Hello I am at wits end and sure could use a little help.
Been having a problem with my PC over the past few days..
Have run spy bot a few times but it does not seem to fix the problem.
Also ran mcafee with no luck.

The problem is every time I open windows explorer adds and web pages pop up on my desk top.
However if i use AOL it does not happen.

I am new to all this. So if anyone can be of help I would really be grateful.

Charlie

Hello,

Do you mean you get those pop-ups only when you run Internet Explorer as broser?
And you do not get them when using AOL?
Well... Internet Explorer is not a very safe browser.

Though there are pop-ups caused/displayed by malware on users' systems, most pop-ups are implemented by websites and are are not causing any harm. The former pop-ups come up randomly and even with no website visited, the latter pop-ups do only come up when visiting the website that implemented it. As I said, the latter pop-ups do not affect your system and are "just" an annoyance. Thus, I will recommend some (free) pop-up blockers to you:

First thing to mention is, that there are alternatives to Internet Explorer, which should be considered, as - for example - Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/) or Opera (http://www.opera.com).
Both of these are supposed to provide faster, safer and more efficient browsing than other browsers.
What is more: they come with an integrated pop-up blocking function, which means they stop annoying pop-up ads automatically. And, of course, Firefox as well as Opera are freeware.

However, if you want to stay with IE, you can try some other solution. I recommend to have a look at the following page:
http://www.popupcheck.com/pop_up_blocker.asp
There, you will find the results of the Free Pop Up Blockers tests. You'll also notice that Mozilla Firefox covers fifth position.

From my point of view, the Google Toolbar is also recommendable. You can also consider Proxomitron: http://www.proxomitron.info/
or Webwasher http://www.cyberguard.com/products/webwasher/webwasher_products/classic/index.html .
I'll leave the choice to you, they are all ok.
Hope it helps :)

Best regards

Thank you very much for the help.

I thought the problem only happened when using just Internet Explorer, but I was wrong, it happens with AOL also.

I understand that web sites have pop-ups and I do use the pop-up blocker that came with Internet Explorer.
The problem is I am getting them on sites I know don't have any as I have been using them for years without a problem. Even this web site bombs me with pop-ups. It is definitely a random pop-up problem that started last Sunday. Also whatever the problem is it messed with my system restore as I was not able to pick a restore point before Sunday.

I have been running Spybot , MS windows live ,Trend Micro House call and McAfee that AOL offers.
And not one was able to fix my problem.
I got a different results listing form each of the programs The ones I had trouble with were Virtumond and Adware-Isearch as far as I can tell. I used FxVMonde.exe to try and fix Virtumond but it told me I don't have it installed and I have no problems.

Something is definitely wrong with my PC and nothing I try seams to fix it.
Thinking about formatting the dam thing but would rather fix it

I would be very grateful for any help. This problem is driving me nuts for to many hours now.

Yours,
Charles
