View Full Version : Zlob.DNSChanger deleted but suspicious
Hi:
I run Ad-Aware 6.0, Spybot, XoftSpySE, McAfee as my spyware suite. McAfee also acts as my firewall/virus protection.
1). Spybot recently detected Zlob.DNSChanger.
2). It deleted the file. Upon reboot, I do not detect it anymore.
3). However, I'm suspicious nevertheless. My HJT file is enclosed below and I see some registries I don't recognize under (17) below. I don't know if there is anything wrong, because all four of my spyware removal tools detect no issues at the moment.
4). What is your opinion?
Thanks,
Frankly

Frankly,
Hello
Welcome to Safer Networking.
Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
We need it to have HJT in its own folder for backup purposes. I would prefer that you delete HJT from where you have it installed and re install it like this
Download and install Trendmicros Hijackthis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=download)
Download the Trendmicro Hijackthis Installer, follow defauts and it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis and this is exactly where we want it to be.
Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Your log is hard to read, make sure you uncheck wordwrap before you post a new log.
You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)
You still have some issues on your system. , let s do this first.
Your computer has been hijacked by the lovely people in the Ukraine, you are infected with Wareout.
You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.
Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
FixWareout Subratam (http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe)
FixWareout Lonny (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe)
Save it to your desktop and run it.
Click Next, then Install,
Then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.
Save the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt and post it into your next reply.
Now lets check some settings on your system. For (2000/XP) Only)
Go to Start > control panel.
If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections.
Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl.
Left click on properties.
Click the Networking tab.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be available on some systems
Next Go start> Run type cmd and hit OK
Type in ipconfig /flushdns then hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)
Type exit hit enter
Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

It will ask you to confirm the deletion...Say yes
It will ask you to reboot, say yes
If you get a message "pending operations has been stopped by external process!" then reboot the computer manually.
Look for and delete this one also, I am not sure where its located, when you find it if it won't delete run it through Killbox also.
fntldr.exe
I need to see the Wareout log and a New HJT log and let me know how your system is behaving now??
Ken545:
Thanks. Couple of quick coments:
1). When I re-run Spybot after a power down, I am no longer seeing Zlob. Is it possible it has been cleaned by one of the four spyware ap's I've run? Shouldn't it still show up?
2). Regardless of 1) is it most wise to follow the recommendations you make just to be certain all is clean?
Sincerely,
Frankly
Yes I would because you had some other bad entries on your log as well.
Ken
Ken545:
Great stuff- found 4 files with virus. Fixed these per your detailed (very helpful) directions. Some of these were on a back-up hard drive I forgot to scan.
Thanks so much!
1). system boots up faster
2). Zlob appears gone
3). Post your instructions and running all 4 spyware programs in safe mode and McAfee...nothing is turning up.
4). files for your review
5). Please let me know if there is anything else I should do going forward.
6). Anything better than McAfee out there?
I. Fixwareout log:

Wareout looks like it detected a program called Spykiller, its listed on the site for Rogue programs, these are programs that may give false positives in an effort to have you purchase the full version. Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall it if its present.
Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 Update 2 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future
I need to look over your Wareout and HJT log but won't be able to get to that for a few hours or so. So do the above and post a new HJT log and I will be back to you shortly.
You also have another rogue program, try to uninstall it via the Add-Remove Programs.
Aluria Spyware Eliminator
Aluria Spyware Eliminator "Spyware remover" a rogue program of dubious repute - for more information, search the Spywarewarrior_List of non-Recommended anti parasite sites/software for "Alura"
When you remove both those programs and update your Java, post a new log please.
Ken:
1). Aluria is a pain. I found an "ASEscanner" by them and deleted this.
2). Nothing is showing up under "Add/remove Programs" on control panel related to this
3). I searched all hard drives for "Aluria," "ASE," and the like
4). still showing up in HJT file
5). any suggestions?
6). Also, getting many browser time out errors on http://forums.spybot.info .Seems isolated to this link however. Others are fine.
Thanks, Frankly

C:\Program Files\Aluria <-- Delete the entire folder
Reboot and run this cleaner.
Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Thank You Atribune
Post a new log please
Excellent! Aluria finally gone. New HJT log attached.
And, for the moment, internet no longer crawling, either. Had suspected potential issue with recent Java download?
Thanks,
Frankly

Good Morning,
Log looks good :bigthumb:
Did you ever remove SpyKiller ?
P.S. I am leaving today on vacation for the next week. Thank you for all your help. It has been invaluable.
P.P.S. Yes, I was able to successfully remove Spykiller. Thanks again.
Glad things are better :bigthumb:
How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button)
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
Win Patrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html) This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
IE-Spyad (http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?showtopic=6640)
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
Firefox 2.0 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
Zone Alarm (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7228,00.asp) Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Safe Surfin
