On 16 Aug I posted "lordoftibia" to the S&D Software forum. MRU Helper Katana reommended that I post the issue to the Malware Removal Forum. I don't kow if I have an infection. As I said in the original post, I was just finishing the immunization phase of the Spybot 15 Aug update. At that time, I got an alert from Spysweeper that program /QUICKEN/QW.EXE was attempting to change IE security settings for lordoftibia.pl. I am wondering if this is a false positive caused by Spybot's immunization attempt. I noted that the summary of the 15 Aug update on the Spybot homepage listed lordoftibia in both malware and trojans. My concern is that I might really have this potentially bad malware/trojan. I have been using the Windows Onscreen Keyboard since then for passwords. Scans by spybot 1.4, Spysweeper 5.5.7, and Norton Internet Security all were negative. I realize, however, that some stuff still makes it past in spite of our software. HJT log follows; Kaspersky in followon. I appreciate your help.

Sorry for the delay.

Hello GeorgeC and welcome to Safer Networking Forums.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Since I am still in training, I have to let experts check the content of my fixes before I post them so please be patient.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

I will be back as soon as possible with your first instructions!

Since it has been a few days since you first posted your Hijackthis log, I would like to see a new HJT log and an uninstall list.

Step # 1: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Print out these instructions or save them into a notepad on your desktop, because you will not have internet access while in Safe Mode.

Step # 1 Download AVG Anti-Spyware

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here (http://downloads.grisoft.cz/softw/70/filedir/inst/avgas-setup-7.5.1.43.exe) and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (http://downloads.ewido.net/avgas-signatures-full-current.exe) (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now
change to inactive.
Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
Click on the Settings tab.
Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
Close all open windows.
Do not run a scan yet.

Step # 2 Remove Viewpoint

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware (http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3561546).
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Media Player, click Remove.
Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Step # 3 Remove old versions of Java

While you have the latest version of Java installed, older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system and need to be removed.

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Reboot your computer.

Step # 4 Disable Programs

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

- Right-click the tea timer icon in the task bar, select Exit Spybot-S&D Resident
- Open Spybot S&D and from the Mode menu select Advanced mode
- Select the tools section and the resident tab
- Uncheck the Resident "TeaTimer" box
- Close Spybot S&D
- Reboot your machine to complete the process

SpySweeper normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

- Open SpySweeper
- Select Options and then Program Options
- Uncheck the option Load at Windows Startup
- Select Shields and uncheck all there
- Uncheck Home page shield
- Uncheck automatically restore default without notification
- Reboot your machine to complete the process

Step # 5: Remove Hijackthis Entries

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button
Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9ECB9560-04F9-4bbc-943D-298DDF1699E1} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0000-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.4.2) -

If an Administrator has not set a policy restricting access to Internet Explorer settings and you have not configured any software such as Spybot S & D or a similar program to prevent changing Internet Explorer settings, then you can also fix these O6 entries with HijackThis:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

It may be helpful to know that when you put an item in your Trusted Zone, it has pretty much full access to your computer... Are you sure you trust these sites to that degree?? If you're not sure, and/or you do not need these in your trusted zone to facilitate access, or you did not knowingly permit this access yourself, then please fix the following O15 entries:

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://my.att.net

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.jocogov.org

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.symantec.com

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.turbotax.com

Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.

Step # 6: Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step # 7: Boot into Safe Mode

You can go in Safe Mode by restarting your computer, then continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Step # 8 Run AVG Anti-Spyware

Click on Scanner on the toolbar.

Only one infected file, one of my system restore folders, with dropper.small, apparently a trojan of some sort. While the AVG scan was running, I went to the web on another computer and googled dropper.small. It is a high risk, and by some report very hard to remove, keeps coming back. I observed one log in Spysweeper on 19 Aug that showed nothing found, but in the log for the day there were 120 "tamper detections" in a two minute period between 1008 and 1009. All were attempts to gain registry access. My SS log only shows me registry entries from\System\and down. The log I viewed in an other anti-spyware forum (I think SpyDoctor) showed registry entries like mine, but with the intro of: Trojan.Dropper.small.AEK HKLM/system/etc. What do you suggest next?

