View Full Version : Winantivirus and Virtumone problems
My computer has been running very slow and I've been getting the pop-up warnings that I need to download winantivirus. I've run spybot several times and I have seen it scan winantivirus 2006 and 2007, but it doesn't seem to recognize them as a problem. It does find virtumone and I say to fix the problem, but it's there the next time I run a scan. I've scanned using avast and it keeps finding the same problems, but I've told it to "remove to chest" and to "delete", but they are still there next time. Also, each time I reboot avast tells me it detects a virus (something like "Win32:lap" I think) and a trojan horse (something like "Win32:Tiny-IF" I think), but they keep coming back. Also, I attempted a System Restore, but in September the only dates it will let me go to are September 24 (the date I started having problems) and 30 (the date I first tried to restore). I can't go bact to months before September. I restored to the 24th, but it didn't do any good. All dates in October are available to restore. Here is the HiJack this log:

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
1. Download combofix from one of these links:

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

Are both avast! and McAfee up-to-date?
Avast should be. I don't pay for McAfee, so I doubt it is. I've kept McAfee on because I heard I should for firewall purposes, but never paid the subscription. I've been doing that for 3-4 years. In the last week or so I've started to be asked to verify my subscription for McAfee. I don't have a subscription so I've always canceled. I don't think I've been asked that before until recently, and if I was it was years ago.

I uninstalled McAfee and downloaded Comodo. Comodo asked me about some programs. I wasn't sure of a couple that said they were Win32 applications (one was something like "svchost.exe"), so I denied them originally. Then I couldn't connect with the internet. Well you should allow access to all programs that need internet access.
Like svchost.exe, winlogon.exe, services.exe.
Practically all those which are in your Running processes and those programs that you know that will need internet access.
If unsure, you can always google program which asks to for access :)
Empty this folder:

I just wasn't sure how to tell which programs asking for internet access were good and which were viruses. I saw "Win32" on some, and while I think that's a legit thing, I'm pretty sure some of my viruses had that in their name. Some of the ones you named were some I wasn't sure what they were. Thanks for letting me know they are O.K. I'll google any others I'm not sure about.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
