View Full Version : can't install Kaspersky Online...

I tried to install Kaspersky and got the following message:
"The file 002E08D9.key on (unknown) is needed. Type the path where the file is located, then click ok"

I don't know what this means, or where to find the file, so i clicked "cancel." Ended up getting a red X and was told could not install because IE security settings had to be set to medium (they are) and I need to be a system administrator (I am).

Not sure how to proceed because Kaspersky is one of the first steps here...

Can someone please help? thanks

There's a note at the bottom of those steps:

If you cannot run the Spybot or Anti Virus scan, please go ahead and post the HJT log along with a note regarding scan/s failure.

Joe L.:

A HijackThis log (sometimes abbreviated HJT log) is used for posting in the Malware Removal (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22) forum. The log shows information about what is running in your system.

The complete instructions for posting in the Malware Removal (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22) forum are in the following pinned (sticky) thread in that forum:
"BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) ( http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

Thank you - I will run that scan and post that log soon. I admittedly posted a thread in the Malware section before I read the directions and so it has no log and I think that is why no one has responded to what I posted there. I'm trying to do it correctly now and get the thread posted, but when I do, can you please tell me the best place to put it? Should I attach it here in the 'tavern,' post a new thread, or post it in my original thread?

Thanks for the help!

"The file 002E08D9.key on (unknown) is needed. Type the path where the file is located, then click ok"

I don't know what this means...

It wants your Kaspersky licence KEY file. Assuming that you purchased Kaspersky online, they should have e-mailed you instructions on how to obtain your KEY file to unlock the Kaspersky software. Just download it onto your desktop, and then you can tell Kaspersky where it is during the installation.

If you purchased Kaspersky from their website, and did not receive any instructions via e-mail, then you may need to contact their technical support.

If you were just wanting the free 30-day trial of Kaspersky, then you can get it from the download page (http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/).

You can also try NOD32 (http://www.eset.com/), avast! (http://www.avast.com/), and AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/). Both avast! and AntiVir come in versions that are free for use at home, although AntiVir's update process is very annoying, and it will show you ads for it's premium version when it downloads updates. NOD32, and almost any avast! software (free or otherwise) come with trial periods, so you can try before you buy/register/etc. Makes it easier to find the software that works best for you.

I do have to say that Kaspersky is good software, and that I admire their team of experts. When I find a new virus, and e-mail it to my list of anti-virus software companies, Kaspersky always responds right away with their analysis, and they always add detection for the new viruses faster. One day they responded to me within 10-20 minutes of me sending them the sample, and they told me what the virus did, and what they had decided to call it. Kaspersky may not be as fast as NOD32 and avast!, and it may not be as light on system resources, but it does keep you well protected. ;)

Hi GT500,

Joe L. is referring to the free online scanner.
There have been a few problem with using it lately, but it seems to be working now.

That's what the topic title says, but when he mentioned a .key file, I thought he was referring to the actual Kaspersky software. I guess I stand corrected. ;)

If I hadn't had the same error when I tried the online scan, I would have assumed the same