Requested logs follow:

Computer seems OK, but thought it a little sluggish earlier. Had error just after today's boot: Norton Internet Security had an unexpected error in auto-protect. Required (the usual) uninstall and reinstall Norton, run live update, do a system scan, etc. All OK and green now. I am still concerned a bit about any lingering effects of the dropper.small Trojan that AVG found during the safe mode scan, in my system restore folder. I know that it is now encrypted and quarantined, but at some point shouldn't I be emptying system restore, rescan with AVG, then start restore and create a new restore point? I browsed some other spyware forums and some folks are really having a hard time with some of the dropper.small variants, with invasive changes to many registry files, some creating multiple copies of Windows Media Player, etc. I really appreciate your help. This has been both educational and beneficial for me. New Hijackthis log follows. Kaspersky log in following reply.

Hi GeorgeC.

Thanks for the logs.

Once it has been determined that your computer is clean, I'll have you flush the old restore point(s) and set a new one. Under no circumstance should you disable System Restore while doing a virus/anti-spyware scan. Something could go wrong during the scan and that would leave you without a restore point to go back to.

Your Kaspersky log while clean is showing a lot of junk that is not needed on your computer. You should empty out the following: Your Symantec(Norton) Quarantine and logs, SpySweeper logs, Temporary Internet files, and Temp folders.

Step # 1: Remove Hijackthis Entries

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button
Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9ECB9560-04F9-4bbc-943D-298DDF1699E1} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.

In your next post/reply, I'd like to see a fresh HijackThis log.

I removed temp files, etc., but the security/spyware logs are my security blanket. I feel better having a few days worth of background on my system. I deleted the three BHO's you mentioned, as well as one I thought I had deleted yesterday (no name/no file, starting with 549B5CA7-4A86).

New HJT log follows:

...but the security/spyware logs are my security blanket. I feel better having a few days worth of background on my system.

The more unnecessary stuff you keep on your system the slower it will be.

Step # 1: Remove Hijackthis Entries

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button
Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0000-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0011-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0006-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0009-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -

Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.

In your next post/reply, post a fresh Hijackthis log and please make sure the Format menu in Notepad has Wordwrap Unchecked. Your last HJT log was difficult to read.

Sorry about the Word Wrap; I had been using notepad for something else and forgot to change format back. I noticed in your last post that those files were ones I thought I had previously removed, and found that essentially all the others I had removed had come back (or really never went away). Today the log shows they are truly gone, and S&D notified me that various files were removed, too.

HJT log follows:

Please take the time to read my All Clean Post.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Disable WinXP System Restore

Disable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing them. The only way to erase these files is to temporarily disable System Restore. You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If you are not prompted to reboot, do it on your own.
-----------------------------------------------------------
After the Reboot,
Enable WinXP System Restore
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
The Disable/Re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure This can be done by following these simple instructions: From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub frames across different domains to Prompt When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use An Antivirus Software and Keep It Updated - It is very important that your computer has an antivirus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software, then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit Microsoft Windows Update (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Use the hosts file: Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate web pages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain web pages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional. Download mvps hosts file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html) If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button on the task bar at the bottom of your screen Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then doubleclick it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok.. Use an alternative instant messenger program.Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc/) and Miranda IM (http://www.miranda-im.com/) These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
Please read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place (http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showtopic=5931)
Please read Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and Dialers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial41.html)
Please read Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial82.html)
If you are using Internet Explorer, please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen.
Another good browser is Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/). Opera 9 comes loaded with the tools to keep you productive and safe. Try it today, it's absolutely free. Some of the Opera features are: Customization, BitTorrent, Content blocker, Add your favorite search engines, Thumbnail preview of tabs, Widgets, Transfer manager, Tabbed browsing, Password manager, Sessions (You can save a collection of open tabs as a session, for later retrieval, or start with the pages you had open when Opera was last closed.), Keyboard Shortcuts, Cookie control, a multitude of languages, Validate code, Toggle graphics and style sheets, and Special features such as Full-screen mode, Kiosk mode.
Update all these programs regularly Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
If your computer was infected by a website, a program, IM, MSN, or p2p, check this site because it is Time To Fight Back (http://spyware-free.us/2006/01/time-to-fight-back.html). Follow these steps and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Good luck!

