View Full Version : Spybot still detecting Virtumonde ?

rbrmartin
2007-09-05, 23:00
:spider:Spybot indicates it cannot fix because a file is in use by memory. When Spybot runs on re-boot it still cannot fix.

Running Windows XP SP1
Webroot SpySweeper - No infection detected
Symantec Antivirus - Updated defs and scanned clean
AdAware 2007- No Issues Found on last Scan
SpyBlaster - updated definitions

Tried running the removal tool recommended by Symantec at their website (Adware.virtumonde removal)...it indicated that no infection was found.

Running a pop-up blocker which seems to be working normally, but would like to get rid of this thing....not sure if it is a false alarm...or an infection. Suggestions...?

Thanks

Hello rbrmartin

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288) You need to read this, I can't help you until I see a HJT log

Download and install Trendmicros Hijackthis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=download)

Download the Trendmicro Hijackthis Installer, follow defauts and it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis and this is exactly where we want it to be.

Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.

DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

This is important, do this before you post a HJT log
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe<-- Right click on Hijackthis.exe ( looks like a man with a spyglass )and rename it to Scanner.exe

Ken545,

Thanks for your quick response. I was able to run the HJT tool and have included the results below. For some reason I was unable to logon from the affected computer to post the results....it accepted my password, but I kept getting dumped back out to the logon screen, and the indication was that I had either not registered, or that there was some other problem...not sure if that is relevant, but thought I'd mention it.

Hello,

I am not looking at any Vundo on your log, with HJT renamed it would have shown up if you were infected.

We need to remove some entries with HJT but we need to shut these programs down otherwise they will prevent the removal .

Spysweeper

Disable SpySweeper:
You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options>Uncheck "load at windows startup"
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck" home page shield".
Uncheck ''automatically restore default without notification".
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Tea Timer

We need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy as to not interfere with the fix.

Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer

WinPatrol

Right click on the Winpatrol Icon in the system tray and shut down or close this program.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

Run this system cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Thank You Atribune :bigthumb:

To be on the safeside, run this program and post the report along with a new HJT log.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Your Operating System is way out of date, don't do it yet but you need to download and install Service Pack 2 to help prevent this garbage from being installed.

Dear Ken 545,

Once again, thanks for you guidance. It looks like the steps you recommended have corrected the problem. I have posted the Combfix and updated HiJackThis logs below. I did run into a couple of interesting things as I was working through the steps, which I will mention in case they are meaningful.
Otherwise, as soon as you give me the green light, I will work on getting the operating system updated.

Thanks again for your help. If the darker side of the internet is that there are folks out there who choose to prey on others, then the miracle of it has to be the emergence of people like you who help complete strangers overcome their mistakes.

(1) I couldn't find a specific entry in the Shields section of Spybot called "home page shield", but basically I disabled all the shields. I also didn't find the
"automatically restore default notification" entry on any tab of "Options" or "Shields". Doesn't seem to have affected the fixes, but my copy of that program is brand new...so I thought I'd mention it. (I will re-enable all the functions as soon as I know we are done).

(2) At one point I saw a pop-up window on the taskbar indicating that (CMD.EXE corrupt file. The file or directory C: is unreadable. Pls run CHKDSK utility.),
I re-booted twice after using the ATF utility and did not see the message again. I will run CHKDSK before upgrading to SP2, but left it alone for now.

Looks like I need to post the Combofix and HJT logs in different replies:...first the

Dear Ken545

Here is the latest HJT log:

Note: I did re-run SpyBot 1.4 and it looked clean (no warning about Virtumonde)....I also updated to Spybot 1.5 and ran it again...also clean. AdAware 2007 scan also ran clean, as did Antivirus.

Thanks
Rbrmartin

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

IE-Spyad (http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?showtopic=6640)
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads
(cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 2.0 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and
painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Zone Alarm (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7228,00.asp) Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I
wouldn't access the internet without it.

Safe Surfn
