View Full Version : looksky and a paranoid sister

Hi and thanks in advance! My sister has an XP os and a computer custom built for running land survey software. Her internet connection is through AOL dialup. It became infected about a month ago with a bio-hazard desktop and popups mentioning looksky trojan infection, private data at risk, etc. as well as IE redirection to an anti-virus website. She has not had the computer online but twice (not with her consent!) since the infection. She fears she has sensitive personal banking data that could/has been exploited by the bug(s) and does not wish to risk internet connection. The account infected was a non-password protected administrator level account. Unfortunately System Restore is not activated... my fault. I have following a hijackthis log taken from her computer this morning. Her Spybot is months out of date, her McAffe expired over a year, her AdAware has never been updated. I am not certain of the condition of her AVG. A Spybot scan in safe mode found only one entry; "A Better Internet" or something similar. Is there a way to update her Spybot offline? I transferred the hijackthis log to a clean computer via thumb drive, cut and paste to here, and I hope it is in the proper format. Please help! I will check regularly and will gladly post any additional info as fast as I can. Thank you so much!
Christopher

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly :D

Lets keep the machine off-line at the moment, until we see what is there.

The first thing you need to do is start System Restore
Turn ON System Restore

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

An infected restore point is better than nothing if something goes wrong.

Next:-
If McAfee is not updated and you do not intend to pay for it, then you might as well remove it.
All it is doing at the moment is taking up space.

You can transfer this tool and the logs it produces using the USB drive.
Deckard's System Scanner
Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply

Thank You for the swift reply! I turned System Restore back on and the two logs follow as two separate replies:

Hi Kawaisunn,

She fears she has sensitive personal banking data that could/has been exploited by the bug(s) and does not wish to risk internet connection.
So far there is nothing to suggest this, the items in the logs are standard Security Program scams and a couple of search engine trackers.

You didn't remove McAfee, is there a reason for this ?
Now then you have a lot to do here, so I suggest you copy or print this page so you can refer to it.
I would also read all the way through the fix first so you know what to expect.
The longest tasks are at the end, Updating your AVG and Spybot.
These still need doing, because there is no point in me searching for things that they will remove.

SmitFraud Fix
Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe) (by S!Ri)

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

How are things running now ?

Ok, here it is! This puter is certainly running better than it was, however, I am not qualified to say if it is running better than before the infection. AOL Dial-up seems only slightly better than banging one's head on the wall; maybe it is just very slow here anyway. My sister has data & software installed on this box that would be extremely difficult to replace and I have been hounding her to disk image her hard drive as a backup for some time. Had I known her Administrator accounts were not password protected, much less using them to browse the web, I would have had a fit. If you could pass along a link or two on basic essential Windows Best security and data policy it would mean more coming from you, a helpfull stranger, than me, a big brother. If not I will just hound her into doing what is probably best for her in the long run. Thank you again and the three logs requested follow:

Looking good :)

AOL Dial-up seems only slightly better than banging one's head on the wall; maybe it is just very slow here anyway.
Errm -- I have nothing good to say about AOL

If you could pass along a link or two on basic essential Windows Best security and data policy
I will :)

it would mean more coming from you, a helpfull stranger, than me, a big brother.
Yes, sisters are like that  ( I have one myself )

Congratulations your logs look clean :D

Let’s see if I can help you keep it that way

First lets tidy up :D

You can delete SmitFraudFix.exe and DSS.exe along with any logs we have produced

Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check for any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.

Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Now you should disable System restore to purge any infected files and then re-enable it, for help please click HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html)

Reset System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Firewall
You do not appear to have a firewall.
You may be using Windows firewall, however this only stops incoming traffic.
A third party firewall is much safer, as it stops malware that does get on your PC from contacting "home"
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
There are many free ones to choose from if cost is a problem. Visit here (http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/#firewalls) to choose one.

Also PLEASE read this article

So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)

AntiSpyware is also a must
If you look at This Site (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=4959) you will find some recommendations
If you can see a program in the must have section that you have never seen or used then get it!

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.

If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again :D

If you could post back one more time to let me know everything is OK, then I can have this thread archived.

Happy surfing K'