Thanks for your assistance and advice; I will take it to heart. I do have two final questions, though. You recommend removing all old system restore files. I noted a paragraph on an MS page about system restore that indicated a way to remove all but the most recent restore point by using disk cleanup, more options, click system restore, run cleanup, etc. That presumes, of course, that the most recent point is clean. Is this why you recommend removing them all? Isn't this a little risky if there is a shutdown problem? I have been getting occasional but fairly rare shutdown errors in past few weeks, just as Windows is closing, with an error box something like "Instruction (0x69532997?) at Location (0x000000?) cannot be read. Click OK to shut down program now." Before I can react quickly enough to verify the numbers and letters the screen goes black at shutdown.

Second, I enjoyed using the AVG anti-spyware. It is merrily perking along, checking my computer in the background, and playing nicely so far with my Spybot, Spy Sweeper, and Norton Internet Security. If/when I decide to do another spyware scan, should it be done only in safe mode, or can it work well in normal mode?

The way I showed you is just one way to set a new restore point. The way mentioned you above allows you to clear and set a new restore point without having to reboot and it never leaves the computer user without a restore point even for a second, in case something does go wrong.

How often does this happen? Every few days? Once a week? If it happens again within the next few days, note down what it says on the screen (if possible) and post the info here.

It's fine to run AVG Anti-Spyware in Normal Mode. But if you suspect you've been infected by Malware, then its best to do an AVG scan in Safe Mode, where the Malware is less likely to be loaded and therefore easier to remove.

Regarding the strange error message at shutdown, it has occurred three times since 17 August (17, 19, and 28th) according to my daily log. Yes, maybe a little anal retentive, but I like to note start time, shut down, downloads, broadband status (our supplier is often unreliable), and any strange happenings, like error messages, etc. I used to just hit turn off computer and walk away, but one night I heard the little MS chord, looked back just in time to see an error box disappear. So now I will wait till the screen goes dark, with pen and paper handy so that I can fill in the missing parts of the error message. If I ever get the full message, I will post to you.

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate your help and advice. My computer is clean again! Best of luck to you in your training. I hope you graduate with honors!

Thanks for the kind words, GeorgeC. It is great to see that your computer is clean. :bigthumb:

I'll keep this thread open for a few more days to see if you get the error message again.

I have been watching the shutdown sice my last post. Error messages occurred on 17, 19, and 28 August, and on 3 September. I had been watching the screen with a small handheld video camera nightly, and caught a shot of the error message last night. However, it was out of focus, so still don't have necessarily a complete text. But it goes something like this: Application Error. Instruction at "0x69532997" at memory location "0x0000000" could not be read. Click OK to shut down program now." And the screen goes blank within seconds without a click. There always seem to be some programs that have delayed closings, such as Symantec applications, Spysweeper, and occasionally DDE Server. The little closing the program box comes up, program shuts down, and the shutdown cycle progresses. There seems to be no noticeable effect on the computer. I have run the check disk function, and no errors were found. I am more curious than concerned at this point.

Hi GeorgeC.

Next time the error comes up on the screen, see if its possible to get a screenshot of it. If you are able to get one post it here or post just the error message from the screenshot, if you can't post the screenshot.

To make a screenshot, follow the instructions below:

1. When the error message shows up on the screen, press the PrtScrn/SysRq button.

2. Open MS-Paint. (From Start/Run, issue the command "mspaint".) Create a new empty image, and use Edit/Paste to bring in the screenshot you just took.

3. In MS-Paint, click File-Save As, saving the screenshot as .jpg format.

There is also the possibilty that this may not be malware-related. You might want to try posting the screenshot/error message at one of the following forums:

Computer Trouble here: http://forum.computertrouble.co.uk/index.php
or
TechSupportGuy here : http://forums.techguy.org/21-windows-nt-2000-xp/
or
VirtualDr here: http://discussions.virtualdr.com/forumdisplay.php?f=48
or
PCPitStop here : http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showforum=3

All may require free registration before posting for help.

Can't send a screen shot; the error message appears during the last 5-10 seconds of the Windows closing screen. Most of Windows is closed at that time, and a screen shot will not work, or certainly won't be saved during next boot. I will just keep watching for it, and either get better at taking videocam pictures of it, or watch it enough to fill in the blanks in the message. Thanks for the links to the various helper forums. When I get enough info I will use them. Thanks for all your help. I think we can close this thread off now, if you wish.
