View Full Version : Virtumonde infection
I tried downloading Kaspersky a couple of times, but a box kept popping up, telling me that a "file on 002E08D9.key on (Unknown) is needed." Is this normal...? (I ran SpyBot, Ad-Aware SE, and AOL Spyware Detection after the symptoms started, if it's relevant.)
Here's my HijackThis log:

ms_tac,
Welcome to Safer Networking, not looking at any Vundo but you do have another issue going on, lets do a few things.
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe<-- Right click on Hijackthis.exe ( looks like a man with a spyglass )and rename it to Scanner.exe If Vundo is present it will appear on your log after its renamed.
Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
I need to see the Combofix log and a New HJT log renamed please.
Hi there,

I'm still working on the ComboFix log, so I'll post that in a bit...
A quick question about ComboFix: I downloaded ComboFix off of the first link you gave me (from techsupportforum.com) and ran it. However, after ComboFix reboots my computer, Norton AntiVirus pops up to tell me that there is a high risk malicious script being run and "recommends" that I stop ComboFix... Just wondering if I should override Norton and tell ComboFix to continue running the script.
Good Morning,
Now Vundo is showing on your log  Yes please run Combofix, its safe to run so allow the script.
Do this.
1. Run Combofix
2. Download VundoFix (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4 ) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
3. Run this system cleaner.
Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
I need to see the Combofix log, the Vundo log and a New HJT log please.
Hi again,
Thanks for replying so quickly. I ran the script for ComboFix, and here's the log:

I'll post the VundoFix and HJT in just a bit...
Just finished VundoFix, and it's telling me that it found no infected files, which I'm crossing my fingers that it is the case.
Here's the HJT log, though:

Hello,
Lets do a few things.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
1. Please download The Avenger (http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/avenger.zip) by Swandog46 to your Desktop. Click on Avenger.zip to open the file Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):
Files to Delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ggjlm.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljgg.dll
Folders to delete:
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.
3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
Click Done
Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

Remove these two entries with HJT, make sure the only window you have open is HJT.

Post a New HJT log and let me know how your system is running now???
Hi Ken,
I'm writing this from a different computer because the infected one won't properly start up. After the Windows XP screen opens and before the welcome screen (where you're supposed to choose the account you want to log in with) completely loads, there's a box that pops up that says:
lsass.exe - System Error
Object Name not found
After I click OK, the computer goes back to the Compaq and Windows XP screens, and it keeps cycling over and over each time I press OK on the lsass.exe error box.
I tried starting it up in safe mode, but the same problem occurs...
Try starting your computer by pressing the F8 key and when the menu comes up, use the up and down arrows to scroll to Last Known Good Hit enter
!!!!!! Much, much better; thanks so much for all your help. Here's the HJT log again...

Thats good news, don't know why that happened, but lets not use ATF cleaner again, I am going to contact the writer and get some feedback from him. I have been at this for many years and never saw this happen before.
Your log looks fine except you need to update your Java
Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 2 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future
Depending on how your manufacturer set up your system, you may or may not need the Windows XP CD. If you have a I386 folder on your C:\ drive you may not need the disk.
Click Start>Run
Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files .
How are things running now??
Everything's back to normal. Thank you so, so much for your time and all your help.
I just have one last question. When I initially scanned the computer with SpyBot after the infection, it told me that a backdoor Trojan was causing the problems. Does this mean that I should reformat the computer after I've backed up all my files, to be safe? Or is it safe enough as it is?
The only thing I saw on your original log was this, you can read about it but its been removed.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{37-74-46-68-ZN}] C:\Documents and Settings\Tiffany\Local Settings\Temp\thinksnet.exe CHD003
http://www.prevx.com/filenames/X3537964138101287805-0/THINKSNET.EXE.html
As far as a backdoor, yes they can compromise your system but outside of the above entry, I am not looking at anything bad . You can do a couple of things if you wish, but reformatting need not be one of them.
Run Spybot Search and Destroy and see if its still picking up that entry, if so copy and paste or write it down exactly and let me see it.
I would also like you to run Combofix again and lets see if it still picks up that entry we removed.
So post the Combo fix log and let me know about what Spybot finds.
Great about the not needing to reformat. Spybot didn't pick up anything, but here's the ComboFix log:

I'm going to select all the problems, fix them for right now, and re-scan, and I'll let you know what it comes up with.
All those bad entries that Ad Aware found were in your System Restore Program, lets flush it all out.
System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points
Turn off System Restore.
Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot your computer
Turn ON System Restore.
Right-click My Computer.
ClickProperties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Create a new Restore Point <-- Very Important
Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You need to go into the Control Panel and switch to Catagory View to be able to Create a New Restore Point
System Restore Tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html) <-- If you need it
REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Authentication Packages"= msv1_0 C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\mljgg
Copy the entire contents inside the Quote box and Paste it into Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad ) name the file Regfix.reg and in the drop down box, save it as All Files. Save it to your desktop. Then Rightclick on the Regfix.reg file and click on Merge, when it asks you to merge with the Registry, say yes.
Done; scanning with Spybot and Ad-Aware don't come up with anything anymore. Do you need me to do anymore scans or post anymore logs?
Why don't you post one last HJT log for review and if all is ok I have some free programs for you to install to help keep you more secure.
Ken
One problem: I restarted the computer this morning, and the lsass.exe problem came up again. I was able to start the computer with the last good configuration again, but will the lsass.exe box continue to occasionally pop up, and why?
Thanks; here's the new HJT log:

And also -- is it all right if I delete the two Regfix files I've created, or will that screw something up in the system?
Yes, you can delete all the regfixes .
lsass.exe is part of the windows operating system, sometimes malware can corrupt this file. A couple of ways to go on this is to open IE and go to Tools> Windows Updates and download the latest updates.
The second way is to run the System File Checker that will replace any missing or corrupted files.
Depending on how your manufacturer set up your system, you may or may not need the Windows XP CD. If you have a I386 folder on your C:\ drive you may not need the disk.
Click Start>Run
Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
IE-Spyad (http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?showtopic=6640)
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads
(cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
Firefox 2.0 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
Zone Alarm (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7228,00.asp) Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Let me know how it went??
Hi Ken,
I ran the system file checker, and hopefully it fixed the lsass.exe problem. Otherwise, the computer seems to be back to normal, and I've downloaded the programs to keep it clean. Thank you so much again for saving my computer! :)
Cheers,
ms_tac
Your very welcome, glad we could help:bigthumb:
