:oops:my curiosity finally got the better of me, and downloaded limewire. i only downloaded 1 file, but guess what, it loaded "adssite" onto my computer. there are no items in add/remove programs that look suspicious, i've scannes a number of times with ZoneAlarm 7.0.337.000, SpyBot S&D 1.4, Ad-Aware 2007 and Windows Malicious Software Removal to no avail. I've followed all the procedures in "Before You Post," and here are my HJT and Kapersky logs:

you have 3 antimalware apps and have done a online scan, and have a firewall to boot. what are you calling adssite? are you getting poups, page redirections?
do you remember where you got limewire from? the webpage? there are many many scam domains with look alike names and clones out there.

Sorry for not being specific. I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.7, I have the "block pop-up windows" box checked, I get a pop-up with the Firefox logo and something like "Ads served by Adssite" in the title bar, but no menus or address bar. I downloaded Limewire from limewire.com. I don't get a lot of pop-ups, but my computer has been much slower since this happened.

ok thanks for the info. looks like we have something to start with anyway. i know you already looked but check again in the add/remove programs panel for anything that your not sure about or how it got there.

if you would, do this:
go here:

and download:
Suspicious File Packer
extract the downloaded file to your desktop.
start suspicious file packer.
under step 1 copy paste this:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\adssite-remove.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rightonadz-uninst.exe

click the continue button. it will create a cab/zip archive on your desktop. please e-mail me as a attachment the archive. to:
echoreply(at)hotmail(dot)com

to show all files:
FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

navigate to the system32 dir. and see if you can locate these two .exe:

adssite-remove.exe
rightonadz-uninst.exe

pretty sure those are the culprits. to get them checked out you can upload them to either of these two websites. at the web site, browse for the file on your computer again and click the send or submit button.
if they get flagged as malware try deleting the .exe from your computer.

Thanks again for your help. I sent the file you asked for, and I scanned those 2 files at jotti and virusscan. jotti found nothing, but in Virusscan, Rising tagged both with "Trojan.DL.Win32.Zlob.dbi" and Prevxl tagged rightonadz-uninst.exe with "Heuristic: Suspicious File With Bad Child Associations." I checked my add/remove program list again, and there is now a program called "Browser Optimizer Adssite." When I click Change/Remove, I get a pop-up box with "Uninstall Validation" in the title bar, and a box with a randomly generated code it wants me to type in and click the uninstall button. I didn't do it, so it is still in the list.

ok thanks. go ahead and run the uninstaller from the add/remove programs panel using the "code" afterwards reboot computer. rescan and post a new hjt log please.
