I know how to use Spybot and have been doing so for 2 or 3 years. I read "Before you post."

I am no having problems with Windows updates. I have Windows set to update automatically plus I've visited the site and manually checked to be sure nothing is overlooked.

I will post another HJT log in another message right after this one.

This is the log you requested. There are NO error messages. I have set my posting (always) for instant email notification. Perhaps the malware interferes with that; I have no idea.

These are the symptoms:
There ARE several Internet Explorer Windows that pop up suddenly when I'm using any Internet Explorer window or even using something in AOL. They are always junk advertising such as credit cards or porn or Macy's credit card offers or offers to help. I believe they are all spyware and are trying to grab passwords and track activity. I am at wit's end now trying to get rid of them. I have used AVG, Spybot, Hijack This, Spyware & Adware Removal. Sometimes they find something wrong and then (at my request) delete or quarantine the bad malware. However, the bad Internet Explorer Windows continue to pop up so the real malware is either not detected or is somehow coming back even after being quarentined or deleted.

Please read and follow the directions carefully.
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks

Thanks. I ran both successfully as far as I can tell (tried to follow directions carefully and not interfere - was scarey!). You asked me to post the logs so I'll post Combofix here first and Hijack this after Combofix in this posting.

Thanks for returning your information and you can see your trojan under "Other Deletions" in the combofix log.

Please follow these instructions:

1) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

2) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: andr - {3162ba5b-4f2d-40c5-8fb6-36c6a0d639e6} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c00DF4A4.dat <<< delete (should be gone)

7) Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the AVG Anti-Spyware scan results, a new HJT log and your comments. How is the computer running?

Thanks

An enormous amount of gratitude :bigthumb:to you (all) for helping me with this frustrating situation. As I recall from the "read this first" area I should explain what has happened as a help to others and to help bring closure to the wonderful people who helped.

1. After I initially entered my post on this site, I found a free telephone number for Microsoft and called. Think that was Sun. afternoon Aug. 18th. The tech had me download software (think AVG was one) and walked me through several different activities. We had to disconnect as the scan was going to take a long time.

2. The help from Microsoft unfortunately did not help and the IE windows w/porn & I believe phishing websites continued to appear. My system was bogging down and several error messages appeared asking me to consent to sending them to MS (I did so.) Even opening something in AOL triggered, as I recall, an AOL Explorer window to open to porn. I was frantically closing all these extra IE windows and they popped up faster than I could close. My system was barely usable.

3. I did not run the programs you last suggested because Microsoft (MS) literally called just before I was going to try it.

4. On Mon. aftn. Microsoft called me back again (still free) and the tech asked permission to take control of my computer. I agreed and he spent some time on it.

I would gladly tell you what he did but it went whizzing by too fast for me. I believe he did something in DOS, though, and I'm quite sure he deleted or quarantined a Trojan or other significant malware. It seemed like he tried it several times before it worked. It also seemed like (and I'm not techie enough to understand this) he was working more through system files rather than anti malware programs.

5. He (MS tech) left me (we disconnected thru phone and he let go of my system) to surf to see if I could trigger the problem again.

The errant bad IE windows did NOT pop up any more. Certainly the system works much better although AOL easily freezes up even now.

I'm assuming the problem is FIXED.

6. I just ran a scan w/AVG and this is what I got:

AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report
---------------------------------------------------------

+ Created at: 10:17:52 PM 8/21/2007

+ Scan result:

Nothing found.

::Report end :)

7. If any of you would like for me to run another scan or program or if there's any information I can provide to help you with your own knowledge base or to help others I will certainly try.

Again, I appreciate your help.

Thanks for the feedback, I suggest you do this now.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Some good information for you:
