Hi there
I have been trying to fix this problem for the last 6 days now, and being a novice in this field, am willing to admit defeat. I have Spybot v1.4 and it is reporting that I have the trojan virtumonde and virtumonde.generic, I guess causing pop ups and a slowing down of my computer. I have also had Symantec antivirus report that it has found the trojan.vundo which they say is also the virtumonde virus so using their removal tools have tried to remove it, but to no avail. Their removal tool did say that it may be hidden in the ieexplorer.exe file but I don't know what to do with that info. It seems to be clear when Spybot fixes it, but as soon as I connect to the internet again, i get the pop ups and virtumonde is found again when I run spybot.
Here is the Kaspersky log:

HI
Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
1. Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
2. When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
3. Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
4. You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click "YES".
5. Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
6. When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click "OK".
7. Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt
If vundofix cannot delete a file, it will try to delete it during a reboot, after the reboot vundofix will open again, you must run vundofix again, from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" ... and you must keep running vundofix until it does delete the file... I've known a stubborn vundo file take 5 or 6 reboots before it is deleted...
Keep running vundofix untill it gives you the message "no infected files were found"
THEN ...
Please download Combofix: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/ComboFix.exe
and save to the desktop.
1. Double click on combo.exe & follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
3. Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
Notes:
* Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.
* Disable script blocking if you have NAV installed so it will not interfere with the fix. Trojan Hunter has been reported to detect combofix as Worm.Qiv.100.
so please post :-
1. C:\vundofix.txt
2. C:\ComboFix.txt
3. a new hijackthis log (run after the other 2 programs)

Hi
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:
NOTE* make sure to only highlight and copy what is inside the code box nothing out side of it.
Also ..
Pay particular attention to this :-
Make sure the word File:: is on the first line of the text file you save (no blank line above it, & no space in front of it)

Save this as "CFScript.txt"
Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScript.gif
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Hi Steam,
Thank you for all your help. :D:
So far no pop ups and computer is running at the speed it should. Do I go ahead now and use it as normal or should I run another Spybot S & D? I must admit I am a little nervous about using it at all...any tips on how to avoid reinfection?
Thanks, Dantegirl :bigthumb:

Hi
Sure ... use it however you want to ... it's nearly as good as the day it came out of the box ...
RE-run any scans you want to, & if they show anything you are concerned about, come back & tell me.
Have a look here :-
So how did I get infected in the first place? for ways to protect yourself by TonyKlein :-

Hi Steam
I re-ran Spybot S & D and it came up with a couple of tracking cookies (Doubleclick & Tradedoubler) and also Virtumonde.Generic (1 entry) in the registry. I "fixed" the problems, but this usually hasn't fixed virtumonde in the past. Any suggestions as to what to do next? or is this just a residual entry which is not going to cause any problems?

Hi
Picking up tracking cookies is a part of everyday surfing nowadays ... installing the MVPS hosts file & IESpyad (both mentioned in TonyKlein's article) will greatly reduce how many you get ... but some will always get through ...
As for the "Virtumonde.Generic (1 entry) in the registry" I expect it may well have just been a leftover ... registry keys without files are no threat ... but if spybot shows it again, then please post the spybot log showing the entry.

Hi Steam
I just ran another Spybot and Yayy! no immediate threats found. I will install the IE-Spyad and MVPS (I assume they can go hand in hand) but will read the tutorial on them first.
Thank you so much for all your help :bigthumb:
I have printed off the "So how did I get infected in the first place" Article and am following the instructions there to hopefully get a super protected computer :)
Thanks once again, I must admit it is great to know someone out there  can look after computer users like me.
Have a great day,
Dantegirl :)

Hi
You're very welcome ... :)
I will install the IE-Spyad and MVPS (I assume they can go hand in hand)
Yes ... no problem ... they both do different things
Happy surfing

