View Full Version : Help please - can't get rid of Zlob.DNSChanger

want_to_learn
2007-09-28, 00:29
I have a Zlob.DNSchanger infection that Spybot detects and supposedly fixes, but the problem remains (redirection to rogue websites) after fixing and can be found again when rebooting and running Spybot. In my ignorance I've manually deleted (yes I know that was stupid) two registry keys that smitfraudfix said might be the problem and now I get errors when connecting to my ISP relating to a missing TCP/IP setting. Hijack This log attached - someone please please help!!

Hi

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you
will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make
sure Run fixit is checked and click Finish. The fix will
begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer;
please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is
normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of
the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

Many Many thanks for your help Blade, this is really appreciated!

I ran Fixwareout and on reboot i got the message:

"If you have interconnection problems double click the registry file dns.bak in the fixwareout folder on the root of the drive windows is installed"

I have not done this. I do get the message "TCP/IP CP reported error 31" on attempting to log onto my ISP, although I can connect. The malware problem (redirection to rogue websites) remains

Hi

Let's check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category
View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise
double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default
connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left
click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says
Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

After that run fixwareout again and post its log & a fresh hjt log. Still same issues after these steps?

Hi Blade and thanks again,

I have four possible connections within network connections, one dsl, two dial up and one vpn for my employer. In each case the "use DNS server automatically" radio button had the the two rogue dns addresses set for the preferred and alternative DNS settings. I have selected the "use DNS servers automatically" radio button for each possible connection.

Problem seems to be resolved, but I have a copy of autoruns and this reports a catchme.sys file missing from startup (please see screen dump). Is this anything to worry about?

Hi

Problem seems to be resolved, but I have a copy of autoruns and this reports a catchme.sys file missing from startup (please see screen dump). Is this anything to worry about?
What screen dump do you mean?

Hi again Blade and thak you once again.

Sorry, I had difficulty upoading this last night due to the restriction on file size. Screen dump attached. I've sent the file as a zipped bitmap as this is the only way I can send the file and comply with the file type/size limitations

I also have the error "TCP/IP CP reported error 31" when I attempt to connect to my ISP, which I think is a result of my deleteing what I thought were the 2 offending registry keys before I sought help. Is this something you could help me resolve please?

Hi

I couldn't open the attachment due to error. Maybe you could upload the file to http://rapidshare.com ?

You might want to try WinSock XP Fix by Option Explicit (http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html)

Hi Blade

Screen dumps of Autoruns and the error message I get when connecting to my ISP are on the links below:

http://rapidshare.com/files/59599953/Autoruns_Screen_Dump.jpg.html

http://rapidshare.com/files/59600268/Connection_Error_Message.jpg.html

I ran WinsockXPFix but I still get the above error message when trying to connect. The two registry keys I deleted in my ignorance were:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{2F8AD18C-E761-44BF-93BD-43B78CFAED4C}: NameServer=85.255.113.146 85.255.112.111

and

HKLM\SYSTEM\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{2F8AD18C-E761-44BF-93BD-43B78CFAED4C}: NameServer=85.255.113.146 85.255.112.111

Once again, thanks

Hi

Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad (save it as all files (*.*)) on the Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services]
"catchme"=-

It should look like this -> http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/reg.gif

Doubleclick fix.reg, press Yes and ok.

(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here (http://www.nellie2.co.uk/file.htm#How_to_Make_a_.Reg_File_) with screenshots.)

Then the other problem... Could you try to add IP addresses of your ISP's DNS servers manually?

want_to_learn
2007-10-02, 21:25
Thanks Blade,

The rogue startup entry has gone.

With regard to the manual adding of the ISP's DNS servers: I can't find anything on the Tiscali website; could you please explain how I would go about this or send a link? Would reinstalling the ISP's software solve this?

My machine now seems slow to boot up. Is this possibly a result of installing Hijack this and Fixwareout?

I appeciate this goes way beyond fixing the original spyware infestation but any advice you can give would be appreciated.

Thanks once again.

Hi Blade,

I still get the "TCP/IP CP reported error 31" message when connecting to my ISP, even after reinstalling the ISp/modem software, although I can connect.

The system seems a little slow to boot up (haven't noticed any problem with shutdown).

Oh, dod I need to do anything about the previous system restore point in case the trojan is lurking there?

Once again, thanks.

Hi again Blade,

The TCP/IP error seems to have resolved itself!!!??!!

I've run ATF and the Kaspersky Online Scanner. KOS detects 1 virus and 4 infected items but these relate to the copy of Smitfraudfix on the machine. KOS and HJT logs follows.

Hi

Nice to hear that problem appears to be resolved :bigthumb:

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Download Adaware
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=48)
The program is available for download here (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10319876.html?tag=lst-0-1)
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Hi Blade,

Problems all sorted.

There are few people in the world who will help others for nothing, and there are even fewer who will help total strangers for nothing. From me, and from the army of the foolish and confused who seek your help, thank you.
