View Full Version : Pipas.A infection

BigAl

Like many others, I have the Pipas.A trojan infection and remove it with Spybot, but it keeps coming back. I've also experienced a task in my taskbar called WebSniffer that I have no idea what it's doing. I can close the WebSniffer and it disappears after I remove Pipas.A with Spybot, but it comes back periodically. I've also tried upgrading my version of Java, but always receive a fatal error. I've run Pc-cillin & Spybot, then run HJT. Below is my HJT log. Thanks in advance for your help in removing this.

Hi BigAl,

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

Reboot into safe mode (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406) and delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmzed.exe

Uninstall Java using the Control Panel > Add/Remove Software route before trying to install te latest version.
Upgrading is not the best way in this case.

Boot back to normal and post a new HijackThis log.

Thanks Metallica,

I did the steps you advised, but the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmzed.exe was not there to delete. It appeared to me that the file name had changed to C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmbls.exe and I deleted that one. I had read that the file name was random. Also, I saw no indication that I should reperform the virus scans prior to following your procedures, so I did not.

I have not uninstalled Java yet, since I was in Safe Mode. I assume I can do that later. I see the Registry entry is still present that contains the \ruins extension. I assume a Spybot scan will take care of this and I'll be good to go, but I'll wait for further instructions from you. Below is my latest HJT log.

Thanks for all your help.

You did great. :bigthumb:

But I missed this one earlier:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{C52AE61B-A7E6-4127-9B19-C06CEBB0361C}: NameServer = 85.255.116.58,85.255.112.233

Fix that using HijackThis and continue with the un- and re-installing of Java.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for all your help Metallica. I've completed the steps you gave me, ran Pc-cillin and Spybot, rebooted, repeated. I believe I'm clean. However, the Websniffer has reappeared in my taskbar. Is this a concern and do you know what it does? I'm showing my latest log. Thanks again, Al

Your log is clean.

Can you find out which program or software this WebSniffer belongs to, by rightclicking it in the taskbar?

I know McAfee uses that name for one of its components, but I don't think you have that installed.

BigAl

It comes and goes; can't currently see it; but when it's there, right-clicking on it only brings up options to minimize, maximize, close. Can't see properties, but I think the full name of it was "mysoftware websniffer.exe". I do have software on my computer called mysoftware - it's merely an address label software.

Thanks for all your help.

Al

Copy the code below into notepad and save it as lookup.bat
Set Filetype to "All files"

dir %Systemdrive%\WebSniffer.* /a h /s > files.txt
start notepad files.txt

Start the file by doubleclicking lookup.bat
That will open a file called files.txt. Post the content of that file.

Metallica,
Below is the contents of the notepad after running the lookup.bat you gave me.

Thanks again,
Al

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 389F-4E2E

That isn't much. :)

Let's look in the registry.

Download the Registry Search Tool (http://billsway.com/vbspage/vbsfiles/regsrch.zip).
Unzip the contents of RegSrch.zip to a convenient location.
Double-click on RegSrch.vbs.
If you have an anti-virus installed it might prompt you about a running script. Please ignore this warning and allow the script to run.
In the "Enter search string (case insensitive) and click OK..." box paste this string:
WebSniffer

Click "OK" to search the registry for that string.
Wait for a few minutes while it completes the search.
Click "OK" to open the results in WordPad.
Copy and paste the entire results into your next post.

Here's the results of the registry scan for Websniffer:

REGEDIT4
; RegSrch.vbs © Bill James

; Registry search results for string "Websniffer" 1/21/2006 11:02:08 PM

; NOTE: This file will be deleted when you close WordPad.
; You must manually save this file to a new location if you want to refer to it again later.
; (If you save the file with a .reg extension, you can use it to restore any Registry changes you make to these values.)

Looks like we are getting somewhere. ;)

Can you surf to:
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=5.0
Follow the instructions there to upload:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\MySoftware\intercom.exe
so I can have a look at that one.

It gets started from here:
O4 - Global Startup: MySoftware InterCom.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\MySoftware\intercom.exe

So you can fix that line for the time being, unless you know what is is now.

Metallica(love the name, by the way),
I uploaded the file. Subject is mysoftware websniffer, under started by BigAl.

I don't know whether it worked or not. There was no output in the text window, and I couldn't see where anything is attached. I followed the procedures correctly.

Thanks,
Al

Metallica

It did work. The file looks to be designed to do exactly what it's name indicates.

I think the output goes to a files called:
Appcfg.snf

Can you see if you can find a file with that name.

Better take a peek if it doesn't contain any private information before you upload that as well.

BigAl

Metallica,

There is no file on my computer with that filename or extension. The websniffer has not reappeared in the last several reboots.

Thanks,
Al
