2007-08-26, 18:20
Help! The family computer has aquired an annoying icon on the startbar with popup warning system alert. Scanning with Spybot found and fixed the following:ZlobVideoActiveXAccess, MagicAntiSpy, SpyLockedfakealert, SpywareSecure, VirusProtectPro and ZlobVideoAccessActiveXObject. However the popup remains. Scans with Adaware,AVG and McAfee find nothing even in safemode. Rescanning with Spybot in safemode finds nothing. Attempts to use system restore to a time before the problem appeared fail. Please can you help. This is my first post and I have followed your instructions (before you post) and the logs follow.

The computer seems to be working OK but I dont like the icon especially as the kids use the computer and aren't always careful. Also I found a program had been downloaded VirusProtectPro and this I removed using Add/Remove programs.
Thanks

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Let's investigate like this:
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post the C:\rapport.txt

Thanks

Thanks for posting your information and the feedback, the Smitfraudfix has identified that infection, follow these instructions to remove it.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log, tell me how the computer is running now.

Thanks

McAfee SiteAdvisor doesn't seem to be working right-should I reinstall it. Does this mean that the other McAfee programs will have problems unknown to me.

Thanks for your help

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, I would suggest you contact McAfee Technical Support to see what they advise.
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/default.asp?siteID=1&cnrcheck=done&resolution=1024x768

Your HJT log appears to be clean of malware, I would like to run another scan to look for hidden junk. You have AVG Anti-Spyware onboard, why don't you do this.

Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

If that comes back clean, you are good to go, if you have questions about the scan results, post them.

At that point, please do this: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Some good information for you:

Here is some great information from experts in this field that will help you stay clean and safe online.

Ran AVG as suggestedand found TrackingCookie.Safer-networking. This was deleted however no report was saved. Rerunning AVG without changing any settings found nothing but a report was available and follows
---------------------------------------------------------
AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report

+ Created at: 23:27:51 26/08/2007

+ Scan result:

Nothing found.

::Report end
AVG has been running on the computer for about 2 years and is only updated and run on demand about once a week. Adaware is used the same way.

All system restore points have been deleted and a new one created.
The computer is running faster now than it has for a while. Thank you for your clear instructions and help.
