Hi,

I'm desperate to get rid of this bug. It appears to be fixed after every spybot run , but reappears after a restart of the machine. Ive used AVG, Spybot, Spyware Doctor, combofix, Vundofix, and Adaware to no avail. I understand it embeds in the resident memory, so how do I get rid of it? I've run a scan online and a HJT scan. The logs appear below. It got thru Norton Internet Security so I unistalled it and put AVG in its place with a default windows firewall.

Hello coastalman

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

Please reply to this thread only by using the Post Reply button and not start a New Topic or your posts will be all over the forum and we won't be able to keep track of you.

Drag combofix, Vundofix to the trash as we are going to have to start from square one, download them new as they are updated all the time. Your better off posting to a forum like this for help before you try to remove this garbage yourself because a botched attempt could disable
your system and it could also remove the tell tale signs of what your infected with.

Run them in this order.

Download VundoFix (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4 ) to your desktop

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

This is important , so this before you post a new log
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe<-- Right click on Hijackthis.exe ( looks like a man with a spyglass ) and rename it to Scanner.exe

Let me see the Vundofix log, the Combofix log and a new HJT log renamed please

Hi Ken545,

Vundofix found nothing. I've attached the logs for all 3 using the new .exe for each like u asked. I changed HJT to Scanner before running the scan.

The Vundo log is from my 1st run of Vundofix. I did not find any other log for Vundo as it said it did not find any infected files. My Kaspersky log says I have 29 viruses and 100 infections, however I believe some of those infections might be part of the Norton Internet Security quarantine folder, which I believe is still on my system even after uninstalling NIS.:red::oops:

Hello coastalman,

If you look at the beginning of the Vundo log you will see it removed some files.

We need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy as to not interfere with the fix.
Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\jkkhhfc]

Copy the entire contents inside the Quote box and Paste it into Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad ) name the file Regfix.reg and in the drop down box, save it as All Files. Save it to your desktop. Then Rightclick on the Regfix.reg file and click on Merge, when it asks you to merge with the Registry, say yes.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

I am almost 100% sure these files are bad but always like to err on the cautious side, so look for these files and delete them, you may have to boot to Safemode if they wont let you remove them in normal windows. Keep them in the Recycle Bin for a day or two to make sure everything works that is supposed to. Let me know which one if any would not delete.

C:\WINNT\system32\tmp.reg <-- This one is definetly bad.
C:\WINNT\system32\cwpujxyy.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\hreksxqo.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\mknxkqex.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\kwjnnsgp.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\stvkllkt.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\wikdqban.exe

If you need this.

To Enter Safemode

Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Hi Ken545,

I did as you asked and it allowed me to delete all the files you listed without a problem. I also saw that the dll files you asked me to delete also had .dllbox files that were in the Winnt\sys32 folder. Do I delete them or should I leave them alone? Here's the HJT log after all the above was done.

While I was doing all the above I decided to check my laptop and ran spybot, spyware etc on it and it did not find any bugs that couldn't be killed. The laptop was not slow and did not have popups or anything, but I was becoming paranoid so I did the scans. I'm doing an online Kaspersky scan and it shows that there were 2 viruses found and 4 infections. While the scan is not done I'm wondering if you might help me with the laptop as well. I promise to follow the suggestions for safe surfing in the beginning of the forum after this. Thanks in advance.

Hi Ken545,

I guess that fix did not work. I just rebooted the machine and spybot ran a scan after startup and now I have 2 entries instead of one in the BHO and User settings categories. What did I do wrong or not do? I'm hoping you can solve this as I'm getting really desperate.
Thanks

Good Morning,

You may not have done that reg fix properly, no biggie.

Remove these with HJT.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BACEB7AF-8D88-456E-82D0-7BEB9A4410FE} - (no file)

Go ahead and delete those dllbox files also.

C:\WINNT\caxchg.exe <-- I asked you about the card reader, I need to know because if you dont have one then this may be a virus????????

Make sure you have Spybot Search and Destroy version 1.5, go to Help>about and find out, if not download the latest version and set it up this way. Always update it and run a full scan removing it all. Reboot and run it again, Spybot does a good job of removing the registry entries associated with your infection.

Download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.1 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html)
If you have the older version 1.4, remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
Then to Updates Search for Updates
If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
Let it scan your system
Then to Fix Problems and fix all it finds.
Reboot your computer.

