I'm posting my hijack this log because the entries are too numerous and confusing for me to figure out alone. Many thanks to whomever takes this on. I appreciate your time and generosity!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

First, I need to know why you posted this HJT log, I see some adware but the vast majory of the items are valid? What exactly was the reason you decided to post a HJT log here in the malware forum, are you receiving symptoms that indicate possible malware? Any error messages? If so post those word for word.

Second, read the instructions and make sure you followed them, I do not need anything else posted but the answers to the questions I have asked.

I would also appreciate it if you would copy and paste information without changing anything including the font, that does not help.

Thanks

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

I have read that, now, thoroughly. I am sorry I didn't read the entire thread before starting this one. I only read the post in that thread called "Before you post a log" before sending you my HJT log in this thread. I did not, as a result, do all that was delineated in the thread. I hope it doesn't spoil any help you can give me. If so, please let me know. (And in your response, please ask me to do those things you wish/need me to do.)

First, I need to know why you posted this HJT log, I see some adware but the vast majory of the items are valid? What exactly was the reason you decided to post a HJT log here in the malware forum,

A: I posted this HJT log because the sheer number of items it found, felt overwhelming to me.
A: I would be interested in hearing what adware you see. I'm glad to hear most of the items are valid.
A: I decided to post an HJT log, here in the malware forum, because it was the forum I could find that allowed me to post an HJT log. That is what I need help with. Is there a different forum I should post an HJT log to, besides this one?

are you receiving symptoms that indicate possible malware? Any error messages? If so post those word for word.

I have only received messages from LavaSoft AdAware 2007 Plus that it keeps having trouble with it's own actions: such as getting an update or running a scheduled scan. However, I don't consider those "malware" as I consider it to be a bug in AdAware 2007. But I am not skilled enough to make that judgement call. I'm open to another opinion.

Other than that, no I am not receiving any error messages whatsoever. I'm embarrassed to say, it's just been too long since I ran HJT, as I had forgotten I had it available. Then, when I ran it, the list was much longer than any I had ever encountered before, and frankly that shook me. Many of the items I had never seen before and I saw a lot of doubles of the same item and that concerned me. Not knowing what I should do about these, I came here.

Second, read the instructions and make sure you followed them, I do not need anything else posted but the answers to the questions I have asked.

Since you asked that I read* the "instructions" (I am assuming you mean the ones at http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288 )
I have done that, but as I mentioned before, I did not do* any of those things; and, since you also said you do not need anything else posted besides the answers to the questions you have asked, I am thinking that you did not need me to run the online anti-virus scan mentioned in the "BEFORE you POST" thread; I think that you do not need me to do that? If I am wrong in my assumption, please correct it! :)
*bold used to indicate specifity of action or lack thereof

I would also appreciate it if you would copy and paste information without changing anything including the font, that does not help.

Thanks

My apologies for changing the font to Comic Sans. I was all happy that I could choose the font for the log in HJT and even more pleased I could pick Comic Sans. Only to find out that all my merriment caused you trouble. I'm glad you let me know here, as well as having me read the "BEFORE you POST" thread so that I will curb my merrymaking with fonts to things like Instant Messaging and Office! :red:

I appreciate your time and effort with my case.

Because of time constraints, I will comment only where it is needed to answer a question.

This is the malware forum and the only forum at Safer Networking where you can post a HJT log. Recently purchased by Trend Micro from the creator, here is a tutorial if it helps:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html
Obviously damage can be caused if the tool is not used correctly as is posted in the WARNING and emphasized in RED.

I have only received messages from LavaSoft AdAware 2007 Plus
This is the forum for Spybot S&D: http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4
You can ask questions about Ad-Aware here: http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/

To remove the adware I see in the log and clean, please follow these instructions:

1) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

2) Ad-Aware Ad-Watch
Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.
At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
Uncheck both of those boxes.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.stumbleupon.com <<< your call, that's a lot of access to give them.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run Clean Manager
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/

Restart and post a new HJT log, include any comments you think will help.

If you wish to run a good scan to look for anything hidden from HJT, try this one.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

If you do not think the scan is necessary, then post the log. If it is clean I will have closing information to help you stay clean and safe.

Thanks

HijackThis log will be first. Kaspersky log will be second.

My concerns about HJT log:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
What is ctfmon?

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\ssv.dll
Anything with "no name" in it makes me nervous. What is this?

O16 - DPF: {0EB0E74A-2A76-4AB3-A7FB-9BD8C29F7F75} (CKAVWebScan Object) - http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/english/kavwebscan_unicode.cab
After doing the Kaspersky scan, Kaspersky is now showing up in the HJT?

O23 - Service: ATI Smart - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ati2sgag.exe
What is that? ati2sgag.exe? gag? Unknown owner?

O23 - Service: Google Updater Service (gusvc) - Google - C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe
O23 - Service: SiteAdvisor Service - McAfee, Inc. - C:\Program Files\SiteAdvisor\6066\SAService.exe
Why does GoogleUpdater "service" and SiteAdvisor "service" have to run while I'm not inside a browser? (This info comes from CTRL +ALT +DELETE) It seems there are 2 entries in the HJT log that point to this.

End of my concerns for HJT log.

What about Google, know what that is?:)

ctfmon.exe > http://www.google.com/ = http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ctfmon.exe&btnG=Google+Search

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\ssv.dll
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ssv.dll&btnG=Search
After doing the Kaspersky scan, Kaspersky is now showing up in the HJT?
When you installed the ActiveX, you installed what was needed to run the online scan. You can use HJT to remove the item now if you wish.

ati2sgag.exe > http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ati2sgag.exe&btnG=Search

Why does GoogleUpdater "service" and SiteAdvisor "service" have to run while I'm not inside a browser? (This info comes from CTRL +ALT +DELETE) It seems there are 2 entries in the HJT log that point to this.
Both valid NT Service, you can disable them in services but then the service they provide will not be available.

HJT log looks clean of malware to me, as does Kaspersky:
Total number of scanned objects: 162853
Number of viruses found: 0
Number of infected objects: 0
Number of suspicious objects: 0

Now do this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
