Hi
Looks like I got the VirtuMonde virus and some others. I've run Ad-Aware, SpyBot, and I have the most current version of McAfee.
SpyBot shows that my system has VirtuMonde (which it can't get rid of) and something called CoolWWWSearch.Msoffice (that it also can't get rid of).
Was feeling ready to wipe my system clean, but after reading posts on the malware board, you all have given me a ray of hope!

Rename HijackThis.exe to random.exe and then post a new HijackThis log
Here's my new HJT logfile, with the program renamed to random.exe. One question: does it matter if I run HJT as admin vs non-admin? If I do the latter, it tells me that there are some parts of the system it can't access. Thus, this logfile is with me logged in as admin. Anyway...

Please run all tools as an admin
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
Download UnDLL by ESET from here (http://www.nod32.it/tools/undll.zip)
Unzip/extact it to a folder on the desktop
Double click on UNDLL.EXE to start UnDLL
Click on Select infected DLL
Locate and select this file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iqwvwysc.dll
Click Open
UnDLL will now attempt to delete the DLL file
If asked to restart your PC, click No
Repeat the above steps for this following file:
C:\DOCUME~1\eckhardt\LOCALS~1\Temp\nnlli.dll
Once you have used UnDLL on all the files, restart your PC manually
Run HijackThis
Click on do a system scan only
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
Then close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked
Go [u]here (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) to run an online scannner from Kaspersky.
Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
Once finished, save the log as "KAV.txt" to the desktop.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

I updated Java -- seems to be OK.
In the middle of the java update, I got a new Windows update with the 'malicious software removal tool.'
I did UnDLL as requested -- both files were deleted.
THE FUN STUFF began with Kapersky, which I started via internet explorer. Mid-Kerpersky scan, my McAfee went nuts and said it deleted 7 vundo trojans ... Kerpersky then continued for another 3 hours (it really got stuck with my outlook folders). At about the 51% complete stage, McAfee popped up again and said it detected and deleted some trojans, and then my IE windows all closed! Right at that point, Kapersky had found 7 viruses and 16 infected files (sigh....).
Thus, I don't have a Kapersky scan -- should I try again?

This is likely because mcafee detected the files when kaspersky tried to scan them, so I wouldn't worry about it that much
Don't try the kaspersky scan again just yet, as a file survived the attempt to delete it with undll, so we need to attempt to delete it again
Download FileASSASSIN by malwarebytes.org from here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/FA_Portable.zip)
Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop
Double-click on FileASSASSIN.exe to start FileASSASSIN
Copy and paste the below into the white box
C:\DOCUME~1\eckhardt\LOCALS~1\Temp\nnlli.dll
Click Execute
Answer Yes to any prompts
Restart
Run HijackThis
Click on do a system scan only
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present)

OK. While running FA, I received two system shutdown messages and to hard re-boot; closed Netscape, re-ran, and then everything went smoothly.
In HjT, I found 020 with no problem, but the 02 - BHO that you listed was slightly different than the one on the HJT logfile -- the numbers did not match, although everything else was the same. I marked it and clicked the Fix Checked box anyway.

That file seems to have survived again
Download catchme from here: http://files.thespykiller.co.uk/catchme.exe
& save it to your desktop
It must be saved as catchme.exe or the following fix won't work
Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that wordwrap is turned off.
catchme.exe -l nul -K "C:\DOCUME~1\eckhardt\LOCALS~1\Temp\nnlli.dll"
Save it to your Desktop as cleanup.bat. Save it as:
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: cleanup.bat
Locate cleanup.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. A DOS window will open briefly and then close, this is normal
Restart
Run HijackThis
Click on do a system scan only
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present)

Looks like its finally been killed
Now to run kaspersky, you'll need to disable the antivirus part of mcafee - don't disable the firewall part
Since you will be vulnerable with your antivirus disabled, do not go web browsing or other internet activities while kaspersky is running, and reenable it as soon as kaspersky has finished & you have saved the log
Please post back with the Kaspersky log & a new HijackThis log

There's nothing to get worried about in the Kaspersky log, just some inactive malware files
Empty the deleted items folder in your email program
Download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Attribune
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Main at the top and choose Select All from the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser:
Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser:
Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Delete the contents of this folder: C:\QUARANTINE\
Then post a new HijackThis log and let me know of any remaining problems

The only odd thing that happens is that I get a message when explorer.exe opens my non-admin desktop (where I do all my work stuff) that says there's an error loading the (dreaded) nnli.dll file. Any way to zap that dialog box during start-up?

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php), you need to be registered to post as unfortunately we were hit with too many spam posting to allow guest posting to continue just find your country room and register your complaint.
Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection
You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented
Turn System Restore off
On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.Restart
Turn System Restore on
On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Uncheck *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Note: only do this once, and not on a regular basis
Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.
Install and use a firewall with outbound protection
While the firewall built into Windows XP is adequate to protect you from incoming attacks, it will not be much help in alerting you to programs already on your PC attempting to connect to remote servers
I therefore strongly recommend that you install one of the following free firewalls: Comodo Firewall (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)or Zonealarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp)

Make sure you install all the security updates for Windows, Internet explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it to that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC, so keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC
Go here (http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/muoptdefault.aspx) to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications
Note: The update process uses activex, so you will need to use internet explorer for it, and allow the activex control that it wants to install
Keep your non-Microsoft applications updated as well
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities, to check for other vulnerable programs running on your PC that are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector) - I suggest that you run it at least once a month
Make Internet Explorer more secure
Click Start > Run
Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
Click on the Security tab
Click Reset all zones to default level
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Install SpywareBlaster & make sure to update it regularly
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.

Install and use Spybot Search & Destroy

Make use of the HOSTS file included with Spybot Search & Destroy
Every version of windows includes a hosts file as part of them. A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
Spybot Search & Destroy has a good HOSTS file built in, to enable the HOSTS file in Spybot Search & Destroy
Run Spybot Search & Destroy
Click on Mode, and then place a tick next to Advanced mode
Click Yes
In the left hand pane of Spybot Search & Destroy, click on Tools, and then on Hosts File
Click on Add Spybot-S&D hosts listNote: On some PCs, having a custom HOSTS file installed can cause a significant slowdown. Following these instructions should resolve the issue
Click Start > Run Type services.msc & click OK

Install a-squared Free & update and scan with it regularly
a-squared free is a product from Emsi Software provided free for private use that can detect and remove a variety of malicious software. You can get it here (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/)
Note: If you have a dialup internet connection, you may also like to install a-squared Anti-Dialer (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/antidialer/) which provides some real time protection against premium rate dialers
