View Full Version : Never Completes System Scan

For well over a year i've used f-secure along with spybot and ad aware. However for a few months now i've never been able to complete a full system scan for f-secure or adaware. They both just freeze (normally several minutes into the scan) but never on the same file. Quick scans are fine. Spybot scans fine and always says no malware etc.
I've tried various online virus scaners from avg to panda all freeze yet my cpu seems perfecly ok until like i say i try a full scan. Does anyone have any suggestions.
Please bear in mind i'm a total novice of the tech jargon.
Step by Step guides are most appreciated!!!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
There can be many reasons for this and not all of them involve malware. If you feel you have a malware problem then follow the directions posted above and pinned to the top of the forum.

and because hardware issues can also be responsible, I would run a diagnostic here:

Please check the link to make sure it is to your test results before you post it. This one is not, look at the topic I posted a link to, you can see the test results in the posts.
Post a link like this one:

Hi pskelly
I'm confused as to why you think that page does not go to my results page. I assure you it was i simply clicked the test details link to show all details on one page.
Even so i've redone the test and right clicked and copied the web link for the results from my browser

Firstly i know your trying to help so please be patient with me. Right my dad lives 3 doors away i've emailed him the link gone round clicked it and it shows up fine so here goes one more try. I noticed a link that said share with techexpress on choosing it, it said link to your current results, so i copied it and now while replying chose insert link and pasted it into the pop-up box

Thanks, now point your mouse at that link and click it. Scroll down the page until you see the flags, click the word in front of the yellow flags.
Disk, Internet, and Windows. I have time constraints so I will show you the first. When you click DISK, you are taken to DISK DETAILS. Your minor broblem there is:
• Clean up disk space (Drive C) <<< if you click that link you will see:
TIP > Clean Up Disk Space
Drive C has 5806MB of junk files, which is 5 percent of all the space available on the drive.
Click your way through all of the information and benefit from the suggestions. I DO NOT suggest purchasing anything, just follow the tips to see if it helps.
Go back to the links I posted for you and read that information. Quite frankly I can tell you that if you are storing that many junk files you have a maintenance problem.
If you are not familiar with clean manager, that is a tool built into windows to clean the junk for you.
Clean Manager
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/ <<< tutorial
You already know the scans are saying you do not have malware, so it is likely your issues are with maintenance.
I can look at a HJT log to see if anything is unusual, in order to do that, you would need to read and follow the directions I posted in the beginning and post at least a HJT log.
Hope this helps.
Thanks

Thanks for the HJT log, I see no malware in it. You do have have a lot of stuff running, the links I provided will show you how to use
System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) to turn off stuff you may not need to run at every boot.
I see this new f-secure program seems to be a load of programs and while you have to run antivirus, firewall and spyware programs, it sure seems like a hugh load of programs, rminds me of the new McAfee.
As far as Ad-aware, I personally stuck with the old version. You have installed the new one:
C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\aawservice.exe and I question if you need it with all the junk f-Secure is running. I also suggest you discuss your issues with f-security with their technical support.
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/contactus/support/
O24 - Desktop Component 0: Aqua Real - 7db39a0d-580f-4be9-9195-8bfcd226f6c2 <<< You know what this is?
With the junk the diagnostic is finding, you may want to try a good cleaner, try this one:
http://www.ccleaner.com/ on the first page near the download link is a tutorial showing how to use it:
Click here for a Quick Tour..
Since you have a load of stuff installed already, I would uninstall that program after you use it to get a good cleaning.

Hi Pskelly,
Just had a go at all you suggested and like to offer many thanks. With regard to my initial problem f-secure suggested i uninstal spybot and adaware (no suprise there) gave me a link to download f-secure uninstall. Was told to note my reg key and re-install new version.
Having done so i was able to perform my 1st full sys scan in a long time (right before re-installing spybot etc )
oh and that cccleaner is fab who would have thought i had so much crap on hidden away (to me anyhoot)
Cheers
