I have a Sony laptop that previouly ran normal speed on DSL, and now is very slow. At about the same time during Spy-Bot scan, it ran thru OK until it stops at Cool Search. Does anyone have any suggestions, or explanation?

Could you please do this?

Open SpyBot.
Check for problems.
When finished, right click and choose copy results (not the full report) to clipboard and post that into topic.

My scan also goes only to coolwwwsearch and keeps running but does not scan any further ...

I also tried installing and running coolwebsearch smartkiller from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4113.html but that download won't open for me.

Here is the report from Spybot after I checked for problems and had to stop the program:

That's more for if Spybot flashes and disappears, from a cws infection from a few years back. So,you might not want to worry about getting cws smartkiller to open, anyways,I'm not even sure that cws infection is around anymore.

There are a couple things you could try here:
http://www.spybot.info/en/faq/52.html

What os do you have? Are you having any malware type problems?

I am also on XP home. Besides Spybot getting stuck at CWS I am having a problem not able to download flash into one of my user accounts. Works fine in another one and have been led to believe it is due to some type of virus or something preventing it from opening and running but only in that user.

I have tried running Spybot in safemode and also get the same result of sticking at CWS (only gets about a 1/4 of the way through the file scan). I am running a fully updated v 1.4 of Spybot.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks. :) I see in your title, that you say Spybot detects cws, then stops scanning. So,does Spybot say anything when that happens, like give you an error message,or does anything come up in red?Or,does the scan just stop at cws?

I've had my own issues with getting flash player installed, actually. On the account that you can't get flash player working,is it an administrator account,or is it a limited account?
They have a troubleshooting page,here:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_19166&sliceId=1
Any other signs that you might have malware/a virus on your computer?

Did you try clearing temp files?

Do you know if your computer uses Hyperthreading Technology (htt)?

There are a couple other suggestions to try in this post:

Zeno - Thanks ... yes I did clear temp files and successfully ran Spybot. So it seems we cleared that hurdle! Thanks for your feedback on Flashplayer. I really have no idea which account is admin account versus limited. I can only assume the one that flash works fine on is the admin account, so I will see if that takes care of it. Apparently need to uninstall and reinstall. Story of my life all weekend :)

After running Spybot and Macafee I really don't know if I have any other viruses running around, but assume i am clean.

HTT? Above my pay grade/knowledge of the computer :D:! Is a 4 year old Dell running a Intel P4 and XP SP2 is about all I know.

If you have any other tips, let me know.

Thanks

Glad you got Spybot to run okay. :)
When I had problems with Flash player,I had to uninstall/reinstall,using their uninstaller, too.
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
And you can test it here:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_15507&sliceId=1
There's a bit about administrator/limited accounts in here:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_19166&sliceId=1

Well, right now the links are saying my connection was refused,so if you get that, maybe wait a bit and try again later.

Hi again Zenobia
When it stops at cws, there is no error msg. and nothing in red, it just stops. I have tried letting it continue to run(on cws) and let it go for a couple of hrs, and it just stays there. I am running Spybot 1.4. I think cws is what is causing my computer to run slow, cause previously to the cws problem, it was was pretty fast. I am on DSL with Verizon, and I have not called them yet about the cws problem. Thank You so much.

Hello,

This can have different reasons - we are trying to research this case.

1. Please have a look at our FAQ no. 52:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/52.html

2. If you are running Spybot - Search & Destroy on a system that has Hyperthreading Technology (HTT) please read the following threads:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=110
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=390&postcount=4

3. You can try to set you scan priority lower:
- Open Spybot-S&D, then leave it alone
- Open Task Manager, and go to the Processes tab
- Right-click on SpybotSD.exe, and choose "Set Priority..."
- On the box that comes up, check/uncheck boxes so that ONLY "CPU 0" is checked.
- Go back to the already-open Spybot-S&D, and run a scan. It should complete without hanging or losing responsiveness. This can also be done like this:
Please run Spybot-S&D and switch to "Advanced mode" via the menu bar item "Mode".
Now select "Settings" -->"Settings" from the navigation bar on the left.
Under "Main Settings" you will find the point "Scan priority".
There you should choose "Lower" by ticking the checkbox.

4. Please delete your temporary files, clean your cache and delete your download files.

5. The problem could also be caused by an invalid file.
Please have a look at this link in our forum:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=14322

6. Make sure that the fans are running and that dust is cleared from any ventilation ports in the case.
This links might also help:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=1816
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=2163
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=2230

7. If you are not using a very old system without enough storage it might also depend on how much programs you have running when the scan is on and how much memory they need. It should help to close other programs while you are scanning.

Further you can set your virtual memory higher.
Therefore rightclick My Computer on the desktop.
Choose Properties->Advanced->Performance->Settings->Advanced->Virtual Memory->Change.
Please do also have a look at this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_memory

8. If point 1-7 does not help it would be interesting to know which other security softwares you run - probably there is a compatibility problem.

Best regards

I cannot get past cool search no matter how long I let it run, so it never finishes. I tried to R. click when it stops, with no action. it appears to lock up, and I can't do anything, except it takes about 15 min to shut off computer. I am using my desk top cmptr to type this. See my latest post , sub:" Sony lap top with 2 hard drives C and D". Could that post have an affect on the SB problem.

Hi,there. :) That's okay. You can skip that part. When I first saw the title of your thread(Spybot scan detects and stops at Cool Search),I misread it a little and thought maybe Spybot was detecting cws in red or you were getting an error or something like that, and I wanted to know what it was.

If Spybot stops at a point in the scan,it doesn't necessarily mean you are infected. It could be caused by other things, like some of the ones listed in the post above.
You should run through the things in that post and see if they help. This one:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=113038&postcount=12
A good way to do number 4. might be to run disk cleanup:
