Infected?

HI everyone,

I admire your work and dedication to make the world safe for netziens like myself. I have a problem; something is hijacking my internet and i can't figure out what.
I'll try and keep this short: each night at about 10 pm my internet drops out.
(in case your wondering, there are three computers in my house, each connected to the wireless router; THe first two are laptops, connected via wireless card: the third is the one i use later in the night, hard wired via a network cable to the router. it's encrypted with WPA string or something.)
anyway every night at 10 it drops out,(or at least slows to a super mega crawl) and I'm wondering could I be infected? it usually works fine during the day, it's really strange and I'm not sure what to do.
as you may have guessed I don't know alot about the technical side of computing, I just like playing an hour or two of online fps each evening.
anyway i hope i have given you enough background information and I do appreciate any help you may be able to give. I am usually pretty careful on the internet so i'm not really sure what's happening.

ok good. it could just be a harmless leftover registry entry. if your av and antimalware came up clean i wouldnt worry about it anymore.

you have several antimalware apps. i see spybot, ad aware, avg. only use one real time protection component, if you use tea timer than dont use avg's guard (which is disabled after 30 days, unless purchased) having two running at the same time can bog you down.

avg and everything scanned ok, but I go to:
run => msconfig => startup
and it still appears there. It not selected to run at startup though.

Yep the connection slows when I am playing online games. I'll disable avg anti-spyware and just use teatimer.

ok. if your AV came up clean, thats good. you also couldnt find the .exe. those msconfig line entries are permanent. to remove them would require a registry hack.

you might be experiencing packet loss/latency during online game play. try the game at different times to see if that might be the problem.

Thanks for all your help! I feel much better that it's not an infection.

I'll definitely try it at different times. I've been reading about wireless and i think it could have something to do with others piggybacking on my connection, (the kids next door to be specific), So i'll try changing my password every day and stuff like that.

wireless router

you should be using WEP or WPA encryption at the least with your router. only computers knowing the "key" can use/join the router. dont use the routers default log in, change it. visit you router makers webpage for more info.

i have a few computers around myself that i can hitch a ride on, i can log in to the routers webpage, i could change passwords, get email addresses, ip's, MAC add. there lucky iam a nice guy! or am I?

I know this is sort of off topic, But ...

I have a WPA encryption, I had already changed the default passwords.

What at first I thought was spyware using my connection turned out to be a neighbor - it seems every few days he somehow gets my WPA key and begins downloading.

It seems ok changing the password every few days, (though it is quite annoying,) but is there anything I can do on my router to get his IP addy, email passwords, and MAC (whatever that is)?

some routers can only allow computers to join by MAC addresses. i would visit your router makers web page and make sure your using all its security enhancements that its capable of.
