Hi,

I used my USB drive on one of my college computers and got a virus... and now it has got into my laptop... both college PC and my laptop have Windows XP Pro with SP2.

Every time I insert the USB drive into my laptop, it erases all the data and writes the following files into it.

autorun.inf (166 bytes -is blank when i open it with notepad.)
MicrosoftPowerPoint.exe (462050 bytes, hidden)
fooool.exe (2560 bytes, hidden)
explorer.exe (9728 bytes, hidden)
RECYCLER\INFO.exe (106496 bytes, hidden)
RECYCLER\desktop.ini (63 bytes, hidden)

I tried formatting my USB drive but it will write the files again in it... I tried changing the USB drive name but even that is restored to the original name that it had when it got infected...

I tried scanning it with AVG Internet security 7.5 with latest updates but it did not detect any problems!

Then I ran Spybot S&D with latest updates but that too didnt find any problems!

Then I ran online antivirus scan of Bit Defender and it found virus W32.Small.r in file RECYCLER\INFO.exe

I got a utility with my USB drive to lock an area of the drive... I locked most of the space (had to keep minimum 3mb open) and filled that open space with text files... with just 14 byte remaining... When i removed the drive and inserted it again, it told me that the drive is not formated...

I searched the net for removal of the files - MicrosoftPowerPoint.exe, fooool.exe, INFO.exe, explorer.exe but I didnt find any files or registry entries specified in the websites for removal of these viruses...

I ran HijackThis on a PC with Deepfreeze before and after inserting the USB drive... It got infected but both gave the same log file...

Hi

First download and run Flash_Disinfector (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/Flash_Disinfector.exe) with your usb stick inserted.

After that download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply

Hi

Did you run flash_disinfector? Did it have any effect?

Start hjt, click do a system scan only, check:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {12F02779-6D88-4958-8AD3-83C12D86ADC7} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {12F02779-6D88-4958-8AD3-83C12D86ADC7} - (no file)
9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O16 - DPF: {D6FCA8ED-4715-43DE-9BD2-2789778A5B09} (NPKCX Control) - https://keycrypt.levelupgames.co.in/...rypt/npkcx.cab

Close browsers & other windows. Click fix checked.

Have you set Rediff search as your search page on purpose? If not check & fix also these entries:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://server.toolbar.rediff.com/too...l?mode=toolbar
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://server.toolbar.rediff.com/too...l?mode=toolbar
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://server.toolbar.rediff.com/too...l?mode=toolbar
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://server.toolbar.rediff.com/too...l?mode=toolbar
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://server.toolbar.rediff.com/too...0/install.html

Post a fresh hjt log.

Hi...

I think my problem is solved... I turned off autorun from gpedit.msc and then after inserting my USB drive, I formatted it. It worked... I used a college PC for this...

To be sure that this thing won't happen again, I tried turning off autorun in my laptop too... but as soon as I run gpedit.msc, my laptop just restarts... I tried it a couple of times... and from then, everytime I start my laptop I get an error message that an error occured in services.exe and my laptop restarts when I press OK.

I tried running SFC, but that didnt solve the problem, so I formatted my C: and installed a fresh copy of Windows XP. I havent used it much after the reinstallation, so donno if the problem is still there...

I had formatted my laptop about a week ago when I came to know of the malware infection and didnt insert my USB drive in it after it... I ran HijackThis on it and it showed no suspicious entries...

Thanks Blade81 for your help...:bigthumb:
