When i turn my pc on shortly after windows logo comes on something odd has started to happen. Screen goes blank and even the lights on my modem go out. Stays like this for 3/4 mins and then boots up as normal. More often or not i get a prompt to run chk disc as i have a corrupt file (but its never the same one twice).

System also takes noticebly longer to close down.

Could this be malware related?

Hello Neila your Kaspersky scan is clean as is your HJT log so chances are very good this is not malware but a problem being caused be a corrupt file or even hardware that is failing.

I doubt I can help, but I can send you where you can probably get help, but let's try a few thing first.

1) Very important is any error messages you get and I need them "word for word". This is Windows talking to you, tell you what the problem is.

2) Since you mention "i get a prompt to run chk disc as i have a corrupt file"
They is a possibility a file/files are corrupted. Windows has a tool to fix this problem if that is what it is called System File Checker. Give this a try first and have your Windows CD handy, if Windows needs a file and it is not stored on your computer it will ask for that CD.

well the booting up problem went as suddenly as it came without me doing anything!

Ran xp disc checker which took an age to run but seems to have resolved the issue.
