View Full Version : Zlob.DNS Changer Issues

Seamhead
2007-08-20, 19:44
Hello,

I've run SpyBot on my computer a handful of times and though it says it has eliminated Zlob.DNS Changer from my computer, it still appears each time I run SpyBot. Clearly the Zlob.DNS Changer file (or whatever the heck it is) is still lurking somewhere in my computer. I'd appreciate an assist on this one. Thanks in advance.

Here's the HJT report:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Sounds like the Ukrainian hackers but let's investigate.

1) Make sure this is not what is causing your issue.
Trojans.sbi - include error
Zlob.DNSChanger
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=16699

2) Tell me if you know what this is:
O23 - Service: MySQL - Unknown owner - C:\Program.exe (file missing)

3) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post the C:\rapport.txt and any information I requested.

Thanks

In response to your questions:

1. I haven't received any error messages during the SpyBot operations; in fact, everything runs smoothly and looks like it's working just fine. It's only when I run it a second time that I notice the Zlob.DNS Changer still exists on my computer. SpyBot is telling me that everything has been fixed, but Zlob is still there.

2. I downloaded a MySQL program a while ago to see if I could create a baseball database, but I never really used it. I tinkered around with it for a day then completely forgot about it.

3. I'll follow your instructions later this evening when I get home from work.

Thanks for the help so far. I'll let you know when I'm able to get the info you requested.

Thanks for returning your information. Read and follow the directions carefully.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed

1) Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.

2) Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your Desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

Post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix, the Fixwareout report and a new HJT log. Tell me how the computer is running now.

Thanks

The computer is running about the same. My wallpaper is gone (which I expected based on your description) and "My Computer" took a little longer to load than normal. The computer seems to be fine (most of the time) while I'm working on it; it just takes forever to boot up or shut down.

One other thing I should mention that I completely forgot about. The first time I ran SmitfraudFix.exe, McAfee warned me about the process.exe file and I told McAfee to remove it instead of trust it (it wasn't until I saw your note that I relized I may have made a mistake by not "trusting" that file. I don't know if that hampered the process along the way (do I need to start over?), but the second time I ran SmitfraudFix.exe, I told McAfee to trust it. If I screwed that part of the process up, please let me know and I'll go back and run the steps over again.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs
That disclaimer is posted and the Smitfraudfix will not run without process.exe, so you must not have removed it.

I want to know about these:

O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

Here is the information I have from another expert:
This is regarding those 017 entries
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\..\{1B95DBEC-3775-4236-8BDB-DA3843rA39D8}: NameServer = 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
Those can be OpenDNS entries, too.
If user has had wareout and ran spybot, it sets those as a default DNS servers.
So if fixwareout report is clean, you can leave them alone if user has set them by himself.

Tell me if this applies to you or if you know that is not the correct DNS information for your computer. If you are not sure then call your ISP and ask them. Make them aware you had wareout infection which may have changed your DNS information.

I can not find information about that file
O23 - Service: MySQL - Unknown owner - C:\Program.exe in red. If you know it is safe and want it left, make me aware. If you do not know, scan it with this tool:
http://www.virustotal.com/

Make me aware of the results.

The computer is running about the same.Does that mean it is back to normal or what?

Have a look at this information to see if any of it helps with performance.

I would like to run another good scan to make sure nothing is hiding.
Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks

I wouldn't have any idea how to set DNS information, so there's no way I set those myself. Do I just call my ISP's technical support to ask them if they can provide that information? What exactly am I supposed to ask them? I'm not real familiar with any of this stuff.

When I attempt to scan that file it wants me to browse my hard drive for the file to scan. I'm not sure where it would be located. I'm pretty sure the file is okay, though.

Does that mean it is back to normal or what?

It's running exactly the same as it was running before I asked for help.

I'll try those next.

I'm running the scan right now and will post the results when I get home later this evening. I have to get to work. Thanks!

Do I just call my ISP's technical support That's right, make them aware you are trying to clean malware and want to be sure your DNS settings are correct.

Please do not quote all of my instructions, a waste of space, scroll back to the information if you need to read it.

Thanks

Just talked to my ISP and sure enough my DNS settings were incorrect. He walked me through the procedure to reset them to the correct settings. Do you need that info?

Secondly I'm running Kaspersky right now and it has found a virus and two suspicious items (33% complete). As soon as it finishes I'll post the report.

Thanks and no...I know the procedure just not your numbers. We might have been able to do it ourselves but this way we know it is correct. We may have to remove the other lines from the HJT log so post a new log when you post Kaspersky.

This will be removed when you clean System Restore files below.

Make sure you removed completely from your computer the tools we used, Smitfraudfix and Fixwareout.

Just talked to my ISP and sure enough my DNS settings were incorrect. He walked me through the procedure to reset them to the correct settings. Do you need that info? I will assume these are the correct settings for your ISP:
http://whois.domaintools.com/205.171.3.65

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run Clean Manager
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

I don't see SmitfraudFix and Fixwareout in my "add or remove programs" list, so how do I uninstall them from my computer?

pskelley

Look where YOU installed them:
C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Desktop\SmitfraudFix

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:Save it to your Desktop

Thanks

I know where they are on my hard drive; I'm looking at them right now, but neither includes an uninstall file in their respective folders. Can I just delete them from my hard drive? Will that remove them completely? Do I need to download an uninstall program to get rid of them?

Just right click on the folder and choose delete.

Thanks
