Hi. The message 'Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience' appears everytime I use the internet and if I click on one of the options the computer freezes and the only way to switch it off is to turn the power off.

I have run Spybot and AVG anti-spyware and AVG virus scan but this does not solve the problem.

I also notice that the anti-spyware scan always detects spyware called Intelli-direct and although I remove it it always reappears when I restart the computer.

The HJT logfile is shown below. Thanks for your help.

Hello phil_j and sorry for the delay...

I can't see anything bad in HjT log...

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop -> ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Restart your computer to the safe mode:
Restart your computer
Start tapping the F8 key when the computer restarts.
When the start menu opens, choose Safe mode
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Run a scan with Dr.Web CureIt Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, you should now mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.

When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable
After the scan, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot the computer in Normal Mode,
Post the Cure-it report and a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks for your help. I have followed your instructions and the Cure-it report and HijackThis log are shown below.

N.B. While I was copying and pasting the results of the scans, the error box appeared again (the one saying Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close....) so I have run another HJT scan and posted it below the first one I did before the error box appeared to see if there is any difference between them.

Ok so still error messages...

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply

Hi. I posted the main.txt and extra.txt yesterday - or at least I thought I did as it is not showing in the post now.

Anyway, I have re-run the DSS scan but now it is not giving an extra.txt as it did yesterday. I have tried deleting it and downloading it again but still no extra.exe

Yes, I am still getting the error message and still unable to shut down other than by pressing the power off button.

Here is the main.txt from the DSS scan:

Hi :)

This might be the problem:

Total Physical Memory: 239 MiB (512 MiB recommended).
System Drive C: has 0.2 GiB (less than 15%) free.
You don't have enough memory and hard drive is quite full too.

Does the error message have any numbers or technical info? Does this happen only with browser or with some other programs too?

Let's make sure that this isn't overheating....

Please install the free version of Everest (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html)

Let the pc run for a while. Run the program.

On the left pane under "Computer" click on "Sensor"

Now take some notes on the temperature readings.

Let me know the results :bigthumb:

Hi.

Yes, I keep getting messages saying I don't have enough memory

The error report box that comes up on screen only seems to come up when the browser is open and says 'To see what data this error report contains, click here.' After clicking it it opens a new report which gives the following Error Signature:

szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : ntdll.dll szModVer : 5.1.2600.2180 offset 0000300a

This report says at the bottom 'To view technical information about the error report, click here' and clicking opens a new box entitled Error Report Contents and says the following files will be included in this error report:

C:\DOCUME~1\Phil\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER58aa.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Phil\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER58aa.dir00\appcompat.txt

I've downloaded Everest and it gives the following info:

Sensor Type: HDD
Temperatures
CPU 31°C (88°F)
Toshiba MK2023GAS 37°C (99°F)

I hope all this info means something to you as it is all double-Dutch to me....or double-Finnish even! :D:

Thanks!

Ok I'll do some research and get back to you as soon as possible :bigthumb:

Hi :)

Ok...you're not alone with this problem....

Have you installed the latest updates from Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)?

It is possible that automatic updates function is the problem...Let's see if disabling it helps us...

Go to Control Panel -> Security Center -> Automatic Updates

If set to Automatic, Change it to: "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them"

Restart computer.

See if the problem still exists.

phil_j
2007-09-26, 21:11
Hi. I tried disabling the automatic updates function but unfortunately the error report box is still appearing

Mr_JAk3
2007-09-27, 20:08
Did you have the latest windows updates installed?

Does this error appear only with Internet Explorer browser?
Have you tried any other browsers?

phil_j
2007-09-28, 03:00
Yes, Windows Update said 'no high-priority updates for your computer are available.'

Internet Explorer is the only browser I use, I've never used any other.

Mr_JAk3
2007-09-29, 21:27
Hi and sorry for the delay...

Ok let's try if same thing happens with another browser.

Download and install Mozilla Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org) browser. Try surfing the internet with it. Do you still get the same error?

phil_j
2007-10-01, 04:56
Ok, I'll give it a try and let you know. Thanks

2007-10-05, 02:46
Hello again!

I haven't tried out Firefox yet as I noticed over the past few days the error box did not appear. I thought that was problem solved but then it came back again last night. I have been using the internet again today and till now the box has not appeared - probably just a matter of time though  Not sure why but it has definitely got better as before it used to appear usually within a few minutes.

I will give Firefox ago now and let you know how that goes.

Mr_JAk3
2007-10-05, 20:29
OK let me know :bigthumb:

phil_j
2007-10-06, 02:46
Unfortunately it is happening also when I use Firefox

Mr_JAk3
2007-10-06, 21:25
Hi :)

OK this is quite common problem but I haven't found any real answer to it. So you're using Windows firewall, that could be one reason. Let's try with another firewall.

You don't seem to have a third-party firewall (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56) installed. You must install one firewall.
It is possible that you're using the Windows XP firewall. That is of course better than nothing but I recommend that you install a more advanced firewall that gives more protection. Windows firewall doesn't eg protect your computer from inbound threats. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time. I'll give you a few alternatives if you want to install a third-party firewall:

These are good (free) firewalls: Sunbelt-Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm)
ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/)
Sygate (http://http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3356)
Outpost (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1056)
Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com)

phil_j
2007-10-08, 00:35
Ok, thanks.
Should I turn off the Windows XP firewall before downloading a new one?

Mr_JAk3
2007-10-08, 10:20
No please download the firewall to the desktop first. The windows firewall is propably disabled during the installation. If it isn't, you'll need to disable it after the installation. It would be best to do this firewall switch in offline mode.

phil_j
2007-10-09, 16:20
I've done that. Thanks for your help. I'll see how it goes and let you know if the error box appears again.

phil_j
2007-10-15, 03:01
Arrghhh! After a few days of problem free internet browsing on Firefox the error occurred again. The same thing happened - after clicking on 'report problem' the computer would not work and the only way to shut it down was by holding down the power button.

Sorry, but any other suggestions?

Mr_JAk3
2007-10-15, 21:35
Hi :)

Ok now I think that I'll need to guide you to CastleCops (http://www.castlecops.com/forums.html). They have sections for Windows Operating System and Browsers. You'll get more experienced help there (these windows errors aren't really my cup of tea) as this isn't a malware problem.

Sorry and good luck :bigthumb:
