Hello. I've been trying to get this Virtumonde virus off of my girlfriend's laptop for a week now with no success. I've tried Ad-Aware 2007, Spybot S&D, and even VundoFix, and it just keeps on coming back, so I thought I'd post for help here.

Hi, welcome to Safer Networking!

Download combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/ComboFix.exe)

1. Save it to your desktop.
2. Make sure you save and close ALL open windows and programs that you are running in the taskbar as combofix will attempt to end all non-windows processes for a faster and more successful cleaning.

Click start > run > copy and paste:

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

*Uninstall the items in bold if found:

Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player
are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". In 2006, this may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware (http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3561546).

*Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the items I listed in bold if found.

If you decided to remove viewpoint, delete the following folder:

Save and Name it as "CFScript"
Drag and drop CFScript.txt to your copy of combofix.
You can take a look at the image below if you're unsure on how to do it.

Combofix wil restart your machine then it will produce a log afterwards.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer

This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

If Kaspersky is to be trusted, looks like I'm still not clean...

It's to be trusted. Kaspersky is one of the best.

However, what it found are inactive files as most of them are in the quarantines of different programs.

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine <<Norton's quarantine
C:\System Volume Information <<System restore folder. You will only be infected if you use system restore.
C:\qoobox <<Combofix quarantine.

We need to temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer, it may stop our fix.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First:
- Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
- Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
- Open Spybot S&D
- Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
- Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
- If your firewall raises a question, say OK
- Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
- Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

*Open Norton Internet Security window.
- Click on Norton Internet Security tab.
- Click on Settings.
- Click on Internet Security and Firewall Options. (If you are not able to see that option please scroll down the scroll bar)
- Click on General Setting. Uncheck "Turn on protection for my Symantec
Product."
- Click ok.
- Click on General Setting. Check "Turn on protection for my Symantec
Product."
- Click ok.

Copy and paste the text inside the Code Box below into Notepad
Choose File > Save As and under "Save as type", choose "All Files".
Type clean.bat in the File name and save it to your desktop.

Hello again. The computer does seem to be running much better. I was unable to do the Norton bit, as no such option existed (and there was no scroll bar). I checked through the options menus as well, but nothing. At any rate I did run the batch file. Here's the new HJ log.

Hi,

You can just empty the contents of this folder:

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine

Empty your recycle bin.

Congratulations your log looks clean!

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.

Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr

Select the More options tab

Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.
