View Full Version : Malware/Trojan/Virtumonde/Diskcleaner taken over computer!

Hello. I'm having major problems with what was originally Diskcleaner 2006. I would run Spybot and it gets alot but the diskcleaner2006 cannot be removed and I see entries with the description "virtumonde" and trojan. I can't seem to get rid of them even with using Spybot, AdAware and AVG.
I'm only mildly computer savvy and cannot get onto secure websites to pay bills ("cannot display page" ) errors and my computer... It's not safe to let my kids on at this point since I don't know what wierd ad will pop up.
Can anyone help? I would greatly appreciate advice on how to get rid of these things. I'm afraid that some trojan is stealing info or passwords and don't know what to do at this point...
Thank you!

Hello onefabmom

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

Download and install Trendmicros Hijackthis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=download)

Download the Trendmicro Hijackthis Installer, follow defauts and it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis and this is exactly where we want it to be.

Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.

DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

This is important, do this before you post your Hijackthis log.
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe<-- Right click on Hijackthis.exe ( looks like a man with a spyglass )and rename it to onefabmom.exe <-- ont forget the .exe

I hope I have done this correctly...
I read the info on what I was supposed to do prior to posting and I updated Spybot, although I wasn't able to run it in safe mode. It would not run and then i just got a dark screen with nothing...Had to reboot because it wouldn't let me do or see anything..(?)
Thank you!

Good Morning,

You posted the log correctly , thank you, but the infection your talking about may be related to the Vundo Trojan and the thieves that have written it have written it to evade a HJT scan and by renaming HJT to something else if its present on your system it will show up on your HJT log so I need you to rename it. Easy to do.

1. Click on My Computer
2. Click on your C:\ drive
3. Click on Program Files to open the folder
4. Click on Trendmico to open the folder
5. Click on Hijackthis to open the folder
6. Right click on the Hijackthis icon ( looks like a man with a spyglass)
7. A menu will open
8. Click on Rename and type in onefabmom.exe <-- Dont forget the .exe

So at this point I am looking at another infection that needs to go, lets do this.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

I need to see the Combofix log and a new HJT log renamed please

onefabmom,

Your doing well :bigthumb: A little more to do.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Msyvz] C:\WINDOWS\system32\??pPatch\j?vaw.exe

Open Notepad and copy all the text inside the quote box by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qqtwa.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qqtwa.bak2

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{17AC83B7-170E-6EFB-7877-49B60C48F1C2}]
C:\WINDOWS\system32\njjdpsrb.dll

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{A1C9752B-9552-4A04-B29C-38D2626A6C16}]
C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqq.dll

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\awtqq]
C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqq.dll

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Things are looking better :bigthumb:

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 2 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

One of the entries we removed with HJT hides itself by adding question marks to the file, do this and it may identify the file.
Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as FindFile.bat and save it on your Desktop.

dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\??pPatch /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate FindFile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here.

Just post the results of this file, the rest of your log looks fine:bigthumb:

Hi..
I ran Adaware a couple hours ago and it showed some "threats" that were "cookies" and one "Virtumonde" entry. It deleted them.
My system is running better when I'm using Internet Explorer through AOL..
I tried Mozilla to access some banking (secure) websites and other secure websites because IE was not able to display them and so I thought Mozilla might work better. Same "cannot display page" error.? I can't access any "secure" websites, like ones to pay bills or order payment information. Do you think this particular problem could be being caused by something other than the virtumonde/diskcleaner/trojan things that had turned up on my computer? I havn't seen a "diskcleaner" window pop up since I followed your latest directions!!:)
What can I do in the future to make sure these things don't get on my computer again? Any insight for protection would be so appreciated!:)
Thanks!
Kathy

Your log looks fine :bigthumb:

We can try changing some settings.

Close any instance of Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

Go to Start> Control Panel> Internet Options . You shoud be on the General Tab
Delete Cookies
Delete Files > and offline content as well
Then go to the Programs Tab and Reset Web Settings

Download: DelDomains (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf) and save it to the desktop.

Close all open windows and your browser
Right Click DelDomains.inf and select > Install
Reboot your computer

Open IE and go to Tools > Internet Options> Security > Restricted Sites> Sites and make sure that the websites you cannot access are not listed, if they are you can delete them.

See if this helped. You may want to think about upgrading to IE7, its more secure than IE6, you can download it via the Windows Updates.

Let me know if it helped ??

Hi again....:)

I did all you told me to including downloading IE 7 and my computer has not run this well or looked this good in a verrrryyyy long time! I ran adaware and got one critical file that was a data miner cookie? But it was deleted. Ran spybot after that and it showed absolutely nothing. Havn't seen that in a long time either! And to top it all off I can now access secure websites that IE couldn't or wouldn't display for the last couple of months. Amazing!!!
Thank you so much from this barely computer savy mom for making all your instructions so straightforward and understadable. I appreciate YOU!
Thanks again:)
Kathy

Good Morning Kathy,

Glad things are running well for you :bigthumb:

I ran Adaware a couple hours ago and it showed some "threats" that were "cookies" and one "Virtumonde" entry. It deleted them. You will never get away from cookies, most websites require them for access, and the Vundo entry Spybot picked up was most likely a registry entry that was no longer valid.

You can run this system cleaner maybe once a week or so that will get rid of them and keep your system nice and tidy. Its a free program and yours to keep. I would not run the Issues scan unless you know exactly what your doing. It sometimes picks up legit items that you do not want to remove.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to clean temp files from your computer.

Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Here are some free programs to install, these are must haves to help keep you secure

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Win Patrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html) This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give
you the option to deny the change.

IE-Spyad (http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?showtopic=6640)
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads
