I recently tried to install spybot S&D on a friends computer. However like many other people i managed to install spywarebot instead. Its a shame that google allow them to be at the top of the search list more or less masquerading as a well known bit of software but i guess im equally as stupid for not really paying attention to what i was doing.
Quickly realising my mistake i uninstalled it and then installed the proper spybot S&D (that i have been using on my own machine for many years). After scanning the machine with spybot S&D it managed to remove many elements of the spywarebot program. However i was wondering is that enough to have cleansed the system of that program?
The only other thing disturbing me about spywarebot is that after using it to scan the machine it came back with lots of problems including a worm and a keystroke tracker. Is it likely that these were false postives trying to induce me into paying for their software? I have scanned the system with both AVG and spybot S&D and they both come back as clean.
I hope this is the right place to ask these questions as i just want to be sure i understand the problem before going through the total hassel of trying to clean it up or reformating the HD. Thanks in adance

Yep Spywarebot is a real nucience, lets check your log and see whats going on.
Download and install Trendmicros Hijackthis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=download)
Download the Trendmicro Hijackthis Installer, follow defauts and it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis and this is exactly where we want it to be.
Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

We need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy as to not interfere with the fix.
Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer
You can fix these with HJT, there not malicious but are not authorized Yahoo sites.
Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

You can run this system cleaner
Download CCleaner from here (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to clean temp files from your computer.
Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

thanks very much for the help. While running the CCcleaner an AVG box popped up alerting me to a virus. I chose the Heal option.
The virus is called "TROJAN horse Generic5.VIN"
AVG and spybot S&D did not pick this up before. Is it likely that there are more of these nasty things lurking in the system somewhere? Is there anyway to check? did cccleaner somehow make it reveal itself. Sorry for all the questions.

CCleaner had nothing to do with it. What I would do is run AVG Anti Virus again and see if its gone. Let me know.
Then run AVG Anti Spyware, post the log and a new HJT log please.
Download AVG Anti-Spyware Free (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-spyware/us/frt/0) to your desktop.
Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware Free, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <-- Dont forget this
Under Reports
Select Automatically generate report after every scan
Uncheck Only if threats were found
Close AVG Anti-Spyware Free <-- Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
This will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
Launch AVG Anti-Spyware Free by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
Next select the Reports icon at the top.
Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system <--Don't forget this
make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important, I need to see that log.
Close AVG Anti-Spyware Free
re-scanned with normal AVG and got no nothing. Followed your instructions with anti spy AVG and got this log: The first time it ran it told me that it found the traces of a virus although it was not specific (hard to tell in safe mode as the program did not fit neatly into the screen). Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:

Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 3 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future
