent fix on, as it keeps coming back.

In accordance with your instructions in your POST document, I am including with this thread the results of:

1)the HJT scan and
2)the online Virus Scan. Note: this scan found no viruses having scanned 25557 files. Copying produced a graphic so I am not including this for the benefit of those volunteers who may be using dialup. I also have the results of my Spybot scan should you need this.

Thank you for your help. You are certainly a dedicated group of people.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Hello Robert, You are infected, if what Spybot is finding has to do with the infection, I can not say. Be sure you are totally updated and immunized and once we clean the infection, let me know if Spybot is still showing anything.

These programs may block the tools we will use, turn them off until you are finished:

TeaTimer: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post the C:\rapport.txt

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and you are infected, read and follow the directions carefully.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running now.

Thanks

RobertH

Success! The Smifraud seems to be gone as there was no recurrance when I rebooted. Here are the Rapport.txt file and the HJT Log:

Once I get confirmation from you that everything looks OK I will restore my Spybot settings and AVG Ani-Spyware settings.

OH!....and a donation is definately going to be sent as I think your Program and the support you and you associates give is extremely valuable. Thank you so much for your very fast response and for all of your help.

Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks Phil. I'd be glad to run the Kaspersky but if I choose "My Computer" it presumably will check all of my local harddrives. I havea second D: harddrive currently installed that is almost a duplicate of my C: drive. Kaspersky does a very deep scan and with both these drives it might take forever. Is there a way to run it that would exclude D: or is that not recommended?

Morning Robert, since you have AVG Anti-Spyware onboard, run it instead. (do you own that program?)
Use these instructions:
Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post if you have questions.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

No need to post the results unless you have questions.

Safe surfing and thanks...Phil

Hi again Phil. I ran AVG Anti-Spyware and it found nothing (Note: it never found Smitfraud either when I ran it prior to contacting the Forum).

So I decided to run Kaspersky and the scan results follow. Note: I ran it in Expanded mode so I hope this is ok.

As you will see it found 2 viruses and 5 infected objects. This begs the obvious question: how do I fix?

Hello Robert, understand no matter how good the different scans are they will not find everything. "Smitfraud" is kind of a slang word we use, see the google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=smitfraud&btnG=Google+Search and much of the infection is hard for malware scanners to find because of what the junk is. The operative word is "fraud". Lowlifes try to install junk like this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=7344 and like this:
http://www.theregister.com/2007/05/11/google_malware_map/
http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/05/the_next_net_th.html
and of course many, many other ways. They want you to believe you should send your money and buy rouge junk that is worthless from the work go. It gets worse, at least we know these crooks are after your $$$. Many are after information that can be converted into $$$ at your expense and this is more and more involving organized crime, the Ukraine, Brazil and China but that is certainly not all. If you spend a little time googling for information you will start to wonder if you should ever go online again.

Hope that information helps, let's look at the Kaspersky scan now.

KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Monday, August 13, 2007 7:02:16 PM

Number of infected objects: 5 <<< this is the toal count

C:\Temp\SmitfraudFix\Reboot.exe Infected: not-a-virus:RiskTool.Win32.Reboot.f skipped
C:\Temp\SmitfraudFix.exe/data.rar/SmitfraudFix/Reboot.exe Infected: not-a-virus:RiskTool.Win32.Reboot.f skipped
C:\Temp\SmitfraudFix.exe/data.rar Infected: not-a-virus:RiskTool.Win32.Reboot.f skipped
C:\Temp\SmitfraudFix.exe RarSFX: infected - 2 skipped

Remember before you downloaded Smitfraudfix we told you some AV's might see parts of the fix as malware, Kaspersky was one of those and that is what is being seen.

C:\Temp\ <<< delete the contents of that Temp and any other Smitfraudfix you have on your computer. The program does not update, and would need to be downloaded fresh if you even need it again.

Safe surfing...Phil:bigthumb:
