Hi,

I'm posting the Hijackthis log of my son's peecee from my Mac, because whenever he attempts to use the internet Windows Explorer shuts down.

He has Symantec Professional installed that detects Trojan.Vundo but is unable to quarantine it. Spybot detects it but is unable to remove it (says it's fixed but running Spybot again detects it again). He keeps these applications up to date. He has also tried VundoFix which also doesn't detect any infected files.

This is the Hijackthis log: thanks for anyt help

Hello Ruadh

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

I need to see a HJT log in normal windows please and I also need you to rename it as the thieves that have written the Vundo Infection have written it to evade a HJT log. I cant even see on your log where you have it installed. Just go to the HJT icon, looks like a man with a Spyglass , right click on it and rename it to Scanner.exe and post a new log please

Thanks for your reply.

I did read the Before you Post instructions, but unfortunately, because of the Windows Explorer crashing thing when trying to use the internet, I can't do the Kaspersky online scanner bit.

I ran Spybot in safe mode and renamed Hijackthis to scanner.exe (although I notice that the log is still named Hijackthis) and ran it in normal mode.

This is the log -

Hello,

Since your having problems staying online I am going to do things a little differently. No need for the Kaspersky log so at this point don't worry about it.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8DAE90D7-03BF-4A05-90AA-C0A9C1DA3FD8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll
O2 - BHO: FLV Helper - {F7F752D7-74AE-7BFC-BE76-7B2297C55076} - C:\WINDOWS\system\bvmtcs32.dll (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winbfi32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winbfi32.dll

Download Pocket Killbox (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Pocket_KillBox_d4709.html) to your desktop.

Highlight all the files with the complete path inside the quote and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.

C:\WINDOWS\system\bvmtcs32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winbfi32.dll

Open Pocket Killbox
Go to File > Paste from clipboard
Set it to Delete on Reboot
Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
Make sure ALL Files is selected
Click on the Red circle with the white X
It will ask you to confirm the deletion...Say yes
It will ask you to reboot, say yes

If you get a message "pending operations has been stopped by external process!" then reboot the computer manually.

I need you to download this tool, you can download it to a disk and transfer it to the bad computer.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

That 020 entry may not go, let see, we may need a special tool to remove it.

Post the Comboxfix log and a New HJT log please

I got as far as doing a System Scan Only. I found the above entries and checked them. I got the warning boxes indicating that they would be removed and clicked okay. No other windows were open.

All of the entries in the window disappeared so I couldn't go onto the next step of opening Pocket Killbox.

I did a new full Hijackthis scan and these are the results - two of the entries are gone, and the ssqrq.dll entry is named differently than before.

Your doing fine :bigthumb: But I am not understanding why you could not run KILLBOX

Remove this again with HJT
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8241C612-448C-44D8-B44F-2682EB432861} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll

Copy the file with the complete path inside the quote box by highlighting it and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll

Open up Vundofix

Click on Scan for Vundo
When done, right click inside the white box and click on Add More Files
Paste in the first box what you just copied.
Close Window
Click on Scan for Vundo.
Close out the tool when done.
Paste the report into this thread.

Post the Vundo log and a New HJT log please

Sorry - I misunderstood (I couldn't copy / paste because I'm working on 2 different computers here)

I went back and did the Scan Only with Highjackthis and fixed the ssqrq.dll entry.

Then I ran Killbox and followed the instructions. When the computer rebooted I ran ComboFix.

These are the ComboFix and Highjackthis logs:

Well I needed you to run that file through the Vundofix but it looks like its gone anyway. :)

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

You may have another infection on this computer, run this tool and give me the report and a new HJT log

Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thank you so much - already the Vundo attacks have stopped and Windows Explorer hasn't crashed since I completed your last set of instructions.

I deleted the files you requested and then ran SDFix. It detected and (I think) removed one more Trojan.

This is the log for SDFix and following it, the new HijackThis log -

Thank you so much - already the Vundo attacks have stopped and Windows Explorer hasn't crashed since I completed your last set of instructions. :bigthumb::bigthumb:

I deleted the files you requested and then ran SDFix. It detected and (I think) removed one more Trojan. Yep, it sure did :bigthumb:

Your log looks fine :bigthumb: You just need to update your Java

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 3 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

You can run this system cleaner that is yours to keep, I run it on my system about once a week. Just do not run the Issues Scan

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to clean temp files from your computer.

Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

How are things running now???

You're brilliant Ken545 - everything seems to be working well now (and faster, I think - especially startup.)

Thank you so much for all of your help!

Your very welcome my friend :)

Malware Complaints (http://malwarecomplaints.info/index.php)
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Win Patrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html) This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give
you the option to deny the change.

IE-Spyad (http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?showtopic=6640)
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads
(cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 2.0 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and
painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Zone Alarm (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7228,00.asp) Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I
wouldn't access the internet without it.

Glad we could help.
