Thanks.
armuk,
Welcome to Safer Networking you have a couple of issues going on that we need to deal with.
Lets do this one first as I don't want you go get overwhelmed.
Your computer has been hijacked by the lovely people in the Ukraine, you are infected with Wareout.
85.255.112.0 - 85.255.127.255
Inhoster hosting company
OOO Inhoster, Poltavskij Shliax 24, Kharkiv, 61000, Ukraine
You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.
Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
FixWareout Subratam (http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe)
FixWareout Lonny (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe)
Save it to your desktop and run it.
Click Next, then Install,
Then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.
Save the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt and post it into your next reply.
Now lets check some settings on your system. For (2000/XP) Only)
Go to Start > control panel.
If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections.
Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl.
Left click on properties.
Click the Networking tab.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be available on some systems
Next Go start> Run type cmd and hit OK
Type in ipconfig /flushdns then hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)
Type exit hit enter
Let me see the log from Wareout and a New HJT log please.
Ken
hello ken,
thank you very much for your quick and insightful response.
i followed your instructions up to the part where i have to change the LAN settings. however, when i go into properties for my LAN connection, i cannot see the 'Networking' tab from which to go into the TCP/IP settings.
here is a screenshot illustrating my dilemma:
http://www.imagehosting.com/show.php/1025730_Untitled.jpg.html
edit: please ignore my previous post, i have worked it out now.
i have followed and completed your instructions.
thanks for your time.

Hello Dan,
You did very well, it looks like Wareout is gone :bigthumb: , just need to clean some leftovers.
We need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy as to not interfere with the fix. You can re enable it when we are done if you wish.
Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer
Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Run this system cleaner.
*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!
Download CCleaner from here (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to clean temp files from your computer.
Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 2 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future
You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)
Check this for me please, I just want to see if this file is still present/
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmxjn.exe
Post a new HJT log for a final peek and let me know how your system is behaving now??
Hello Ken,
I have followed and completed your instructions.
I checked for C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmxjn.exe, but it seems to have been removed, as I also received a Spybot TeaTimer alert about a change to dmxjn.exe, which I allowed. Will this be a problem?
Also, what do I have to do to keep Java up to date in the future? Simply let the updating program run?
Finally, if you wouldn’t mind, what applications would recommend as the best to use for: a) Anti-virus, b) Anti-spyware, and c) Firewall? (freeware/proprietary software regardless) I currently use AVG Free Anti-virus, Spybot S&D and Windows Defender, and ZoneAlarm Basic Firewall. I just thought it would be valuable to have an expert opinion such as yours.
Thanks for all your time,
Dan

Hello Dan,
Let me ask you a question and go over a few of your questions.
208.67.216.0 - 208.67.223.255
Freedom Networks LLC
50 Freemont St.
16 Floor
San Francisco, CA
US Is this your provider and do you know about it?????
I checked for C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmxjn.exe, but it seems to have been removed, as I also received a Spybot TeaTimer alert about a change to dmxjn.exe, which I allowed. Will this be a problem? The TeaTimer most likely asked about removing it so I think its ok since its no longer on your log and you the file is not present.
Also, what do I have to do to keep Java up to date in the future? Simply let the updating program run? You can go into the Control Panel and be in Classic View and open the Java Console , it looks like a little cup of coffee. Look for the update tab and you can check the box to automatically check for updates or what I would recommend since you don't need another start up program bogging you down is to check for updates manually , you can do this about once a month or so.
In addition, as for the performance and speed, there hasn't been any noticeable difference or change. You can check out these sites , they offer free tips for speeding up windows. But its a tricky situation, it may be a program or hardware that you installed thats gumming it up.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button)
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
Win Patrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html) This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
IE-Spyad (http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?showtopic=6640)
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
Firefox 2.0 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
Zone Alarm (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7228,00.asp) Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
The rest of your log looks fine :bigthumb: But let me know about your provider, I want to be 100% sure that these are not tied into the Wareout infection.

Hello Ken,
Thanks for all the information and advice.
As for the ISP provider address, I can confirm it is not my provider (I live in Britain) and I have never heard of "Freedom Networks LLC".
OK Dan, thanks for getting back to me with that info. I believe they are part of the Wareout we just cleaned. The thieves that write this garbage are getting more crafty all the time.
I want you to understand how to restore any changes you make with HJT.
To restore the backups:
Open HiJackThis
Click on "View the list of Backups"
Place a check mark next to anything you want to restore
Click Restore
Click Yes
Reboot your computer
Remove these with HJT.

Thanks for the warning about the fraudsters Ken.
I've looked up "Freedom Networks" on Google and find that they have a website, but a very questionable one They have no contact details whatsoever or any information about where they are based, even the phone numbers seem fake. They are indeed getting craftier as you said.
I have removed those entries in HijackThis as well.
