Hello,
I reviewed a post that was from kucheque on 9-20-07 and I believe that I might be in the same boat. I did what Shaba said and here are the results. Can someone please let me know if my system is also infected with a virus and how to get rid of it?
Thank you so much for your help.

hi HAH34,

i didnt look at that post so i dont know what you did, but you still have some malware.

first: disable spybots tea timer so it will allow htj to make changes:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.
------------------------------------
next we will use hjt, then boot directly into safe mode:

HJT:
scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\printer.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinAVX] C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinAvXX.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinAVX] C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinAvXX.exe

O4 - Startup: system.exe
O4 - Global Startup: autorun.exe
------------------------------
ok next boot into safe mode, might want to copy/paste this into notepad and save it to your desktop so you can read it in safe mode:
to reach safe mode you would tap the f8 key during a computer restart, chose the first option from the list safe mode

ok once at the safe mode desktop, to show all files do this:

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok
-------------
next using explorer, right click start button>explore, navigate to the:
C:\WINDOWS\System32

and look for and deletethese two: WinAvXX.exe and printer.exe
---------------
while you are in safe mode it would be a good idea to run your antivirus and spybot once.
---------------
after the above in safe mode reboot computer normally.
first stop:

Please download ComboFix (by sUBs) from one of the following links:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Save it to the Desktop.
Double-click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running.
It may cause it to stall.

When finished, it produces a log.

Please provide the contents of the ComboFix log in your reply--and a new hjt log.

hi HAH34,

hjt log looks ok now. did you find those two .exe in the system32 dir? if all is good we can make new restore points like this:

One of the features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is agood idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot

The two files, WinAvXX & printer were in the system 32 dir, but they didn't show up as exe files, It just said that they were application files and the icon was a white box with a blue bar across the top. I did delete them so they are gone. The only file that I was not able to find was at the beginning of your first set of instructions. The ones that you had me check in the HJT scan...Global Startup:autorun.exe. That one was not in there but everthing else was.

I do want to say "Thank You!" Your help has been appreciated and your instructions are very straight-forward and easy to follow. You made this a very pleasant extermination experience.
Thank you!!!
