Symptoms:
1. Sunbelt CounterSpy v2 reports "high risk" "MiniKey Log" C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\mchInjDrv.sys, but it is still there the next scan after having it remove it. Spybot S&D does not report this one, even in Safe Mode.

2. Computer often (but not all the time) runs very slowly and the hard drive light is very busy for 10-20 minutes at a time.

3. One or more Tray program icons very often do not show up after a reboot. This includes Sunbelt (Kerio) Personal Firewall (SPF). When SPF icon is missing, sometimes the kpf... processes do show up in the Task Manager, and sometimes they do not.

mchInjDrv.sys is a component used eg by many security programs. It can be used (like many other things) fo malicious purposes.

You don't have malware there, just some leftovers.

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

Click the Empty Selected button.

Thanks for your help! I think things are better. :)

However, there is now a new odd :alien: behavior.

Every time I start up Windows, a dialog appears stating that the "Turbo Tax It's Deductible 2006" Install program cannot find some of the files it needs. This is very odd! That program is already on the computer. I installed it many months ago and am not trying to re-install it. (I did recently move the original downloaded installation files off to a CD though to free up disk space.) This behavior just started in the past 3-4 days. When this happens, I cancel that install. This same installation dialog also appears every time I open Spyware Blaster and click the link to check for updates. Very, very odd. Is some nefarious process trying to run programs on my computer in an effort to harvest financial information? :scratch:

Hi and sorry for the delay :)

Hmm are you sure that you haven't moved some of the files that the program needs? A re-install/repair install propably helps.

There were no signs of malware in the logs but we may run one more scanner just to be sure.

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop -> ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Restart your computer to the safe mode:
Restart your computer
Start tapping the F8 key when the computer restarts.
When the start menu opens, choose Safe mode
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Run a scan with Dr.Web CureIt Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, you should now mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.

When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable
After the scan, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot the computer in Normal Mode,
Post the Cure-it report and a fresh HijackThis log

I downloaded and ran DrWeb in Safe Mode as you described. It found and deleted 4 entries. There were also 3 other entries it identified as process kill or process view programs, but it did not ask me to do anything with those. One of those 3 came with the HP computer, the other two are from the smitrem security program that I had downloaded to cleanup a previous issue a long time ago, as instructed by this Safer Networking forum.

BTW. I uninstalled TurboTax Its Deductible 2006 and now the installation popup no longer appears. Also, I read a post on a PCTools forum where the PCTools staff said that their ThreatFire (formerly CyberHawk) does use mchInjDrv.sys and if one deletes it, their root kit scanner will no longer work. It reappears on next reboot anyway, so I think all is fine on that front.