I would be more than happy to help you with your laptop but lets get this one finished first or it can get confusing. When were done here you can post the HJT log for your laptop, rename HJT to scanner.exe also

Ken :)

Hi Ken

I have a built in card reader, not an external USB card reader. So I went into the WINNT folder and found the caxchg.exe file and tried to delete it but it says access denied which tells me its definitely a bug. Also the fact that it was created on 10/14/07 the day I noticed all those popups and knew I had a bug/bugs. Iam now looking thru all the WINNT folder for anything that was created on 10/14/07 with a time stamp of 11:57am and deleting them. I will not empty the recycle bin until I'm sure everything works fine. I also dumped the spybot1.4 and installed 1.5 following your instructions to a T. It is now running a scan and I will keep you posted on the results in a while. I believe I may have to start in safe mode to get rid of the caxchg.exe file from the WINNT folder. Let me know what to do if this is wrong. Thanks

Ken545,

The spybot scan came back clean after using the 1.5 version. Do you still want me to clean those BHO files using HJTor should I leave them alone? I'll wait to hear back. Also I prefer Firefox to IE; Is this something I should consider while surfing? My wife was using IE(her preference) the day we got hit. If Firefox needs any tweaks for the spyware apps I'd like to know. Thanks.

Yep, remove those BHOs , they are just left overs related to Vundo,

Be careful with that caxchg.exe file , it may be related to your card reader because you have another one for the reader also. Why don't you right click on that file and go to properties and see what information you can come up with as far as who owns the files. Because a file won't delete does not make it a virus. Dont delete anymore files if you dont know what they are.

I prefer Firefox over IE myself, been using it for about 3 years or so.

Let me know what you find out about that file, you can also upload it here for analysis.

Go to this site Jotti Upload (http://virusscan.jotti.org/) and under the browse feature, browse to these files

C:\WINNT\caxchg.exe

Then click on upload and it will give you a report, post the report in your next reply.

How are things running now?

Hi Ken,

I did a jotti scan like you asked and the scanner found nothing on caxchg.exe. All the scans for AVG and Spybot are coming thru clean so I'm assuming that the computer is clean. Thanks for everything you helped with. I'm attaching the HJT log for my laptop in my next post. I hope thats okay and that we are done with this computer.:):D:

I also read the "how did I......" and removed an extremely old Java(1.2) out and installed the JRE6 update3 on the machine we just cured. I have a JRE5 on my laptop that won't uninstall for some reason even in safe mode. The HJT log for the laptop is:

The log for your laptop looks fine :bigthumb:

C:\Program Files\Macrogaming\SweetIM <--This is your call to remove , it looks like it kind of falls in the gray area.

Do you know this to be safe?

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 2 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

It looks like everything is under control :bigthumb: I am sure the files we were concerned about are related to your card reader.

Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads
(cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 2.0 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and
painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Zone Alarm (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7228,00.asp) Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I
wouldn't access the internet without it.

Hi Ken,

The 10.0.0.15 is okay. It is from software we installed for the webcam we are going to install. I seem to be having prblems uninstalling any program. Apparently the passport drive(Western Digital) I got in August installed a sync program which appears to be malfunctioning and now whenever I try to uninstall any program It says
Error 1324! The path WD sync Data contains an invalid character. Fatal error during installation. Do you have any suggestions for this? Thanks
Already installed the latest Java but can't get rid of the older version due to the same error message. Same for the WD sync program. HELP!

It won't hurt not uninstalling the older Java as long as you install the new one.

Have you tried running the chkdisk utility, dont know if it will help at all, you can try it.

Click on My Computer
Right click on your C: drive and then click on Properties
Open the Tools Tab
Click on Error Checking
Check both boxes to fix
Click ok, it ,may reboot your computer and run the scan.

If a lot of errors are found, I mean alot it could point to problems with your hard drive and I would contact the manufacturer and let them help you with it.

Ken,

You don't know how much all of this helps. I am very grateful to you for all your help with my problem. I do believe my computer is clean and I've installed zonealarm as my firewall and AVG as my anti-virus, not to mention all the others (spyware blaster, spyguard etc). I've also gone ahead and taken the advice of the 23 things to make your computer faster. Again, thank you and hope I don't have to come back for any more problems. However I know this for a fact that if I have to I can rely on your guys' expertise to help me thru.:bigthumb::):D:
