Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

That's right, no tools for this infection runs on this OS that I know of. Here is what microsoft has to say:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/support/endofsupport.mspx
Means if you take this OS online you are going to get infected sooner more often than later. My experience with the OS, and I own a Compaq 7360 with Win98SE on it that runs like a new computer, but I DO NOT go online with it even though I can, and this infection is very limited, I will do my best but can make no promises. I will also say, if you intend to go back online once you are clean, then we will both have wasted out time removing this infection.

1) Please let me see your uninstall list in case the infection is installed:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

2) Use the instrutions in this link for your OS to show all hidden files and folders:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

3) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
If you must run from the Desktop, create a folder like this: C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP\HJT\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINPRB32] rundll32 WINPRB32.DLL,run
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows update loader] C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [Windows update loader] C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe (User 'Default user')

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\XPUPDATE.EXE <<< delete that file

WINPRB32.DLL <<< delete that file(you will need to search for it, probably in the same C:\Windows\ folder??)

4) Clean Manager
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/

Restart the computer and post the uninstall list and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running.

See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_12\ <<< check for an update and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.
I am not sure how far updates from Java go for the OS.

Thanks

Hey pskelley,
I want to start off by saying Thank You for taking time to help me with my old 98 machine. I had hoped to hang on to it till my youngest made it through college, but in light of your comments, that doesn't seem like a smart thing to do.

I followed your instructions through step 4 however, i have not yet deleted the old Java versions, but i will do that as soon as i post this reply. ...

Hi Charlie, thanks for returning your information, I understand the attachment and I understand financial obligations, but it is just not safe, the junk our here gets worse and worse. In no way would I suggest you use this computer for anything that needs to be secure.
I look for malware and security issues in the uninstall list and the out of date Java is all I see. Here is a look at how easy it is to get infected:
http://www.theregister.com/2007/05/11/google_malware_map/
http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/05/the_next_net_th.html
This is likely how it happened to you.

I am still seeing this item: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINPRB32] rundll32 WINPRB32.DLL,run
WINPRB32.DLL <<< I had this file scheduled for deletion? Here is the Google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=+WINPRB32.DLL&btnG=Search
Were you not able to do so?
I am fairly sure it needs to go, you may scan the files with one of these free online scanners:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/
Post the results for me to view.

Thanks

Hey pskelley
Once again, thanks for your help.

I did have a little difficulty deleting the winpbr32.dll file itself yesterday. At first i got a msg. saying that windows was using the file and it could not be deleted etc., so then i rebooted in safe mode and i thought i was able to delete it. All that being said i went back this evening and deleted the O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINPRB32] rundll32 WINPRB32.DLL,run and also searched for the file itself, and it was not found.

One thing i noticed when i looked at the HJT.log was that the name Magicantispy kept appearing. That is not a program i installed, and actually i uninstalled it before i posted to the forum. Is this significant?

Here's the HJT.log

Thanks
charlie

Thanks for returning your information, you asked:

One thing i noticed when i looked at the HJT.log was that the name Magicantispy kept appearing. That is not a program i installed, and actually i uninstalled it before i posted to the forum. Is this significant? The program is a piece of junk, but understand it got installed somehow. Often the junk if bundled with other junk and no one bothers to read the eula agreement. Because it is junk the software is written poorly and the unistaller does not remove it all, and problems can occur.
Here is information at Google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Magicantispy&btnG=Google+Search
If we can't remove it manually, Symantec offers information for editing it from your register (make sure you backup) and several others offer removal help. Be careful because some of those look questionable also, here is a good guide to use:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

1) all files and folders still enabled

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Magicantispy] C:\PROGRAM FILES\MAGICANTISPY\Magicantispy.exe
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [Magicantispy] C:\PROGRAM FILES\MAGICANTISPY\Magicantispy.exe (User 'Default user')

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\MAGICANTISPY\ <<< delete that folder

Make sure you clean the recycle bin.

Let me suppest to you that you download a lot of yahoo games, yahoo is in bed with the enemy and they are not above sending adware and even spyware along with what you think is "free". As with about all free programs, you will pay a price. I suggest the games be purchased (even then read the eula) or played online.

Some good information for you:

Hey pskelley

The saga continues :) I followed the procedure to delete magicantispy, but interestingly enough when i went to delete the folder, it wasn't there. In any event i cleaned out the recycle bin and thought i would run Spybot to see if Virtumonde was there....unfortunately it was

Pasted below is my HJT log after the magicantispy removal. Thanks.....charlie

Looking at your HJT log on this date:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 8:43:04 PM, on 8/21/07

Use HJT to remove this old Java line.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - (no file)

I see nothing in the log I can identify as malware.

In any event i cleaned out the recycle bin and thought i would run Spybot to see if Virtumonde was there....unfortunately it wasIs your Spybot version completely up to date and immunized. That being the case, then post at the Spybot forum to see if it is a false positive.
Before you post, I suggest you run Spybot as suggest in this link:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288 to see if the items can be removed in safe mode.

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4 <<< Spybot forum
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=16 <<< false positives

Thanks

hey pskelley
I believe you have defeated Virtumonde on w/98!!! Running spybot and deleting in the safe mode did the trick last evening

Also, as you suggested, the machine you cleaned is now officially an offline machine so as not to be reinfected

Many, many thanks for sharing your knowledge and time with me.

Charlie