Hi Steam
You remember when I said I know enough about computers to be dangerous? Well
In the process of trying to build a super protected computer, I now have some fatal errors coming up, with a possible divorce pending!
The story so far...
I was trying to put the IE-Spyad thing onto my restricted sites zone, but it varies from what I understood of the tutorial, now going by zoned out, or something like that, and when it didn't seem to register the way it should, I did the worst thing I possibly could...:red: I used the system restore to go back to the last restore point which was created after I had changed the CFscript file in Combofix, and then :red::sad::red: (cringe) reran Combofix. Since then I have received fatal error messages each time I restart, and my Symantec Antivirus has gone belly up. (it won't let me reinstall it...)
This probably isn't your area as it is not technically a virus, all scans so far showing clear, but if you could see your way to help me one last time, I have promised my husband and now I will promise you, I am not going to fiddle with the computer settings anymore and if I don't fully understand something, I will not FIDDLE!!!
In the hope you can see your way clear to help me once again, here is the combofix log of my muck up...

Hi Steam
Just a quick note to say System Mechanic seemed to fix my fatal error problem, and I have now been able to reload Symantec. I guess I have been taught a lesson in not dabbling in things I don't understand...No more Fiddling with system things or fixes! :red:
Thank you for your help,
sheepishly yours

HI
IE-Spyad has to be installed using a program called ZonedOut ... that's all ...
I'm including my "foolproof" instructions at the bottom of this post ...
-
Can you use system restore to "undo" the restore you made ?
if you can't, then go back to post #5 in this thread & re-do the CFScript.txt
You have exactly the same malware showing again, so it will remove it again...
-
All Norton products don't like system restore ... you can't reinstall without uninstalling first, & you can't uninstall either because Norton is now corrupted... you have to completely remove Norton before you can reinstall it...
There is a program here which will do this :-
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2004093015165236&nsf=tsgeninfo.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=
Once you've run this you should be able to reinstall Norton...
At this stage I am going to assume that the fatal error messagesare being caused by Norton\Symantec Antivirus
let me know how you get on ...
steam

Installing IE-SPYAD using ZonedOut ...
First go to your root drive & create a new folder....
start > my computer > c:\ ... right click > new > folder > call it IE-SPYAD
1. Download and install ZonedOut from here ...
http://www.funkytoad.com/content/view/15/33/
To do this, click the above link ... then when you get to the ZonedOut page ...
Click the big Z
click save ... then use the drop down list to navigate to > C: > IE-SPYAD (the folder you created)
Click save ... the ZonedOut.zip file is then saved to the C:\IE-SPYAD folder ...
Right click the ZonedOut.zip file & extract here .. or (extract all... & extract to C:\IE-SPYAD)
you will then have ZonedOut folder with the zip file ...
Then to download IE-SPYAD click here :-
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm#IESPYAD_ZO
Scroll down to :-
Download:
IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut
IE-SPYAD_ZO.EXE 309 KB PGP signature
IE-SPYAD_ZO.ZIP 241 KB PGP signature
Download to :- C:\IE-SPYAD
Unpack the files in IE-SPYAD_ZO.ZIP or IE-SPYAD_ZO.EXE to C:\IE-SPYAD\ZonedOut
Now when you open the C:\IE-SPYAD\ZonedOut folder, you should have a total of 8 files & 1 folder (Adult)
If you have a previous version of IE-SPYAD installed - you must uninstall it before installing the new one...
this applies to any one of the "original" IE-SPYAD Restricted sites lists.
In which case read the writing in BLUE ... if you are installing IE-SPYAD for the first time - skip the BLUE writing.
Known Issue (all versions) -If you have by chance "immunized" your computer with Spybot Search and Destroy, and use
ZonedOut to "Remove All" restricted sites - ZonedOut will remove your trusted sites as well. Note that if you remove Spybot
Search and Destroys Immunization the problem goes away...
So ... if you have entries in the trusted sites which you don't want removed & you use Spybot S&D Immunization ... do this
first ... run spybot > click immunize > click undo .. you can re-immunize once you have IE-SPYAD installed ...
